My brother thought it was "Dear saint of Argyll", which historically might indeed be true, since Argyll was part of Strathclyde, a British kingdom, when Patrick was alad, and he was the right side of the country toi be kidnapped by Irish slavers.

But that bit about the CHILDREN resisting unto death.... same as in Faith of Our Fathers, the adults were always wishing the children to die for the fate, we thought, if there was any dying to be done it should be the adults who do it.

Going to Catholic primary school in England, way back when, we used to sing this song. Being English, the line "dear saint of our isle" used to confuse me somewhat.

HAIL, GLORIOUS ST. PATRICK
(words: Sister Agnes / tune: ancient Irish melody, 1920)

Hail, glorious St. Patrick, dear saint of our isle,
On us thy poor children bestow a sweet smile;
And now thou art high in the mansions above,
On Erin's green valleys look down in thy love.

(optional repeat)
On Erin's green valleys, on Erin's green valleys,
On Erin's green valleys look down in thy love.

Hail, glorious St. Patrick, thy words were once strong
Against Satan's wiles and a heretic throng;
Not less is thy might where in Heaven thou art;
Oh, come to our aid, in our battle take part!

In a war against sin, in the fight for the faith,
Dear Saint, may thy children resist to the death;
May their strength be in meekness, in penance, and prayer,
Their banner the Cross, which they glory to bear.

Thy people, now exiles on many a shore,
Shall love and revere thee till time be no more;
And the fire thou hast kindled shall ever burn bright,
Its warmth undiminished, undying its light.

Ever bless and defend the sweet land of our birth,
Where the shamrock still blooms as when thou wert on earth,
And our hearts shall yet burn, wherever we roam,
For God and St. Patrick, and our native home.

Wasn't able to locate chords with a cursory search. Will look more tomorrow. Have posted lyrics in event someone knows the chording. Will make it easier for them to put them in the text.

Maybe some 'catters could try writing a song for St. Jude - I'm sure we've all identified with the 'hopeless cases' vibe at various points in our lives!!! I imagine Jude to have a bit of a sense of humour.
By the way, praying to him really DOES get you out of a tight spot. All my friends (and some non-friends) would make me recite his prayer before exams, and we'd never fail as miserably as we deserved to.
Seriously, though, he does help the hopeless sinners, especially the lapsed, like me, who haven't been to church for ages, and are seen as undeserving by all the other saints!
Try it:
Prayer to St. Jude (To be said in cases despaired of)
St.Jude, Glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the true Church invokes you universally as the Patron of things despaired of; pray for me, who am so miserable; pray for me, that finally I may receive the consolations and the succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly [here make your request], and that I may bless God with the Elect throughout Eternity. - Amen.
St. Jude, Apostle, martyr and relative of our Lord Jesus Christ, of Mary and of Joseph, intercede for us.
Now if THAT ain't the blues, I don't know WHAT is!!!

Hey, Bruce, there are people who call me ancient, and I'm quite sure that you are older than I am. I'll post the tunes later, for what they're worth.

Joe didn't give the tune for "Hail, Glorious St. Partrick", because there no extant ancient Irish melodies!

St. Patrick sure knew how to get good press. His missionary work in Ireland was a dismal failure, with only a handfull of converts. I did bring awakening to the Irish that there were other possible religions, and later missionaries had an easier time of it.

Nope. Didn't find any hymns to St. Jude. I found al sorts of off-the-wall saints like Maria Goretti and Joan of Arc and John Baptist de la Salle (Manufacturer of Christian Brothers brandy), St. Ursula, and St. Cecelia (patron saint of organists - song is "Let the Deep Organ Swell the Lay"). You'd think with all that, they could afford one song to St. Jude, patron of hopeless cases.

St. Jude should not be confused with St. Rita, "Patron Saint of the Impossible." Rita doesn't attach any strings to the process of accomplishing the impossible. Jude, on the other hand, has a real racket going. Tradition has it that prayers to St. Jude must be published in order for them to work. I have always had the impression that this cult was started by a newspaper publisher. Our local advertising newspaper always has three or four ads that are prayers to St. Jude. Can't say I agree with that sort of theology, and it's not officially recognized by the Catholic Church. If you look on it as folklore, it's kind of an interesting tradition. In fact, most of the practices connected with veneration of the saints are best looked upon as folklore.

I never did get the connection between St. Jude and Danny Thomas, but there's something there...

Joe O, isn't saint Rita the Patron of peole in danger, or hopeless cases or something. I only know because I support Everton Football Club (NOT Liverpool, as you would expect from a Liverpudlian!) and my friend's grandmother taught us that whenever Everton were losing a match (which happened quite a lot) we should say:
Dear Saint Rita, give Everton a goal".
It didn't always work! Thanks for the St. Patrick hymn.

P.S. I know a prayer, but do you know any hymns to Saint Jude, Patron of Cases Despaired of?
Thanks,
Tiggerdooley, a good Catholic girl....

Hmmm. Now here's a hymn to St. Francis Xavier, another soldier of the Church. Note the multipurpose verse. Apparently, Patrick dealt with heretics and Frank took care of the infidels....
-Joe Offer-

Hymn to Saint Francis Xavier

Oh, Father Saint Francis, we kneel at thy feet,
While blessings and favors we beg and entreat,
That thou from thy bright throne in heaven above
Wouldst look on thy clients with pity and love.
Saint Francis Xavier, Oh pray for us!
Saint Francis Xavier, Oh pray for us!

Oh, Father Saint Francis, thy words were once strong
Against Satan's wiles and an infidel throng.
Not less is thy might where in heaven thou art;
Oh, come to our aid, in our battle take part.
Saint Francis Xavier, Oh pray for us!
Saint Francis Xavier, Oh pray for us!

Never heard that one, either. I belonged to St. Rita's Parish in Racine, Wisconsin. St. Rita's song went like this:

O blessed Saint to who God grants
Power to open his dear heart
From it to pour full streams of grace
Open to us his heart.

CHORUS
Pray, St. Rita, pray for us today
Pray now and always, for us that love thee
Pray in our sorrow, pray in our need
With thee Saint Rita,
We thy clients plead

(gee, I can't believe I still remember it)

In my seminary days, we used to have a great time digging up the tackiest hymns we could find. These three certainly qualify.

I grew up in a very Catholic family in Detroit and southeastern Wisconsin in the 1950's and 1960's, and never heard this one - even in my 8 years in a Catholic seminary. Of course, we were "liberal" Catholics...

We used to sing it at school. It begins:
Hail Glorious St. Patrick, dear Saint of our isle
On us thy poor children bestow a sweet smile...
and so on, then the chorus goes:
On Erin's Green Valley, on Erin's Green Valley...
etc, but I think there may be more than just one verse and the chorus.
It's quite well known, I think, so I'm sure lot's of you can help!
