We Five were managed by Frank Weber, the manager of the Kingston Trio. Mike Stewart, the lead singer and arranger of We Five, was the brother of John Stewart of the Kingston Trio, and wrote several songs for them.

Apparently he had some small success at it too. In the foreword of "Wounds to Bind" Sylvia Fricker mentions she and Ian were booed in London for performing what the audience thought was Brit-Pop! On the upside she also wrote We Five/Pepsi paid for her mortgage and the kids' college education.

@maeve - the recording you provided is snappy, up-tempo and (shall I say) - funny!
The intro starts with a drum track (with no drummer in sight). The amplified bass
and guitars have no patch cords (or amps) and finally, the blended harmonies are
delivered with no mics in sight. If this recording was lip-synced then We Five did a
great job of moving and grooving to the song.

I recall hearing this in 1965. The exciting part was not the singing, it was the ominous "drumming" coming from the bass guitar. You can hear it well at the end of the video.

An Italian group, Equipe 84, recorded a translated version ("Io Ho In Mente Te") on the Dischi Recordi label, along with several other translated American songs of the same era.

The catalog number is MRL6053

Brazil 65 - not 66! 66 was commercial pap in comparison.

First my personal story: As a lad of 14 or 15, I went to see the Smothers Brothers at the grand Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. To my immense pleasure and surprise, the opening act was Sergio Mendes and Brazil 65! I'd never heard them before and my world was changed forever for the better. Great pianist Mendes, towering bass player Sebastaio Neto, amazing Paulinho on drums and percussion, and the most wonderful, sexy and fresh vocalist Wanda de Sah just opened up my world of music. The one and only Brazil 65 album is now on CD, and Wanda Sa has played in New York in the past few years. I don't know what became of Rosinha de Vaklencia, but she played the most exquisite nylon string guitar, better than Tom Jobim ever did...

I'm still in the pre-Beverly Blivens chapters but it's bringing back a lot of memories about that side of the music "bidness" (good, bad and in-betweens.)

"You Were On My Mind" was written, circa 1964, by Sylvia (Fricker) Tyson. She's recorded it several times on Ian & Sylvia and solo albums.

The version by the We Five sanitized some of the lyrics.

There was also a version (probably nearer the We Five recording) by Crispian St.Peters which was a No.2 Smash 'hit' in the UK charts in 1966.

What is interesting about the song is that Ian & Sylvia recorded the version described by Roger on their "Northern Journey" album, but the version published in the "Ian & Sylvia" songbook (1965, M Witmark & Sons) could have been transcribed from the We Five hit version. The Chad Midtchell Trio (Typical American Boys) recorded a version much like the original Ian & Sylvia version . When Ian & Sylvia rerecorded it in 1972 (Ian & Sylvia and The Great Speckled Bird, You Were On My Mind) the song was like the book, i.e. the We Five phrasing. Sylvia recorded it again more recently on her solo CD "You Were On My Mind" and again it is the second version. Since I learned it before the We Five recording came out, I am biased in favor of the first version.

BK, if I have this right, Astrud was married to Brazilian guitarist-singer Joao Gilberto, and they performed with composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. The three made the famous recording of "Girl from Ipanema" with Stan Getz in 1963 - before Brasil '66. Oh, what a voice that woman had.

Remember the failing memory; as best I can recall - for what that's worth - Astrud Gilbertio was with Brazil '66 before going on her own, and/or teaming up with... can't remember his name, but he was a well known composer-performer in the latin world; I think there was also another long blonde-looking gal. For some reason I want to think of her name as ??Lonnie?? Lannie?? or something like that.. Makes me want to dig out the old albums to see if anything I recall is right... Right!.. as soon as the memo's are done, (and whenever I can find the boxes the albums are in!).

rich - I only just found out about Quartette, and the death of one of the founding members, very sad, but I'm certainly looking foreward to hearing them.. I hope (expect?) they will be performing outside of Canada.

A little more on the song and nothing new about We Five other than that my college roommate had 2 of their albums and I once had copies on reel to reel tape that has since disntegrated. Ah the old Wollensack.

I think my favorite version of You Were On My MInd was done by the Chad Mitchell Trio on their "Typical American Boys" album. Their version is like the original Ian & Sylvia version, rather than We Five's. The later recording by Ian & Sylvia bore much more resemblance to the We Five lyrics and phrasing than it did to the original on "Northern Journey". The album was called: Ian & Sylvia and The Great Speckled Bird - You Were On My Mind (Columbia KC 31337, 1972). The Sylvia Tyson CD is available in the USA as "Sylvia Tyson - You Were On My Mind", I don't have the number here because the CD is in my office and I'm not (unlike some other federal employees that frequent and who shall remain nameless [starts with the 6th note on the scale] I don't log on from work ). That CD also contains both English and French versions of "Pepere's Mill" which was also on Quartette's first recording.

Well, BK, Collectors Choice has an import CD of "Guantanamera" by the Sandpipers, but it's $24. Stick with the Pozo Seco Singers for now, and the Sandpipers will come out soon. I swear I've seen Brasil '66 CD's, but I don't know where. Astrud Gilberto on Brasil '66? Gee I didn't know that. No wonder that lead voice sounded familiar.

God, I hope so!! this is really fantastic - I'm going to get the We Five CD's as soon as I can. I have long been an Ian & Sylvia fan and liked the song when I first heard it there, but feel the definitive version was by the We Five. I also think they do the definitive - and truly fantastic - version of "cast your fate to the wind." I can't rremember which of their albums it's on, so I hope it's on the CD.

Now if only..... some of my other favorite 60's stuff will just get re-released on CD, such as... any/all of the Sandpipers albums, the original Brazil '66, with Astrud Gilberto, etc.. ALL (I would fervently hope) of the Joe & Eddie albums... would be a reasonable start on heaven, and of course, the rest of the original We Five - I have a We Five album apparently released later without Beverly Bevens (I thought it was Bivens, as in a "Bivens' action" - civil rights suit based on "deliberate indifference.") Seriously, if anyone knows abt some of these other albums in CD format, I hope they post it.

Well, Joe covered the We Five aspect way better than I possibly could have, but I will add some Sylvia Fricker Tyson stuff. This was reportedly the first song she ever wrote, and it first appeared on the third Ian and Sylvia album,Northern Journey in 1964, the first album after their marriage. A live recording in 1965, a folk/ROCK version in 1970, and a solo recording in 1989 may not be the complete discography, but it is probably close.

From the liner notes of Live At Newport: She said, "I wrote it in New York at the Earl Hotel where we were staying. Its influence came from gospel stuff I was listening to all the time." In 1965 it was covered by the California pop/folk group, We Five, who took it to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Live At Newport Ian & Sylvia, Vanguard 77020, 1996. (from The Newport Folk Festival, 1963 and 1965, mostly previously unreleased)

I believe We Five recorded four albums. Last year, the Collector's Choice label came out with a CD with the "You Were On My Mind" and "Make Someone Happy" albums. It's available from Collector's Choice [phone], or from cdnow.com (there's also a great double album from the Pozo-Seco Singers, for those of us who like the easy-listening variety of "folk rock").
Oy, the things I do for you, Shula - I had to get out a magnifying glass to read the album notes. Members of the group were Jerry Burgan, Bob Jones, Pete Fullerton, Beverly Bevens, and Mike Stewart (I think I heard he was the brother of John Stewart of the Kingston Trio). Three of the four males went to the University of San Francisco, and 3 of 4 butnothesame males went to Mt. San Antonio College in Los Angeles County. And Beverly Bevens just went to a junior college in Orange County, but she had a fabulous voice. And they were never heard from again, except for their one song that gets played on oldies stations occasionally. I really like their two albums, and I hope the other two get reissued.

Remember this sung by a one-album-wonder group called The We Five, featuring a fantastic alto (and only) female lead singer. Anybody know more? Did this woman drop off the planet? Did she ever record anything else? And who the dickens WAS she? (Lord, how I loathe having a failing memory!)
