"Feathers Fly Amid Court 'Fowl-Up'

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Reuters) - Two gamecocks escaped in a Trinidad courtroom and began battling each other with feathers flying, sending the rest of the evidence into a cackling frenzy during a hearing into illegal cockfights.

Feathers scattered in all directions as the gamecocks became entangled in their fight while more than a dozen fowl, being held in boxes, crowed, cackled and squawked at the Princes Town Magistrate court on Wednesday, the Caribbean News Agency said.

Twenty-three boxes of birds were brought into the court as evidence in the trial of 93 men and two women accused of illegal betting on cockfights. As the case was about to proceed, two of the gamecocks broke out from their boxes and put on a violent display for the court before making a dash for freedom.

Two policemen ran after the cocks and captured them.

Amid the noise and a strong, foul scent in the court, Magistrate Alicia Gafoor -- sometimes holding her nose -- proceeded with the case. It was adjourned without a verdict."
