My trip is winding down. I'll be leaving Canada on Monday, the fifth. I honestly hate to leave this place. I've grown to really love Canada and the people I've met here.

I want to say something here about the Mudcatter who has been my host during my visit in Canada. flattop has been the most excellent host anyone could hope for. He has made every effort to ensure my comfort while I've been his guest. And he has gone to heroic lengths to make sure I had as many opportunities as possible to get out, hear good music, and meet Mudcatters and other good people.

All this despite a grueling work load, and numerous other pressures that he finds himself having to deal with right now.

I'm forever in your debt, flattop.

Carol

It was dark by the time I was finished with the border crossing. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to see the part of Canada I was traveling through. The first thing I saw was a great big Tim Horton's billboard. I started counting firsts... first Canadian beer store (called "The Beer Store"), first Canadian dairy store (called "The Milk Store"). I think the U.S. could learn a lot from Canada about being succinct and to the point.

On the way to Orillia from the train station, we stopped at a Tim Horton's. It was not a proper Tim Horton's. I guess it was a sort of bastard Tim Horton's. I had a croissant, and flattop had something that looked like a scone. He called it something else, but I don't remember what.

Orillia has many great sights to see. We checked most of them out at about 2:00 in the morning. flattop said I could probably get a dancing gig at the Atherley Arms while I was in town. We saw maybe four out of the six or eight Tim Horton's in town. Rhombo's was a sight to behold. The McGill man was very friendly. We spent fifteen minutes or so waving back and forth to each other, he and I. He didn't say much. Strong silent type, I guess...

Attention, Mudcat Cafe:

This is a communique from planet Orillia. Mudcatters flattop, hesperis, Little Hawk and CarolC met tonight at a local eatery called Brewery Bay Food Company, for a farewell meal....as CarolC is about to return to Bushville, USA. Downtown Orillia was as urbane, cosmopolitan, and sophisticated as it usually is. 'Nuff said about that.

We pause for a brief comment from our sponsor...

HEY THERE!!! HAVE YOU CONSIDERED NOSE IMPLANTS? IF YOU HAVEN'T, YOU SHOULD, BECAUSE ALL THE POPULAR PEOPLE IN MY TOWN HAVE NOSE IMPLANTS! EVEN MY DAD HAS THEM! TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR NOSE IMPLANTS, DAD! YES, FOLKS, THEY TOLD ME I WAS TOO OLD FOR NOSE IMPLANTS, BUT THAT DIDN'T STOP ME! I FEEL AS YOUNG AS MY SON NOW, AND I OWE IT ALL TO NOSE IMPLANTS. THAT'S RIGHT, DAD! NOW DON'T WASTE TIME, GET OUT THERE AND GET YOUR NOSE IMPLANTS NOW!!!!

Okay, we're back. The food was good, the talk was also. We Orillians will certainly regret Carol's departure. She has been a valuable addition to the Orillia scene, in fact...

AND NOW ANOTHER WORD FROM...ZIPPY BURGERS!!! YES, THE ONLY BURGER THAT HAS 15% LESS ANIMAL FAT AND WON'T CAUSE YOUR GUINEA PIG TO "HALVE A COW"...BLAH, BLAH, BLAH....

Shit. We're back. I think. I advise all you people out there in yahoo-land to NEVER eat a f**king zippy burger, because they-

AND NOW, A WORD FROM YOUR FRENDLY CHEMICAL COMPANY! YES, "FRENDLY", THE NAME THAT STANDS FOR GOOD TOXINS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD! FRENDLY, THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU LUST CANAL, AND SMILED WHILE THEY WERE DOING IT!!! KEEP AMERICA STRONG! BUY FRENDLY TOXINS!!! WE HAVE BEEN...

BANG! POW! BLAM! Aaaaaargggggh!

Okay, we just shot the corporate sponsors. All of them. This is Canada, eh? And we've had enough of your capitalist bullshit. This is now a government-funded radio station. Got that, MAV? Socialism, pal. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Since CarolC is about to leave beautiful downtown Orillia, "the town that never wakes", we felt that we should all post a brief farewell remark or two, starting with me...

LH - Carol, it has been great meeting you, and I can hardly wait to see Shepherdstown. Bon voyage!

Okay, farttop, it's your turn...

Why do I always feel like the butt of the jokes?

- flattop

Possibly because you are a joke, flattop. Or at least a butt. Especially after dinner today.
Well, this trip of Carol's has certainly been an edifying one for me, too. I never knew males could be lesbians until flattop admitted to being a lesbian. Puzzling. I also never knew just how many McGill porta potties there are in Orillia. Wow! What a stink there's going to be about that!
My hamsters were very pleased to meet you Carol, and so was I. We'll have to come visit you now, eh?

~ hesperis

Thanks, comrades! Already got the nose implants... (ahem)

**Sob** (I don't wanna go... !!!!!!!!) I'm going to have to request political asylum so they'll let me stay in Canada.

Thanks for showing me such a great time everybody!

(If I kidnap hesperis' hamsters, I wonder if they'll stop me at the border?) Just kidding, hesperis. They're the nicest, most beautiful hamsters I've ever seen. And they have amazingly soft and silky fur, too. flattop's not a butt, either. I haven't quite figured out what he is yet, though.

Carol

He's not a lesbian either. Gahhhh...I feel ill just thinking about it!

This is LH signing off.

hesperis' hamster is a hoser! The hamster flunked the maze test. CarolC and I watched for a dull hour or two while the hamster kept going crawling back to the starting cube of the maze even though hesperis coaxed it with dried fruit, interesting facial expressions, and cute little noises. Carol and I began drifting off into dream sleep. We decided that watching Little Hawk type could be more exciting so we went out into the other room where the Hawk was hunched over the keyboard spewing superfluous words. He was more exciting than a hamster. Life in Orillia is too much fun! Hessy immediately claims that the hamster figured out the maze and escape. What a wiz! I think hesperis opened the lid and jerked out the stupid little furry thing.

I hope to see lots of Mudcatters at the concert. My next post to this thread will probably be from Shepherdstown in a couple of days. See you then!

By the way, lest anyone should take my remarks above as being pejorative toward lesbians, that was not my intention. It's just that the concept of flattop as a lesbian makes me queasy. The very notion is unnatural in the extreme, and it is an insult to all lesbians everywhere.

As for the hamster, I suspect that it did not emerge from the box while flattop was in the room, because it had correctly ascertained that he is a troublemaker, and it decided not to give him the satisfaction. Animals are extremely alert about this sort of thing. I have seen dogs cross the street to avoid a close encounter with flattop. (Hee! Hee!)

So she's had her fillia Orillia, and headed back to the Cultural Hub of the Universe. LH, you'll be welcome as long as you bring this lesibian with a flattop. Carol's neighbor, who recently moved out, ran with a local dyke bunch called the Tin Lezzies. The only problem was when she had a sex party. We live in a small apartment complex, and these multiple orgasm types can really crowd up a parking lot. Also Carol's stove vent shared an outlet with this gals bathroom vent. When I would go over to Carol's apartment, I could swear her refrigerator was screaming "Eat Me" every time I passed it...

Carol just got in... her train was about 40 minutes late. She's home where, yes, I did put some green stuff in her fridge. (I have green stuff in my fridge, but it used to have a face and a mother...). She's tired but still has to work off the post-travel staggers. She should message the Orillia folks, once she nests in.

As for Patton, my favorite general was probably Chesty Puller or Brute Krulack, both USMC. Chesty's most quoted phrase was at the Frozen Chosen in Korea, when he said "the (enemy) has us completely surrounded... those bastards won't get away this time...

The Shepherdstown folks understand me well enough. My apartment ad read "Lovely apartment in center of town, good defensive position with excellent fields of fire". During the ridiculous run-up to Y2K, others in the town were setting up committees to feed the poor and maintain services. I just called "Dibs" on the good looking women...

Belive it or not his son was the past Commandant of the Marine Corps. Other than the Chosen break-out, he was noted for the assualt of the 5th Marines over the seawall at Inchon, where his orders were to "Shoot'em 'till the quivering stops". And both he and Chesty weren't big as a full tick.

The Civil War is far from over. It gets re-enacted in grand style every 4 years, with a secondary re-enactment at 2 year intervals for Congressional elections.

The issues have changed somewhat, but the conflict is as nasty and unforgiving as ever.

It rages daily on Mudcat too, on such glorious threads as "bushwhacked" and "conservative cavalry".

A souse divided against himself cannot stand.

It will only end when the cones take over, I'm afraid.

Last time we went to the Newmarket Coffeehouse, flattop and I had a comptetition to see who would get hit on the most. We assigned point values to different kinds of people. I would get 5 points if the owner of the place hit on me, and 50 points if a Scotsman hit on me. Everyone else would be 1 point. flattop would get 50 points if a (female) professional skater hit on him, and one point for everyone else.

flattop got hit on by two women at the gas station. He claims they were young women, but I didn't see them. So he started off two points ahead of me. By the end of the night, I was ahead, six to two.

I got my fifty points a week ago Monday. "Johnny Death", a Scotsman who goes to the Orillia song circle hit on me in the Tim Horton's where we gathered after song circle was over. That was after I asked him what he thought of the anus as a w/hole. flattop said I shouldn't be gentle with Johnny. I didn't realize at the time that flattop was trying to set me up with him.

Hi hesperis. I've written two that I know of. I wrote the song about meeting Allan C and his friend David C at the Waffle House in Winchester Virginia ("CarolC writes a song" thread), sung to the tune of "Found a Peanut".

The other one, I'd probably better not tell you about. Lets just say I wrote it to get someone off my back about writing songs. Hasn't pestered me since.

Hi black walnut,

Thanks for posting to my diary thread. I appreciate when people do that. I like to answer on this thread.

I'm sorry we didn't get to come down for a Toronto Song Circle, too. The weather was a bugger, wasn't it. There were also a lot of scheduling problems because of flattop's heavy work load, my low energy level, and so many choices of wonderful things to do.

I would love to visit your part of the world again some day, and I would most definitely love to hook up with more of those of you in the Toronto area. ( ...and see what it looks like up there when it's warm and green.)

Take care,

Carol,

You should've seen Toronto in the 60's and early 70's. What a paradise it was! It's a much bigger, dirtier, harder, colder city now. Times have changed. I wish I could be back there in 1967 and have the chance to do it all over again, cos there was so much happening that I could have been a part of and wasn't. The coffeehouse scene was just amazing then. And all my heroes were playing in them too, 'cept for Dylan. He'd gotten too famous for the coffeehouse circuit by that time, and he wasn't seen much until re-emerging in 1974 with The Band, and playing Maple Leaf Gardens (the huge hockey arena in downtown Toronto). The Gardens recently closed its doors for the last time, by the way. The coffeehouses are long gone...

Don't listen to him Carol. Apart from the 2 square blocks around Yorkville and some honky-tonk taverns, Toronto was a miserable boring city in 1967. You couldn't find a decent restaurant in the city, it closed down at 9:30, and it was saturated in narrow-minded prejudice. It got better beginning in about 1967, and got better and better into the 80s and has only gone into decline in the last 4 years or so when the neglect of transit, bad-land use planning, and the antagonism of the government has begun to destroy it. Of course, in the perspective of the gods, the golden age of Toronto was probably the day you were there.

yours, Peter T.

I'm with Peter T on this one. The Toronto that I grew up in was very clean, safe and boring. It certainly has developed some big city problems an I now live about 40 minutes east in a clean safe and boring town, but I'm always amazed at just how much it has to offer now. It has really become a world class city with lots in the way of great music, wonderful restaurants, world class theatre and big league sports. I wouldn't feel as safe walking at Yonge and Dundas at closing time as I did in the seventies and eighties, but it still feels a lot safer than some of the big (and not so big) U.S. cities that I've been to.

There was this strange little room on a second floor behind a Scandinavian restaurant, called The Bohemian Embassy. The significance of it's name was lost on me the first few times I visited it, but I absolutely LOVED the people who inhabited it. Old poets, folksingers, dissolute novelists, drunks, ladies with long hair and black leotards, dopers....in short, the kind of people that I had hoped existed, but wasn't sure. One night, the crusty blues singer and picker Dave Van Ronk shuffled onto the stage, accompanied by a very inebriated young harp player.

Next time I saw the young kid, it was in a 1500 seat hall. (still looked pretty blitzed though)

Another little place that I dearly loved was called "Gastons's". It was at the corner of Avenue Rd. and Davenport, and was open most of the night. It catered to "old beats" (who bemoaned that Kerouak had gone "commercial"), young French 'revolutionaries' and failing art students (like me). One night,('bout two in the morning) Gaston Schwalb, the owner, asked me to get out the guitar and accompany a friend of his. She was very pretty and seemed verrry french. She didn't sing "Downtown", but her name was Petula Clark. Actually I'm trying to remember what she DID sing....might have been a Jacques Brel song or two.

Wow. I love these discriptions of Toronto as it was and as it is. I really enjoyed the little bit of time I spent there. Partly because I was seeing it with new eyes, maybe. But it is a very interesting city. I like the subways a lot as well. It's fun to watch people in subways, and I think it's possible to learn a lot about a city by watching the people there.

(thanks Peter T.)

Hey, guys, interesting perspectives on the old Toronto!

It probably was kinda boring and provincial, all right, but very clean.

I just wish I'd taken more advantage of the folk scene back then than I did.

Gaston's! Now that was a hot date place to go.
The one thing that Toronto has lost, and I am not sure when it lost it, was its small town feel (the good part, not the bad). I think the last gasps of it were the city's responses to some terrible crimes in the 80s -- like when Alison Parrott was abducted -- and somehow it sort of went away after that. The city went over some size/shape mark, diffusing the population too much -- so now things happen in different parts of the city and no one really cares too much. As far as I can tell.

yours, Peter T.
