Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Deckman Date: 05 Mar 01 - 07:52 PM HEY HEY! Thanks a lot! That's a real treasure. One of my bigger regrets was missing Woody by three hours. It was in Seattle, back in the early 50's. John Coughlin called, said get over here, Woody is expected. I forget why I took three hours to get there, some girl probably, but he was gone when I got there. MY LOSS. CHEERS, Bob |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jul 03 - 04:25 PM Hi, Russ - We may be the best online source for Woody Guthrie lyrics and tunes, although we rarely have chords (click to see what we have). Another great online source is the one I posted above, The Songs of Woody Guthrie. Woody wrote a vast number of songs, and no Website or book has them all. I suppose the easiest place to get lyrics and chords for Woody Guthrie songs is the "Rise Up Singing" songbook. It has 22 Woody Guthrie songs. If you want lyrics and tunes, Sing Out! Magazine has two volumes of The Collected Reprints from Sing Out! The Folk song Magazine. The "pink book" (vol 1-6) has 27 Guthrie songs, and the "blue book" (vol 7-12) has 15. There was a wonderful book reissued recently by University of Nebraska Press, Hard-Hitting Songs for Hard-Hit People, by Seeger, Lomax, and Guthrie. It has lots of Woody's songs, but it's quite expensive and I see it's out of print again. As far as I can tell, there is no definitive Woody Guthrie songbook currently in print - and that's a shame. You may want to check http://www.woodyguthrie.org and see what information they have. -Joe Offer (e-mail sent)- |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Candyman(inactive) Date: 05 Jul 03 - 05:04 PM I suppose the easiest place to get lyrics and chords for Woody Guthrie songs is the "Rise Up Singing" songbook. It has 22 Woody Guthrie songs. A more complete source is the "Woody Guthrie Songbook" edited by Nora Guthrie (Woody's daughter, Arlo's sister) and Judy Bell. It is available from the on-line catalogue at www.woodyguthrie.org. It sells for $15.00 and there are 48 songs included: This Land Is Your Land So Long It's Been Good to Know Yuh Pastures of Plenty Deportee Do Re Mi Oklahoma Hills Roll, On Columbia Vigilante Man This Train is Bound for Glory Woody's Rag-Hard Work Dying Miner 1913 Massacre Union Maid I've Got to Know Jackhammer John Grand Coulee Dam Biggest Thing That Man Has Ever Done Jesus Christ Tom Joad Pretty Boy Floyd East Texas Red Dead or Alive Gypsy Davy Philadelphia Lawyer Takin' It Easy Woman At Home New York Town Talking Dust Bowl Dust Can't Kill Me Dust Storm Disaster I Ain't Got No Home Hard Travelin' Dust Pneumonia Blues Going Down the Road Ramblin' Round Sinking of the Reuben James Little Seed Howdido Why Oh Why Cleano Mail Myself to You Jig Along Home Put Your Finger in the Air All Work Together Bling-Blang My Daddy (Flies A Ship in the Sky) Riding in My Car Grassey Grass Grass (Grow, Grow, Grow. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Art Thieme Date: 06 Jul 03 - 09:43 PM I had THE NEARLY COMPLETE SONGS OF WOODY GUTHRIE. It was a fine collection with wonderful illustrations which were by Woody. I used it for years and years until it fell apart and literally blew away one night I was coming home from a gig in Wisconsin with the windows open so the late December winds might keep me awake at the wheel. I do hope the folks that found those pages are singing 'em still. Art Thieme |
Subject: Woody on BBC R4 From: Steve Parkes Date: 07 Jul 03 - 05:21 AM I still have my copy, Art. Only one the covers has disappeared so far: do you think I'm not making enough use of it? There's a programme on BBC Radio 4, for those who can get it, this Thursday (July 10) at 11.30 am BST. I think it's more about his jottings and sketches than his songs: should be interesting. Steve |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jul 03 - 01:06 PM The Nearly Complete Collection of Woody Guthrie Folk Songs is the one I've been after for quite some time. It's a softcover book, and I see used copies listed for $40 and $75 - too expensive for me. Seems to me that somebody ought to reissue this book. I suppose the 48-song Hal Leonard book sounds OK, but it sure seems a better book than that should be available. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Mark Ross Date: 08 Jul 03 - 12:30 AM I've been trying to convince Nora Guthrie to reissue THE NEARLY COMPLETE WG but she says that there are too many errors. Personally I don't think that matters, maybe other Mudcatters could write to her at the Woody Guthrie Foundation and help convince her. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie songbook From: Joan from Wigan Date: 08 Jul 03 - 03:35 AM About the BBC Radio 4 programme that Steve Parkes mentioned above, the Radio Times has two sets of notes, the first from their "Choices" (recommended programmes) column, the second from the programmes column itself: (1) Remembered for his acerbically witty songs documenting the suffering of the poor and the powerless, Woody Guthrie's more intimate writings are little known but just as prolific, preserved in the form of doodlings. Luckily, he hoarded all he created. His daughter Nora brings his legacy to light with the help of Lou Reed, Michael Franti, Ani DiFranco, and DJ Logic. (2) The Woody Guthrie Archive in New York holds his writings - in notebooks, even on paper bags and cigarette packets. His daughter Nora, who acts as both protector and caretaker of his work, presents her latest project, which brings together Guthrie's most intimate diaries and an unlikely group of famous musicians and artists. |
