I know there's been a thread on this song before:

In a shady nook one moonlit night
A leprechaun I spied...

but the Supersearch isn't working or something's wrong with my computer! I want to teach this song in two hours to my first graders- can you help me?

THE LEPRECHAUN
by

Robert Dwyer Joyce (1830-83)

In a shady nook one moonlit night,
A leprahaun I spied
In scarlet coat and cap of green,
A cruiskeen by his side.
'Twas tick, tack, tick, his hammer went,
Upon a weeny shoe,
And I laughed to think of a purse of gold,
But the fairy was laughing too.

With tip-toe step and beating heart,
Quite softly I drew night.
There was mischief in his merry face,
A twinkle in his eye;
He hammered and sang with tiny voice,
And sipped the mountain dew;
Oh! I laughed to think he was caught at last,
But the fairy was laughing, too.

As quick as thought I grasped the elf,
"Your fairy purse," I cried,
"My purse?" said he, "'tis in her hand,
That lady by your side."
I turned to look, the elf was off,
And what was I to do?
Oh! I laughed to think what a fool I'd been,
And, the fairy was laughing too.

Alison that was WONDERFUL! A million thanks!
After I posted I went right to work teaching the older kids, but I checked the 'cat again as the first graders were lined up outside the door; pressed "print" and away I went.
It's not a song I expect them to be able to sing by heart, but they loved the story. I confess I changed "cruiskeen" to "bottle"!
I then told them how I got the words to the song and where you are and they wanted to know: What time was it when you answered, and what's the weather like?

This is wonderful! Thank you! And just in time, too. There'll be many a leprechaun trap in first grade this next week. What is the tune?

See also  Lyrics to "The Leprechaun"  and  The fairy was laughing....  Alice Flynn has the music, and at one time put the staff notation on her website.  I made a midi of the melody at the time, and will in due course (if I don't forget) send it to Alan for the Mudcat Midi Pages.  Meanwhile, as a temporary measure, I have put it on the  South Riding Folk Network  website:  Click here to play The Leprechaun
