Spaw was jest kiddin', making the "assumption" that A&E had picked him as the number one most important person of the past 1000 years. My reply is in reference to the person they did actually pick, crediting Spaw with the invention of movable type -- the printing press.

OK. I admit it. I am lost. What for Spaw ? Please forgive my ignorance. I just joined up a short bit ago and I'm also pretty ignorant about folk and blues, being from the a little place called Three Miles In Back Of Beyond, Kent County, New Brunswick, CAN. If you don't know where that is, it's about ten miles from East Overshoe, as the crow flies.

Message for Tiger-- I'm glad somebody knew who Billy Murray was. . .a long time ago I asked in the Forum if anybody knew anything about Harry C. Browne, banjo player who used to record with the Peerless Quartette (yes, that spelling) and there were NO answers. Now you refer to the P.Q. so you must know something! Can you help me learn more about Harry C. Browne?
PS: Thanks Dick: performer rather than author, but I don't think that's right for Woody; whose recording of This Land is heard most often? (I don't know! I first heard it on a Weavers record)

I find some of Woody's songs quite timeless. "This Land is Your Land" is obvious, but, just because a song has historic context ("So Long, It's Been Good to Know Ya") wouldn't disqualify its timelessness in my book. 'Course, that's just my book. Hoagy wrote a lot of love songs -- I guess those are timeless by definition, but they generally don't appeal to moi.

Spaw speaks of the crazy lists people come up with. Reminds me of the "100 Most Important People" of the past 1000 years A&E came up with. Oh well, at least they got #1 right. (IMHO)

Actually, these are easy: Bill Monroe, Doc, and...well, this is a little harder...I'll go with Hoagy Carmichael -- Dylan and Woody were "of their time", but Hoagy wrote much more complex, timeless tunes.

Well, if the Righteous Brothers are on anyone's top-anything list, the list is highly suspect. These guys were a burlesque of soul music. They liked to brag that black DJs played them thinking they were black performers -- except that no soul singer in his or her right mind would sing like that.

Billy Murray was a singer in the early days of the 78 record. Appeared mostly on Victor scroll. Almost any of the old songs - he done 'em. For example, his "K-K-K-Katy" was the popular version.

Often sang duets with Ada Jones.

He was also part of some of the early quartets, etc. Over time he appeared with the Peerless Quartette, American Quartette, Sterling Trio, probably several others.

One of my favorites, as I collect music of the period.

I'm not sure if Woody coming third is a "good thing" or not. A while ago I met a couple of girls singing "This Land" and asked them if they know who wrote it. No, we got it from a book. Do you know the other two verses. No. Do you know what the song's really about. No. People consider it some kind of national anthem rather than a song of protest. I'm sure if the "shadow of the steeple" and the "private property" verses were well know it woould not have passed into kids' song books and would never have made it. A good thing too??Dr John

Hi Spaw, Yes, but Irving Berlin has two songs on the list (both holiday songs) and Woody only has one. Sometimes I sing This Land with Woody's original tag (the one he crossed out) "God blessed America for me"

Karen heard this list on the way home and was impressed that "American Pie" came in 5th.

For me, I find it interesting that "God Bless America" came in 19th and the song that it inspired Woody to write, "This Land Is Your Land," as a protest to 'God Bless America' came in 3rd!

I'm glad Take me Out to the Ball Game is there but isn't that a Von Tilzer song? There seems to me no pattern to the crediting of the song; e.g., White Christmas is attributed to Crosby, not Irving Berlin, yet This Land is credited to Woody, and the Entertainer (not Maple Leaf?) to Scott Joplin. I never heard of Billy Murray; could somebody enlighten me?

Judy Garland wins but Woody is at 3 and Louis and Fats get in there plus the Duke. Strange West Side Story get in there rather than a particular song. Story follows:
