Lyrics copied from http://www.gurlpages.com/princessjj/_GURLF_/lyrics3.html (That site contains lots more Helen Kane songs

IF I KNEW YOU BETTER
(Hart/Rodgers)

I just hate conventions;
They make life a plan.
Please trust my good intentions.
Oh, I'll do the best I can.
Let's get old and show them.
Oh, it's fun to think you've been!
Let's take the rules and throw them
Out to the old four winds. 'Cause…

If I knew you better, I'd hold you tight,
And if you knew me better, you'd think it was all right.
They say in time, love does away with all fear.
Let us pretend that we've known each other for years.

Huh? If I knew you better?

Let's pretend we quarreled, when I met you, just then,
And now we kiss, and we make up again.
Oh, if I knew you better, why, I'd build you a castle for two,
For what could be better than loving you?

Let's say that we quarreled when I met you, just then?
And now we can kiss, and make up again.
Oh, if I knew you better, why, I'd build you a castle, for two.
For, what could be better than loving you?

[Recorded by Helen Kane and included in "Classic Years -- 1928-1930: Boop-Boop-A-Doop Girl," Louisiana Red Hot CD #323, 1999.]

Sorcha: Still didn't win the gold ring. I think every thing Hart ever wrote must be there except 'If I Knew You Better'. Thanks for the help, though.

Spud, I found a site that sells a CD of Helen Kane singing it, and I found this site with L. Hart lyrics, but not that one. Lots of others, just scroll down a bit to the titles. There is also a link to another Hart lyrics site on that page.

While I can't give the lyric, I can say that a few years ago I walked into a music shop in London and asked them to get me a copy of the "You Don't know the half of it, dearie, blues" by G & I Gershwin. This was not the first time I'd done this to an unsuspecting music shop - but it was the first time it worked! I'd been after this number from "Lady Be Good" (ca. 1926) for about ten years, and someone was good enough to republish a "Gems From Lady Be Good" selection which included it. The computer age has some virtues, which include short runs of old song music from time to time. Why shouldn't it work for you? Give it a try!

Rogers & Hart wrote this and Helen Kane recorded it in 1928 or 1930. It was probably first heard in one of the many musicals of that time. (Paramount?) It is one track of a current CD by Louisiana Red Hot (released 1998) that is a collection of Kane's songs. The problem is in the vocalist's enunciation. It is simply unintelligible. I have searched Heptune and Thepeaches and several others including Memorylane without any luck.
