I don't want to ruffle any Canadian feathers here, but come on now !!!!! A two hour show on national television and Male Artist of the Year only gets his name read aloud - less than two seconds of recognition ? Even if you can't stand the guy, two seconds ???!!! I'm not going to go on a rant because it would take two hours to do any justice to it after the apalling spectacle I witnessed last night on Canada's most coveted music awards gala..... ( after the ECMA's, of course ).

I would like to hear from other Canucks - was it just me ?

gnu ( and right now, that's a nickname that fits !!! )

I stopped having any respect for the Junos when they selected Bryan Adams over Bruce Cockburn for best male vocalist (1983).

As far as selection of one artist/group over another, I don't have any problems with the selections. The way I look at the "odd to me" choices, like the one you cite, is that my opinion is only mine and, "Who am I to judge/argue ?"

My real beef is the show itself. How can you take up taxpayers' air time with some of the garbage that was on that show and justify not giving artists their 15 minutes, even if the example I cited was Neil Young, who could care less about exposure on the CBC ?

Alex,

Are you trying trying to be clever with your flippant comment? Just for the record, Bruce Cockburn has won ten Junos over the years, most recently for Best Roots/Traditional Solo Album in 2000. Last night, his induction into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame was one of the main foci of the 2001 Awards.

Bruce will be the first to tell you that he's been done well by the Junos.

BTW, Bryan Adams did win the Best Male Vocalist Award in 1983. The other nominees were Burton Cummings, Gordon Lightfoot, Murray McLauchlan and Aldo Nova. Bruce was not entered that year.

Sorry; I meant 1984.

Clever? Flippant? Sirrah, you presume overmuch. Why can't somebody's remarks be taken at face value? Are the Junos such a sacred cow to you that you must defend them with calumny, and further take any negative comment about them as "flippant"? I didn't realize they were a religion; I just thought it was an industry award.

Sheesh.

They just didn't want to bring up the fact that Neil was on a brief leave from the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed where he has been undergoing therapy with tiples and noseflutes for paranoia and a nasty carbuncle on his lower right cheek.

Now, I've had a carbuncle ( is that the same as a ganglion ? - because I had a ganglion, which sounds much more sophisticated than a carbuncle ) on my wrist from shovelling snow for three hours and then playing Hran in a two hour session, but how do you get one on your"lower right cheek"... or should I ask ?

gnu, I don't believe so. A ganglion is a liquid filled blister on a tendon sheath, a carbuncle is a gigantic bunch of boils........nasty things. Think the biggest, ugliest zit you've ever seen, and make it worse.

Oh my !!! I've heard of carbuncles, but always described more like the ganglion I had, which robbed me of nearly a year and a half of ( good ) Hran playing and. definitely no bones during recovery, or since, for that matter. Come to think of it, more than 1 1/2 years for the Hran because I am still trying to get back to where I was technically a few years ago. If there was ever a case for stretching and warming up, I'm it. You pickers should take notice as well. Don't mix snow shovelling and wild sessions.

BTW, if anyone actually did what my doctor suggested be done for my ganglion, after the usual, "Don't use it for a year and see.", which was cortisone shots and, failing results from the shots, surgery, how did you fair ? I've heard cortisone and surgery are a waste of time, pain and money.

One part of my treatment was to get a snowblower - not covered under medicare.

I had a ganglion for years, it was never much of a problem. It just looked a bit odd. There was never any pain. The doctor said that he could cut it out if it got worse, or if I wanted it gone. The 'folk' remedy of course is 'Hit it with the Family Bible'. I opted for neither of those options and just left it alone.

I was a boilermaker at the time and did a lot of hammering. Eventually I got an office job and the thing faded slowly. It took about two years or more to disappear completely without any treatment.

Bert.

All award shows suck that way... please... they serve no useful purpose but self promotion... I quit having any interest in them at all a few years ago, and I've never been happier

The Junos? I never watch them. I really detest award shows of that kind. I can understand their value to the artists involved as far as promoting their career, but I don't like the whole glitzy format and the commercial aspects. It's as if the industry takes a night on which to have a self-congratulatory series of multiple orgasms in a public place. It's tacky. I'd rather have folk festivals and just go by word of mouth as to who is a great performer. That gives the power back to the people.

It's also damned silly to say that anyone is necessarily the "best" in a given field of endeavour.

And who needs a dumb little statue? There should be a recycling depot somewhere for those things.
