Some good news today:

Web Millionaire Buys Aryan Compound The Associated Press Mar 7 2001 11:02AM

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - An Internet millionaire has paid $250,000 for the Aryan Nations' former compound in northern Idaho and plans to turn it into an educational center for human rights issues. Greg Carr, founder and former chairman of the Internet service Prodigy, bought the 20-acre compound near Hayden Lake from a mother and son who were awarded it after winning a lawsuit against the white separatist group.

``The days of the Aryan Nations using this facility as a national headquarters for promoting religious- and race-based hatred and violence are over,'' Carr said in a statement Wednesday issued by The Carr Foundation.

Victoria Keenan and her son, Jason, were chased, shot at and terrorized by Aryan Nations security guards in 1998. Last year, they won a $6.3 million lawsuit against Aryan Nations founder Richard Butler and his organization, bankrupting the group.

The Keenans obtained the title to the property last month at a bankruptcy court auction and announced their wish to sell it to a group promoting human rights.

The compound contains numerous buildings, including Butler's home, a bunkhouse, a guard tower and the chapel of Butler's church.

Carr said Butler's church will be turned into a museum displaying ``the artifacts of hatred left behind by the Aryan Nations.'' The remaining buildings will be razed and replaced with a classroom featuring the history and message of the human rights movement.

Gov. Dirk Kempthorne said transforming the compound into a human rights center ``continues to send the clearest of signals of what Idaho is truly about.''

Carr, a 41-year-old Idaho native, paid for the property from his personal foundation at Harvard University. In 1999, Carr pledged $500,000 to the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial in Boise and last summer donated another $500,000 to the Idaho Human Rights Education Center.

``Courageous people in northern Idaho have protested against Butler's message for 20 years,'' Carr said.

Butler remains in the area. Vincent Bertollini, a former Silicon Valley millionaire investor and one of Butler's biggest supporters, bought a small bungalow for Butler not far from the old compound.

This is just the kind of news I needed today!!! The school I teach at (about 1 hour from Santee, CA) had a lockdown today because a 12 year old (who is affliliated with the local skinheads) told some classmates that he was going to shoot people today. Some of these kids get such slanted messages at home, and in their neighborhoods that it is hard for us to make a dent. We keep trying, but we only have them for a few hours a day. We can only offer them guidance. When the gang is offering them drugs, indoctrination and someone to blame for their place in the world, I am afraid to many of them take the bait. Too many kids are the "artifacts of hate" left behind by the Aryan Nation and their ilk.

Let's drive them all out of business. Let's fight their evil with truth and love. Let's look forward to the day when their message falls on deaf ears.

Oh, Susan, I am glad you are alright! I agree with you, wholeheartedly, on an emotional level.

In our human rights organisation, we work on making anyone feel welcome and included, as some think it is a perceived ostracism which feeds on the fear and paranoia those groups rely on. It is believed that by trying to talk with them, we can hopefullly reach a common ground through education about diversity, etc. I confess, though, I have never been very successful at engaging anyone of that ilk in conversation; it makes me very uncomfortable. When we went through training for holding meetings in *hostile* areas, it scared the bejaysus out of me to know they might turn up to stand at the back of the room, hands on their holsters, trying to intimidate us. That actually happened to a very brave young woman I am proud to call my friend when she traveled the Northwest to hold such meetings. It was in a small town in Montana.

There are incredibly brave people like her who are doing so much work towards that, including Morris Dees, whom Spaw mentioned. My friend I mentioned, who is lesbian, and her colleague, an American of African descent, with dreadlocks, have been so courageoous, they've even gone to white supremacists' "trade shows" to gather information.

So, I guess I am saying that, emotionally, I'd like to see them all run out of every town; logically, I know that isn't going to happen and I hope we can find a way to work with them to let go of their fear which breeds such hatred and violence.

Many long years ago I had relatives in two towns in Idaho, and since early vists to them I've gone through sight seeing and staying a few days in many places north, south east, west, and center. It's almost everywhere a beautiful place with only very nice people as far as I knew. I count myself very lucky I didn't run into those few others bent on hatred. They weren't the real people of Idaho.

Living in the middle of many - err colored folk, I know just how many 'white' people feel on this one.

The posters from the UK clearly have NO idea what such conditions can do to an otherwise sane kind and sensible white person. Being hated for your color is not a nice feeling.

Miss/Mrs Keenan, yeah the whole darned world falls over for what?

She went up there looking for MONEY and she got it too. Shame on the Judge and Jury!

Mr Carr. Course now if you break down in Idaho and need a place to rest up while you fix that car etc DONT park in Corpo Complex. They will call 'security'

Mr Butler may be unpopular but at least he his trying to fight back against the hatred of white people in the United States of America.

Some reasons MR Butler gets attention. Los Angeles is a foreign land more like Buenos Aires than Kansas, in fact the entire 'strip' in Ca is mostly Mexican, Chinese etc.

Well, gee. I guess I'm just sheltered. Oddly enough, I'm white, have lived in Los Angeles, Orange County and Long Beach most of my life, and the ONLY time I've ever been physically threatened has been by (insert irony detector!) an Orange County white supremecist gang. This is after living in Garden Grove, right in the middle of the Vietnamese/AsianBoyz gangwar. After living in Long Beach during the LA riots. After... shit... too many things.

Do you know what it is, oh unnamed "be afraid of them, they're DIFFERENT *GASP*!!!!" Guest? It's humanity out there. You can either be a reactionary jerk and claim that only 'your kind' are safe to be around, or you can find that people are in fact, well... people. And pretty much the only universal law is that what you put out, you get back. You put out mistrust, fear and hatred, guess what you're going to get back? You put out friendship and general happiness? You'd be amazed at how fast little white worlds get turned into wider worlds of humanity.

Sheesh. "Los Angeles is a foreign land more like Buenos Aires than Kansas, in fact the entire 'strip' in Ca is mostly Mexican, Chinese etc.". Get a fucking clue. Nothing is more 'foreign' and 'UnAmerican' than that kind of crap.

Great news! No chance for racism everywhere!

While here in Germany the number of criminal acts related to racism, antisemitism and hatred against foreigners have increased dramatically in the past years, I am very glad to hear that somewhere a punch against this ugly monstre has found its goal.

But remember: racism is a hydra with many, many heads. Never stop fighting it. And this starts at your own doorstep, in your own town, with your own neighbors.

Personnally, after ten years of social work I tend to make very cynic jokes about my clients, who come mostly from turkey and the balkanese countries. But once in a while I feel very ashamed for it, because this is where it starts!

Good points Rollo. Often we become somewhat jaded in things we do and even the most innocent of jokes can send a message totally out of character for ourselves and make the more impressionable begin to wonder.

I am stretching my son's lack of exposure to the real world a bit and I think its justified. Michael just doesn't see differences and with any luck and a little caution, by the time he hears and sees the bigotry and racism still so prevalent, he will have no problem understanding that those attitudes are wrong and make no sense. That's not to say he isn't exposed, but at this point, color/appearance/disability make no difference to him. This is helped by having a brother who is MRDD and exposure to a wide variety of differences over the years we fostered. The best thing is that I am sure (because he does things this way) that when it becomes an issue, he'll ask Dad and Mom why before listening to anyone else.

Good for you, Spaw. Because our youngest went to primary school in a very diverse cultural area, it wasn't until high school out here that she heard the word "chink" and she did come to me to ask about it; she didn't know what it meant, but could tell from the way it was said that it was prejudice.

It has to start at home. Of course, being the genius in art that he is, Michael is always going to see the world differently than most, anyway, ya know?

The best way to defuse hatred is not to hate back. That feeds the cycle. The best way is to break open the cycle. Come to think of it, didn't some longhair about 2000 years ago say something like that? Love your enemies and all that?

It's still worth trying, IMHO.

Senator Byrd has long been held up as an Democrat icon in the Senate. I just thought you proud Democrats should see your hero as he really is.

"Senator Byrd filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and he opposed the nominations of Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, but his bigotry didn't end there. Author Graham Smith, cited in Michele Malkin's column, recently discovered another letter Senator Byrd wrote after he supposedly quit the Klan, this time attacking desegregation of the armed forces.

"The ex-Klansman," Malkin writes, "vowed never to fight 'with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.'"

Michelle Malkin sums up her column this way: "If this ex-Klansman were a conservative Republican, he would never hear the end of his sordid past. 'Ex-Klansman who opposed civil rights and black justices...' would appear in every reference to Senator Byrd. And even the 'ex-' would be in doubt...left-wing bloodhounds who sniff racism in every crevice of American life would be barking up a storm over Senator Byrd's latest fulminations

Do you really think that because I am a liberal, I can't believe that members of the Democratic Party of the USA (of which I am not now nor have ever been a member) are incapable of being racist, or having any other vice?

Actually we can shorten that question: Do you really think?

Attaching representation of a large class to one hypocritical individual is about as logical as refusing to have anything to do with any animals anywhere because your uncle's third cousin got snakebit back in ought-six. Whatever happened to looking and seeing for yourself and judging from facts rather than fallacies?

I live in Coeur d' Alene, Id and it is quite a relief to see the compound turned into something useful for a change. I'm tired of northern idaho being percieved as a racsist community. In reality, I've seen three Skin heads after living in CDA for the past six years. They were all at the parking of a Mcdonalds, then got in the California state cars and drove away. The problem is not the Idahoans, Aryan people come to our area from California, Oregon, Montana, all over. They are a problem, but other than send racial pamphlets and have their occasional parade, they're really not in the town spotlight. Their last parade wasn't allowed to march through downtown, instead they had a new parade route right by the town landfill. We residents were quite happy with the new route. I'm just happy to see that the compound is no more. Thanks for making mention of the fact on this site!!

Maybe now when I tell people I'm from CDA they won't ask if I'm a Nazi! I can tell you that gets old considering I've seen like 4 skinheads ever. I'm probably still going to get the old 'isn't Idaho the code name of a gigantic nuclear landfill??'

Actually the code name for the gigantic nuclear landfill is INEEL in southern Idaho.

When Cecil Andrus was Governor,he placed state troopers at the state lines to stop Dept of Energy shipments of nuclear waste from Rocky Flats from coming in.When Phil Batt became governor he allowed the shipments in.

When friends asked me about the Nazis up here,I pointed out that the compound was a good place for them.Everyone knew where they were at and it actually was like a mini prison with its fence and razor ribbon.

Unfortunately the idiots would come out at times.

The latest is that the Aryan Nations are planning on carrying loaded weapons for their July 7 parade in Couer d'Alene. They say if the Veterans groups are going to be armed, they should have that right also.
