Malcolm used to look after me when I was younger. he fed me cheese and pickle butties everytime I went to his house! As the years went by he inspired my love of music and helped me learn the guitar. He was such a likeable man and losing him is like losing your best plectrum - however you play a song, it will never sound quite the same. I know that he would have loved it when all his friends from near and far came together after his funeral - it is a shame that such a sad event was what it took to bring us all closer. I will never forget his hippy jeans with all the different tapestries! I think it would be nice if we all held a little concert in his memory, playing all his favorite songs. What does everybody think? |

I first knew Malc when I was 17 and he was in his early 30's and a local guitar legend. Years later after I moved away from, then moved back to, Leigh I found myself living close to a very dear lady to whom I and my family became very close - she was Stef's babysitter, a confidante to me - an all round good friend. It soon transpired she had a son, Malc - yes the one & only!! We renewed our acquaintance and he too became a close friend. He was an inspiration and mentor to Stef with her music - it was she who coined the 'Heads Together' name, and for a while we sang and played with him, Nick and Terry Fahy round at Malc's flat or the various folk club venues he organised/compered. Sometimes him mum came too, she throughly enjoyed it, often joining in the songs. Through Malc I renewed old friendships and made new ones. We were always welcome at his home at any time and have had many good times together. Malc, you are a dear friend, sadly missed. "We've been through some things together.....long may you run". |

He would often visit us like that out of the blue and I always looked forward to these visits. I remember watching Sham grow from a tiny puppy into a huge dog (well he was huge to me then!!!!) It is indicative of the man that all my memories of him are good ones. He was always ready to stop and chat and tell me wondeful stories of the good times he had and the wonderful people he had met.. I remember Malc spending hours trying to learn me how to play the guitar,I am not naturally gifted as he was and my crowning glory was learning Horse With No name!! so as any respectable musician with two left hands and a modicum of rythm I did the decent thing and bought a drum kit. I remember seeing some great bands with malc such as skeleton crew,we sneaked out of my sisters wedding reception to see them. I don`t think she has fully forgiven me for that. I remember going to see my favourite band (Blue Oyster Cult) at the T&C Club in Kentish Town . I remember Malc coming to see my various bands play and he was never critical but always helpful and would let me know where we were going wrong and I was over the moon when he played a song with us once at the Bowling Green. I remember a dog he had called Grace,a rottweiller who had tendency to knock herself out attacking her own shadow.. I have to say I am shocked as to how much i wil really miss him. I went to see him the day before the funeral with My nan (Elsie) who wanted to give him his birthday cards. He looked so peaceful as if he was dreaming,probably roaming in some field with his many friends reunited with Sham running around having a whale of a time. I would like to thank the musicians from the Courts Pub for the truly fitting send off,it did help to see so many people celebrating his life. To know that he had so many good friends has been a great help to all Malcs family and to myself personally it meant a great deal. I would like a copy of both the video and the CD if possible. The Paramedics who tried so hard to save his life, the Royal Bolton Hospital Emergency staff for all their help and consideration, the nurse from the hospital who came to see my husband and I who made us feel so much better when she said he did'nt suffer. All his friends from his various folk clubs he helped to run and attended. The barge people with who he had such a wonderful holiday the weekend before he died. The funeral director Paul Dainton and staff for their understanding and dignified funeral arrangements and all who attended the funeral. God bless you all |

We welcome you all here this afternoon into our church as we come and remember the life of Malcolm Disley, In some way or other he has affected our lives and we gather here to thank God for his life. Every one of you here has known Malcolm in some way or other, and your lives have been affected by him. I never had the privilege of meeting Malcolm, but over this last week I feel that I have learnt about him as I have shared with the family over these last days. He was a man who lived life to the full in the way that he wanted to live enjoying travelling around and leaving behind him a trail of happy memories. Malcolm leaves behind him his parents, a sister, and two sons: Matthew, with his wife Amanda, and Stephen. He also has two grandchildren, Lianne and Kara, who live in Australia. He had the privilege of being over there with his mum just last October, which turned out to be a really happy time together. Malcolm spent his time being his mother's carer, and had always time for her whatever he was doing, but he also had two very special things he devoted his life to. One of them was his animals. I understand that he looked after peoples' dogs while they were on holiday, and he had a particular knack of being able to train even the most stubborn of pets. They seemed to pick up a certain respect for him, and he spent many happy times looking after the dogs. This interest overflowed into his love for walking and being in the countryside and seeing the wild flowers, which has been reflected in the flowers today. He knew the names of the flowers, and they were part of his life. But something else which was a big part of Malcolm's life was his music. Malcolm lived for his folk music. He had a group called 'Heads Together' which played in the various folk clubs. Not only locally, but he travelled around the world with his guitar. He loved music, and at the beginning of the service we heard one of his favourite songs called 'You're Still The One". This was played constantly to Evelyn while she was decorating his flat, as it was so special. A little later we shall hear some of his music which he so loved performing. But, whatever he was doing, he had a special place in his heart for home and his mother, and never failed to keep in touch, always sending cards on Mother's Day, and other occasions. There was a special bond there, and, though they didn't always agree, they were always there for each other. Different sides of his character would emerge, and I heard stories of, while in Spain, he strapped his mum to the wheelchair, pulled her hat down on her head, and spoke abruptly to her, making other people stop and stare, and yet this was him only playing and fooling around. These are special memories that can never be taken away from each one of you, and give us reason to thank God for his life. But what about us that are left to carry on in this world? How do we continue to cope? Well, there is a verse from that Psalm that we read earlier that is special for you today: Even though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil. For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. It's a verse that's saying we must take time; we walk, we cannot hurry, because healing takes time. We must walk hand in hand with God, because he cares about us. Through the valleys, the dark times, God will lead the way if we only put our trust in him. God's love can surround us if we allow him to be our shepherd and our guide. Malcolm's spirit has already departed, and at this moment we are travelling through that dark valley. But remember that, if we walk with God, if we reach out and take his hand, he will lead us through the valley, and fill our lives with his love, and we remember the many happy memories we have of Malcolm's life. |

We sent Malc off in fine style with great singing and playing all afternoon and into the evening. It was no less than he deserved. Although it was a time of great sadness, it was also one of meeting old friends and making new ones. A Malc Disley memorial day idea was proposed ,hopefully it will come together-we will keep everyone posted on here.Thanks to everyone who played,especially Bernard, Nick,Jim and Helen from Mansfield and Carol.I know Malcs family were very touched by the music and the warm sharing of hearts. I met Malc in 1976 with a guitar in his hand and a harmonica around his neck, playing one of my favorites 'Out on the Weekend' since then he has been a musical inspiration to me as well as a good friend over the years. We shared an admiration for Martin guitars and of course the words and music of Neil Young which we all know he performed so well with that unique style of his own, a talent that was just amazing - a great privelidge to be with and to listen to, whatever he was playing. Will always rembember songs like Sugar Mountain, Out on the Weekend, Star of Bethlehem, Hepless, Long May You Run, as well as many more, the list could go on and on. His musical vocabulary was so wide spread from Blues, Folk, to all types of moderate rock music, someone who had so much passion for his music with the determination and ability to create that vocal harmony with acoustic sound that people just loved and amired, we all know he did it so well. The last time I saw Malc was around 5 weeks ago, again with a guitar in hand, I'm so gutted to know that he has left us - a friend and mucian who inspired all who new him. He will be truely missed. Nick - a great inspiration to Malc as he was to us Greatest symapthy to Malcs mum to whom Malc was so close, and loved dearly.

After that Malcs sister is having a buffet. Mathew, Malcs son suggested the courts for a drink after that. Malcs mum is overwelmed by the thought of live music playing at the funnerel and asked, if could bring the instruments and play later but not at the funnerel, she said, it would be to much for her. I'm still game for the courts on Sunday 8pm. I'll bring the video. Watched some of it last night. The sound needs working on. Bernard - I don't think I know Kim. I'll ask Malcs mum.

One of my favourite memories of him was the Four Fools Festival at Lowton a couple of years ago. I came out of a great singaround for a 'breath of fresh air' and there was Malc leaning back against the wall watching the sunset while dozens of people walked past him. When I asked him was he playing -he replied that he had lent his guitar to someone he had just met,as they had run out of strings. He knew that to keep it you had to give it away-and boy did he give it. We sat and laughed at life till we cried. I thought id been mugged the next morning my ribs ached that much. It is very rare that you meet someone with a deep understanding of people and their foibles. Malc Disley as everyone who knew him well will realise was such a person. He laughed at himself too in the knowledge that if we start to put ourselves above anyone else we are heading for a fall. Never once in all our time together was he ever bitter or cynical. He had a black sense of humour but it was always tongue in cheek. Malc loved life and would sing at the drop of a hat. It will be bloody hard to play Neil Young again. The world is a worse place for his leaving. We would all do well to view the world like Malc did-with good grace and a belly laugh. Goodbye mate-thanx forthe ride Phil |

However I'm sad to hear of his passing for by the descriptions in this thread I feel that he was one of those indespensable stalwarts who love the music and contribute to the scene selflessly. I was shocked that such a lovely and seemingly healthy person could go so suddenly. I will remember him for his friendliness, his enthusiasm, his sense of humour, and most of all his music. There was no warning - he went outside and was found dead in the street. He will be missed. His mother rang me with the news this morning; if you wish to send her a card her address is:
Mrs. E. Disley Clearly the funeral cannot be arranged until there has been an inquest; I will post details as they become known. Meanwhile, could everyone who knew him please post their memories of a lovely person to this thread, so that I can pass it on to his mum.
