There was some talk of holding a concert during the summer in a local field. A few of Malcs friends had expressed a wish to donate money to fund it. So I will keep you posted asap. Thanks Joan.

Was able to talk to Kurt and Jean on Monday evening - sorry for being slow in posting, I can't always access Mudcat during the week. Kurt said there's nothing definite arranged yet, he has been trying to find a weekend when everyone would be available, but is resigned to just picking a weekend and letting as many as can fall in with the arrangement. He will contact you, Carol.

(For the uninitiated, and those who may take offence at the above remark, Kurt is a good mate, German, with a wicked sense of humour!! The remark is intended affectionately rather than in the derogatory way it appears!)

That's the weekend of Chester Folk Festival, which I'd been planning on getting to, and a few others may be as well. I'd hate to miss out on a do for Malcolm, though. Kurt was supposed to be sorting out a weekend, as I remember. Has anyone heard from him, or know how to get in touch with him?

An excellent idea - and 'The Courts' is the only conceivable venue.

If the concert is only half as good as the wake was...

I am still in disbelief that I have lost such a precious person in my life. Malcolm used to look after me when I was younger. he fed me cheese and pickle butties everytime I went to his house! As the years went by he inspired my love of music and helped me learn the guitar.

He was such a likeable man and losing him is like losing your best plectrum - however you play a song, it will never sound quite the same.

I know that he would have loved it when all his friends from near and far came together after his funeral - it is a shame that such a sad event was what it took to bring us all closer.

I will never forget his hippy jeans with all the different tapestries!

I think it would be nice if we all held a little concert in his memory, playing all his favorite songs. What does everybody think?

A little late with this message. Malc was a very special person to us, as to everyone who knew him. I first knew Malc when I was 17 and he was in his early 30's and a local guitar legend. Years later after I moved away from, then moved back to, Leigh I found myself living close to a very dear lady to whom I and my family became very close - she was Stef's babysitter, a confidante to me - an all round good friend. It soon transpired she had a son, Malc - yes the one & only!! We renewed our acquaintance and he too became a close friend. He was an inspiration and mentor to Stef with her music - it was she who coined the 'Heads Together' name, and for a while we sang and played with him, Nick and Terry Fahy round at Malc's flat or the various folk club venues he organised/compered. Sometimes him mum came too, she throughly enjoyed it, often joining in the songs. Through Malc I renewed old friendships and made new ones. We were always welcome at his home at any time and have had many good times together. Malc, you are a dear friend, sadly missed. "We've been through some things together.....long may you run".

My earliest memories of my Uncle Malc are from when I was around seven yrs old and he appeared out of the blue one bonfire night, I was so chuffed to see him that I missed most of the fireworks!!. He would often visit us like that out of the blue and I always looked forward to these visits. I remember watching Sham grow from a tiny puppy into a huge dog (well he was huge to me then!!!!) It is indicative of the man that all my memories of him are good ones. He was always ready to stop and chat and tell me wondeful stories of the good times he had and the wonderful people he had met.. I remember Malc spending hours trying to learn me how to play the guitar,I am not naturally gifted as he was and my crowning glory was learning Horse With No name!! so as any respectable musician with two left hands and a modicum of rythm I did the decent thing and bought a drum kit. I remember seeing some great bands with malc such as skeleton crew,we sneaked out of my sisters wedding reception to see them. I don`t think she has fully forgiven me for that. I remember going to see my favourite band (Blue Oyster Cult) at the T&C Club in Kentish Town . I remember Malc coming to see my various bands play and he was never critical but always helpful and would let me know where we were going wrong and I was over the moon when he played a song with us once at the Bowling Green. I remember a dog he had called Grace,a rottweiller who had tendency to knock herself out attacking her own shadow.. I have to say I am shocked as to how much i wil really miss him. I went to see him the day before the funeral with My nan (Elsie) who wanted to give him his birthday cards. He looked so peaceful as if he was dreaming, probably roaming in some field with his many friends reunited with Sham running around having a whale of a time. I would like to thank the musicians from the Courts Pub for the truly fitting send off,it did help to see so many people celebrating his life. To know that he had so many good friends has been a great help to all Malcs family and to myself personally it meant a great deal. I would like a copy of both the video and the CD if possible. I would also love to hear from other people who knew him is you want to send me and E-Mail (I am writing this on a friends PC) I can be contacted on JohnGilman1@activemail.co.uk I can also be contacted at 22Husrt St,Leigh,Lancs,WN7 3AF. Anyway goodbye Uncle Malc `Long May You Run`

March 12th 1944 - March 6th 2001

Service led by Captain Kay Delamere
March 12th 2001
The Salvation Army
Cook Street
Leigh

(As Malcolm's coffin was carried in, Shania Twain's recording 'You're Still The One' was playing)

We welcome you all here this afternoon into our church as we come and remember the life of Malcolm Disley, In some way or other he has affected our lives and we gather here to thank God for his life.

Every one of you here has known Malcolm in some way or other, and your lives have been affected by him. I never had the privilege of meeting Malcolm, but over this last week I feel that I have learnt about him as I have shared with the family over these last days.

He was a man who lived life to the full in the way that he wanted to live enjoying travelling around and leaving behind him a trail of happy memories.

Malcolm leaves behind him his parents, a sister, and two sons: Matthew, with his wife Amanda, and Stephen. He also has two grandchildren, Lianne and Kara, who live in Australia. He had the privilege of being over there with his mum just last October, which turned out to be a really happy time together.

Malcolm spent his time being his mother's carer, and had always time for her whatever he was doing, but he also had two very special things he devoted his life to.

One of them was his animals. I understand that he looked after peoples' dogs while they were on holiday, and he had a particular knack of being able to train even the most stubborn of pets. They seemed to pick up a certain respect for him, and he spent many happy times looking after the dogs. This interest overflowed into his love for walking and being in the countryside and seeing the wild flowers, which has been reflected in the flowers today. He knew the names of the flowers, and they were part of his life.

But something else which was a big part of Malcolm's life was his music. Malcolm lived for his folk music. He had a group called 'Heads Together' which played in the various folk clubs. Not only locally, but he travelled around the world with his guitar.

He loved music, and at the beginning of the service we heard one of his favourite songs called 'You're Still The One". This was played constantly to Evelyn while she was decorating his flat, as it was so special.

A little later we shall hear some of his music which he so loved performing.

But, whatever he was doing, he had a special place in his heart for home and his mother, and never failed to keep in touch, always sending cards on Mother's Day, and other occasions. There was a special bond there, and, though they didn't always agree, they were always there for each other.

Different sides of his character would emerge, and I heard stories of, while in Spain, he strapped his mum to the wheelchair, pulled her hat down on her head, and spoke abruptly to her, making other people stop and stare, and yet this was him only playing and fooling around.

These are special memories that can never be taken away from each one of you, and give us reason to thank God for his life.

But what about us that are left to carry on in this world? How do we continue to cope? Well, there is a verse from that Psalm that we read earlier that is special for you today:

Even though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil. For you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

It's a verse that's saying we must take time; we walk, we cannot hurry, because healing takes time. We must walk hand in hand with God, because he cares about us. Through the valleys, the dark times, God will lead the way if we only put our trust in him. God's love can surround us if we allow him to be our shepherd and our guide.

Malcolm's spirit has already departed, and at this moment we are travelling through that dark valley. But remember that, if we walk with God, if we reach out and take his hand, he will lead us through the valley, and fill our lives with his love, and we remember the many happy memories we have of Malcolm's life.

Thanks WYSIWIG I can assure you that the hangover said it all Tuesday morning. We sent Malc off in fine style with great singing and playing all afternoon and into the evening. It was no less than he deserved. Although it was a time of great sadness, it was also one of meeting old friends and making new ones. A Malc Disley memorial day idea was proposed ,hopefully it will come together-we will keep everyone posted on here. Thanks to everyone who played, especially Bernard, Nick,Jim and Helen from Mansfield and Carol.I know Malcs family were very touched by the music and the warm sharing of hearts.

Was it anything like this?

JOHNNY BURKE

(Paul Mercer)

Oh now wasn't it my sister just today gave me the word
And wasn't it myself could not believe it when I heard
And didn't I just see him there the other day in town
Now they tell me Johnny passed away this morning

So it's farewell to the vaudeville and farewell to the stage
And likewise to his old time songs,
Now weren't they all the rage
When the newsboys sold them through the streets
A penny for a page
For Johnny Burke who passed away this morning

Now there never was a shipwreck, a murder or a time
That didn't get recorded in a ballad or a rhyme
It seemed he always had the gift to coin the perfect line
Old Johnny Burke who passed away this morning

There were plays in every theatre from the Nickel to the Star
And the houses packed at every show as they came from near and far
And he left them standing in their seats and shouting out for more
From Johnny Burke who passed away this morning

Oh now won't there be a funeral and won't we have a wake
And won't there be a friend to say goodbye for old times' sake
And remember how he made us laugh until our sides would ache
Old Johnny Burke who passed away this morning

But from time to time as years go by with fires burning low
We may think about some old time song we heard long years ago
And we'll see him there in his bowler hat with his old clay pipe aglow
Old Johnny Burke who passed away this morning

Copyright Paul Mercer, 1984

Over the weekend, this turned up on an old tape I'd lost years and years ago. I could not help but think of you all.

So deeply shocked to hear the very sad news. I met Malc in 1976 with a guitar in his hand and a harmonica around his neck, playing one of my favorites 'Out on the Weekend' since then he has been a musical inspiration to me as well as a good friend over the years. We shared an admiration for Martin guitars and of course the words and music of Neil Young which we all know he performed so well with that unique style of his own, a talent that was just amazing - a great privelidge to be with and to listen to, whatever he was playing. Will always rembember songs like Sugar Mountain, Out on the Weekend, Star of Bethlehem, Hepless, Long May You Run, as well as many more, the list could go on and on. His musical vocabulary was so wide spread from Blues, Folk, to all types of moderate rock music, someone who had so much passion for his music with the determination and ability to create that vocal harmony with acoustic sound that people just loved and amired, we all know he did it so well. The last time I saw Malc was around 5 weeks ago, again with a guitar in hand, I'm so gutted to know that he has left us - a friend and mucian who inspired all who new him. He will be truely missed.

Nick - a great inspiration to Malc as he was to us

Greatest symapthy to Malcs mum to whom Malc was so close, and loved dearly.

Play it again Mal! The first time was sweet but much too short. Play us that one about the man who had been thru all there was to be thru, keeping on for the sake of a seeing us smile. England has lost her kindest soul, a loving son and a damn fine guitar picker. Sing him back home, dear Lord (and make sure you're in tuned to G Flat!).

Bernard, thanks for letting me know about this, and for sharing this wonderful man with me. He comes through quite clearly in all the things people posted.

From this great distance, I'm thinking, well gosh, what can I do...

I know... I can cherish even more outrageously the people I know, especially the one or two in Malcolm's class. Yup. Next time I even think about holding back-- I'll think of the love this man sent out 'rouind the world, and I'll crank it up to the max.

Can you tell me about the funeral? And did you all get together then as you planned?

I'm about to start sending around (to Mudcatters) my gospel music library on audio tapes... if I had a copy of the video you've mentioned I'd send that around too, so that it could circulate around the US and UK Mudcatters that have signed on to receive them.

I would love to come to the Courts on Sunday but unfortunately have a gig I can't get out of. I'll be thinking of you all.

Joan

Carol - if you click here, you can have a Mudcat ID, instead of being a 'Guest' - that way people can send you 'Personal Messages', which are the Mudcat alternative to email.

Lecture over... :o)

'Course you know Kim! 7 foot tall Essex blonde, mid twenties, legs up to her armpits...

She used to live next door to Malc, and sometimes worked behind the bar at the Grove.

Funneral Details

1pm - Service at Salvation army Cook Street Leigh just off railway road (get your tamborines out guys!)

1.45 - Leigh Cemetery Manchester Road.

After that Malcs sister is having a buffet. Mathew, Malcs son suggested the courts for a drink after that.

Malcs mum is overwelmed by the thought of live music playing at the funnerel and asked, if could bring the instruments and play later but not at the funnerel, she said, it would be to much for her.

I'm still game for the courts on Sunday 8pm. I'll bring the video. Watched some of it last night. The sound needs working on.

Bernard - I don't think I know Kim. I'll ask Malcs mum.

Just try keeping me away...

I'll see who else I can round up, too - the non-Mudcatters, like Julie (Jackie is far too ill), and maybe one or two from the Railway.

Just a thought - has anyone been in touch with Kim? Both the phone numbers I have for her just give the 'discontinued' tone. I sort of assumed Elsie (Malc's ma) or Carol would have contacted her...

Unless I hear differently, I'll see you all at the Courts on Sunday. Don't forget yer fiddle, Nick!

I don't know if this message will reach it's destination. . . we have too many security precautions here. The last couple of days I have been walking around in a daze. Since Sunday morning I have realised that over the last 3 1/2 years, since I first met Malc, most of my social life has connectionns to him, either directly or indirectly. He was a great friend and inspiration. It's also true that 99% of everything I play on the fiddle was learnt with him, & would glad of every & any oppertunity to play it in his honour & memory. I will miss him as I would miss my right arm. Well at least he'll know the truth about that star of Bethlehem now! Good on yer Malc! Nick.

Phil - look here: Lyrics blicky

Maybe we could all meet up at, say, the Courts on Sunday evening, and work something out?

I know Nick will be devastated (as we all are); Malc gave Nick the push he needed to play his fiddle in public...

Count me in for a video! I can arrange for it to be professionally copied, if you like.

I reckon 'Long May You Run' - it would be good if we could arrange to do it live...

I have just been given a video of Malc taped last week when we were playing on the canal in Worsley. Copies anybody?

No definate day for the funneral, although his mum is banking on Monday, Malcs birthday. She asked me what song should she play for him? I can understand how difficult that would be because Malc played a lot of good music. I thought of Time (Absent Friends) or Long May You Run?

Burl how right you are that he was a stalwart. One of my favourite memories of him was the Four Fools Festival at Lowton a couple of years ago. I came out of a great singaround for a 'breath of fresh air' and there was Malc leaning back against the wall watching the sunset while dozens of people walked past him. When I asked him was he playing -he replied that he had lent his guitar to someone he had just met,as they had run out of strings. He knew that to keep it you had to give it away-and boy did he give it. We sat and laughed at life till we cried. I thought id been mugged the next morning my ribs ached that much. It is very rare that you meet someone with a deep understanding of people and their foibles. Malc Disley as everyone who knew him well will realise was such a person. He laughed at himself too in the knowledge that if we start to put ourselves above anyone else we are heading for a fall. Never once in all our time together was he ever bitter or cynical. He had a black sense of humour but it was always tongue in cheek. Malc loved life and would sing at the drop of a hat. It will be bloody hard to play Neil Young again. The world is a worse place for his leaving. We would all do well to view the world like Malc did-with good grace and a belly laugh. Goodbye mate-thanx forthe ride Phil

It's a long time since I sang at Leigh folk club and I'm not even sure that I knew Malcolm. By sight perhaps, but not by name. However I'm sad to hear of his passing for by the descriptions in this thread I feel that he was one of those indespensable stalwarts who love the music and contribute to the scene selflessly. We really do need people like that. It's sad to see one go. My sincere condolences to his family, and to all at Leigh Folk Club.

Just thought I'd share this with you - I found the perfect card to send to his mum. The verse could well have been written specifically for Malc: Your loved one
was someone very special
who meant a lot to others...
May it bring you some comfort
to know that their memory
will always be cherished.

We won't forget you, mate...

I didn't know him that well but his visits to Swinton were always a pleasure. Good songs, performed well. Dues always paid, never any hastle. We need more like him - not less! That big doorman in the sky recruits all the best ones doesn't he....

Phil Seddon came over to Wigan tonight bearing the sad tidings. I was shocked that such a lovely and seemingly healthy person could go so suddenly. I will remember him for his friendliness, his enthusiasm, his sense of humour, and most of all his music. Several of "his" songs were sung tonight, but they will never sound the same again. Long may you run, Malc.

Joan

When we find out what took him from us, perhaps we could organise a folk night to raise a donation for the appropriate charity in his memory?

'The Courts' would be an apt venue, perhaps?

Sad news.

Malcolm Disley from Leigh in Lancashire died last night.

There was no warning - he went outside and was found dead in the street.

He will be missed.

His mother rang me with the news this morning; if you wish to send her a card her address is:

Mrs. E. Disley
82 Orchard Close
LEIGH
LANCS
WN7 1NY

Clearly the funeral cannot be arranged until there has been an inquest; I will post details as they become known.

Meanwhile, could everyone who knew him please post their memories of a lovely person to this thread, so that I can pass it on to his mum.

I'm not sure of his exact age, but he would probably be about 58.

In the words of his favourite song 'Long May You Roll', Malcolm!

Yer mate, Bernard.
