I've grown to really love Canada and the people I've met here. I want to say something here about the Mudcatter who has been my host during my visit in Canada. flattop has been the most excellent host anyone could hope for. He has made every effort to ensure my comfort while I've been his guest. And he has gone to heroic lengths to make sure I had as many opportunities as possible to get out, hear good music, and meet Mudcatters and other good people. All this despite a grueling work load, and numerous other pressures that he finds himself having to deal with right now. I'm forever in your debt, flattop. Carol |

It was dark by the time I was finished with the border crossing. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to see the part of Canada I was traveling through. The first thing I saw was a great big Tim Horton's billboard. I started counting firsts... first Canadian beer store (called "The Beer Store"), first Canadian dairy store (called "The Milk Store"). I think the U.S. could learn a lot from Canada about being succinct and to the point. |

Carol and I began drifting off into dream sleep. We decided that watching Little Hawk type could be more exciting so we went out into the other room where the Hawk was hunched over the keyboard spewing superfluous words. He was more exciting than a hamster. Life in Orillia is too much fun! Hessy immediately claims that the hamster figured out the maze and escape. What a wiz! I think hesperis opened the lid and jerked out the stupid little furry thing. |

Last time we went to the Newmarket Coffeehouse, flattop and I had a comptetition to see who would get hit on the most. We assigned point values to different kinds of people. I would get 5 points if the owner of the place hit on me, and 50 points if a Scotsman hit on me. Everyone else would be 1 point. flattop would get 50 points if a (female) professional skater hit on him, and one point for everyone else.
flattop got hit on by two women at the gas station. He claims they were young women, but I didn't see them. So he started off two points ahead of me. By the end of the night, I was ahead, six to two. I got my fifty points a week ago Monday. "Johnny Death", a Scotsman who goes to the Orillia song circle hit on me in the Tim Horton's where we gathered after song circle was over. That was after I asked him what he thought of the anus as a w/hole. flattop said I shouldn't be gentle with Johnny. I didn't realize at the time that flattop was trying to set me up with him. |

How many songs have you written, Carol? Hi hesperis. I've written two that I know of. I wrote the song about meeting Allan C and his friend David C at the Waffle House in Winchester Virginia ("CarolC writes a song" thread), sung to the tune of "Found a Peanut". The other one, I'd probably better not tell you about. Lets just say I wrote it to get someone off my back about writing songs. Hasn't pestered me since.

I'm sorry we didn't get to come down for a Toronto Song Circle, too. The weather was a bugger, wasn't it. There were also a lot of scheduling problems because of flattop's heavy work load, my low energy level, and so many choices of wonderful things to do.
I would love to visit your part of the world again some day, and I would most definitely love to hook up with more of those of you in the Toronto area. ( ...and see what it looks like up there when it's warm and green.) Take care, Carol |

It's a much bigger, dirtier, harder, colder city now. Times have changed. I wish I could be back there in 1967 and have the chance to do it all over again, cos there was so much happening that I could have been a part of and wasn't. The coffeehouse scene was just amazing then. And all my heroes were playing in them too, 'cept for Dylan. He'd gotten too famous for the coffeehouse circuit by that time, and he wasn't seen much until re-emerging in 1974 with The Band, and playing Maple Leaf Gardens (the huge hockey arena in downtown Toronto). The Gardens recently closed its doors for the last time, by the way. The coffeehouses are long gone... - LH |

Apart from the 2 square blocks around Yorkville and some honky-tonk taverns, Toronto was a miserable boring city in 1967. You couldn't find a decent restaurant in the city, it closed down at 9:30, and it was saturated in narrow-minded prejudice. It got better beginning in about 1967, and got better and better into the 80s and has only gone into decline in the last 4 years or so when the neglect of transit, bad-land use planning, and the antagonism of the government has begun to destroy it. It certainly has developed some big city problems an I now live about 40 minutes east in a clean safe and boring town, but I'm always amazed at just how much it has to offer now. It has really become a world class city with lots in the way of great music, wonderful restaurants, world class theatre and big league sports. I wouldn't feel as safe walking at Yonge and Dundas at closing time as I did in the seventies and eighties, but it still feels a lot safer than some of the big (and not so big) U.S. cities that I've been to.

The significance of it's name was lost on me the first few times I visited it, but I absolutely LOVED the people who inhabited it. Old poets, folksingers, dissolute novelists, drunks, ladies with long hair and black leotards, dopers....in short, the kind of people that I had hoped existed, but wasn't sure. One night, the crusty blues singer and picker Dave Van Ronk shuffled onto the stage, accompanied by a very inebriated young harp player. Next time I saw the young kid, it was in a 1500 seat hall. (still looked pretty blitzed though) Another little place that I dearly loved was called "Gastons's". It was at the corner of Avenue Rd. and Davenport, and was open most of the night. It catered to "old beats" (who bemoaned that Kerouak had gone "commercial"), young French 'revolutionaries' and failing art students (like me). One night,('bout two in the morning) Gaston Schwalb, the owner, asked me to get out the guitar and accompany a friend of his. She was very pretty and seemed verrry french. She didn't sing "Downtown", but her name was Petula Clark. Actually I'm trying to remember what she DID sing....might have been a Jacques Brel song or two. Rick |

I really enjoyed the little bit of time I spent there. Partly because I was seeing it with new eyes, maybe. But it is a very interesting city. I like the subways a lot as well. It's fun to watch people in subways, and I think it's possible to learn a lot about a city by watching the people there.

The one thing that Toronto has lost, and I am not sure when it lost it, was its small town feel (the good part, not the bad). I think the last gasps of it were the city's responses to some terrible crimes in the 80s -- like when Alison Parrott was abducted -- and somehow it sort of went away after that. The city went over some size/shape mark, diffusing the population too much -- so now things happen in different parts of the city and no one really cares too much.
