Subject: Meaning of the term 'Jody Boy'? From: Tom D. Date: 04 Mar 01 - 12:35 AM In the first verse of the really fine tune "Sailing to Philadelphia" (sung by Mark Knopfler and James Taylor on Mr. Knopfler's equally fine CD of the same name), Jeremiah Dixon (of Mason/Dixon fame) describes himself as a "Jody Boy." I came up empty on a quick check for the word in the dictionaries available to me. In hopes that the term is not a religious or ethnic slur of some sort, could anyone enlighten me as to its origin, derivation and/or meaning? The only other usage of the word "Jody" that I recall is, I believe, the Bruce Dern character's apparently perjorative use of it to decscribe the anti-war Jon Voight character in the film "Coming Home." Thanks, Tom D. |
Subject: RE: Help: Meaning of the term 'Jody Boy'? From: GUEST,Dita (at work) Date: 04 Mar 01 - 04:34 AM I'll have to listen to it again, but I think what I heard was "Geordie Boy". A Geordie is the affectionate name foe a native of Newcastle, North East England, and the people of Newcastle proudly refer to themselves as Geordies. love, john. |

Subject: RE: Help: Meaning of the term 'Jody Boy'? From: Jeri Date: 04 Mar 01 - 08:06 AM He's already been identified as a "Geordie," but a Jody is the guy who's back home, messing around with your girl and living an easy life, while you're off fighting a war. Jody features heavily in many US military cadence calls. See this cadence call. I remember in the 70's, there was a verse about Jody smoking all your dope, too. |

Subject: RE: Help: Meaning of the term 'Jody Boy'? (Geordie) From: GUEST Date: 27 Jun 14 - 02:31 PM at least we've been spared endless messages about what is the correct definition of a Geordie- no it's NOT a native of Newcastle upon Tyne- far more complicated than that- in my experience, about as rewarding as defining 'folk' music!!!! |
