Bless Yourselves 'Catters, for I have sinned.

(1)I once bought a round of drink for a bagpipe band. (2)I once bought a Bee Gee's LP. (3) I once told Patrick Kavanagh - the wondrous poet who wrote the qunintessential love song "The Dawning Of The Day" - that in my considered opinion he was a grumpy old bastard who knew f..k all and that he should take himself back to the obscurity of Co. Monaghan where he belonged.

Oh dear, oh, dear, oh dear....

Any advance on that? M

Admitting you have made mistakes in your life is the first step.

Admitting you will make mistakes again in your life is the second step.

Admitting your mistakes to others who would otherwise not have known or cared is another mistake.

Ickle, I did the same at a Neil Diamond concert. Worse than that, in another thread I recently made diparaging remarks about Pete Seeger's lyric writing abilities.

Oh, where shall I turn for forgiveness if not unto you?

Well....ok... I once stood in front of my living room window on crutches and waved at my neighbours while they were shovelling their driveway, even though I could actually get around the house ( and maybe even shovel snow ) sloooowly, without too much pain if I didn't use the crutches, in hopes that they would shovel my.... wait, I hear scraping.... excellent, it worked !

I once substituted a Bb9 chord in place of a straight F chord in a trad tune, and was promptly reprimanded by the listener.

For a long time I refused to mute the bass strings on my guitar (for that Doc sound) feeling that for what I spent on my rosewood guitar, the guitar should be allowed to sustain and ring out. I was told by a famous and notable player that my attitude was the most assinine thing he'd ever heard of. I decided that HIS attitude was more assinine than mine (but I did learn the technique.)

It is, IMO, perfectly all right to like Rise Up Singing, provided only that you don't do any of the following:

1) Put any credence in the chord sequences they supply.

2) Modify lyrics for greater political correctness in accordance with their modifications.

3) Attend a song circle with your face in it, and bitch and moan if anyone starts a song that isn't in it.

Unfortunately, all of the above errors are widespread.

Peter.

I didn't know who Patrick Sky was until Kendall and Spaw introduced me to him.

I still don't know who Patrick Kavanagh is, but if chordstrangler says he is a grumpy ol' bastard who knows "f**k all, it must be true. Were you sober when you said that, CS?

SINSULL, I have to confess that I wasn't. Not only was I not sober but I was totally confused and young and foolish and a cub reporter on a job I wasn't up to.....need I say more.

But if you don't know who Patrick Kavanagh is and was, then, please listen to me when I say that he is worth looking up.

A contrary old bastard he was, but he wrote a love song to thrash all love songs. The Dawning of the Day is so special that it would almost make you believe in God. It is that good - in my humble opinion. M

Hi, I once drove Jerry Jeff Walker out of a music store in Austin by playing too loud (acoustically).

You are right, Chordstrangler, Raglan Road is the quintessential love song. The tune to it, "Dawning of the Day" is an old pipe march, also used for the Irish music hall song, "William Bloat", talk about ridiculous to sublime!

I married a cop. My Dad threw Reba McIntyre and Roger Miller off their own stages. I listen to Vivaldi. My husband plays the bodhran. I encourage him. My daughter listens to Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. I eat meat, smoke and drink. My piano has several "layers" of messages written in the dust. My girl dog likes to eat carpet so I have several holes in it. I'm a Research Addict who likes proving I can find it, so I spend way to much time on Mudcat.

Mea Culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa. I forgot to mention that I didn't go to Woodstock 1, and I didn't even want to go.......

The fans of Sydney Devine are just normal people, however it's whipered in social circles.

Some people think that Sydney Devine fans should be locked up and then thrown away the key.

I play the Brodhan, and I'm learing the accordion and I'm saving up for a banjo.

I must be off my head, to all the people who I've insulted all I can say is sorry.

And I'll try and not do it again, which for me is sometimes hard, because I write things before I think about them if you see what I mean.

I write before I think.

Hi Callie. My post was (sort of) a joke. Someone mentioned a Bb9th chord, which is kinda jazzy. The song I was referring to (Nitelife) has a pattern that goes C, C9, F, Bb9..... I drop the high F (the fifth in a Bb) to an E (open string). To some that's more than "jazzy" it's downright disonent!

Sorcha. I want to marry you and have your children! You have so many wonderful bad habits.

OK, I've been holding off on this, but I figure the Mudcat is the best place to get this off my chest.

What I'm about to confess, I have never told anyone before in my life.
In 1968, I sob...sob... sob, actually voted for Richard Milhous Nixon.

There, I've said it, but I don't feel any better about it.

I feel there were mitigating factors. I was in Viet Nam, Booby had just been shot, and I was pretty disallussioned with everything.I was filling out my absentee ballot, and there was nobody left to vote for, but I was going to vote ,by God.

When I got back, I got Orson Welles record "The Begatting of the President" (I still have it) and smoked a lot of dope while I listened to it.

Please forgive me.

Callie, I can understand about ELO Part 2, they were nothing next to the real thing. But they did have like 2 good songs. BTW Jeff Lynne has got back with Richard Tandy, as well as George Harrison, and cellist Suzi Katayami (who's also played with the Cheiftains) and are releasing the 1st ELO album in 15 years. It's coming out next month, and it's called Zoom.

I once thought "Billy Jack" was a profoundly moving, deeply significant film...a great statement concerning injustice in our times.

I was very young. Forgive me.

I made no such mistake with its sequels.

Oddly enough, I got to know some of the people who played bit parts in it a few years later, when I stayed at Rolling Thunder's camp in Nevada. They even had a truck there that Tom Laughlin gave them, with the Billy Jack hat logo on its doors.

But it was still a wretched movie. It's message: there's only one way that peaceful, gentle people can fight mindless violence and prejudice. By getting a martial arts expert to kick the shit out of their persecutors, and shoot a few of the worst ones, and feel totally self-righteous while doing it, too. Hmmmm...come to think of it, this is the premise of a great many Clint Eastwood films over the years, isn't it?

So go ahead. Make my day. Please? Somebody? I have this need to kill something and feel good about it...

Richard Thompson is pretty cool, but then again I only have the Hand Of Kindness album. Now who I REALLY can't understand is Jethro Tull. I've probably listened to a more varied array of rock groups, and I still can't see why folks seem to think they're so wonderful. They sound pretty much like a regular 70's rock band. I think most of their fans like them because they're pagan and there aren't many pagan rock bands out there. Or something.

Matt R - perhaps you could avail yourself of a friend who might have about twenty or more and have a listen. I don't mean to sound trite, but I have always found that I can usually gain at least some appreciation for most tunes if I listen to them five times without attempting to judge them. Of course, some tunes are just plain crap - I have my predjudices too.

In any case, perhaps you have listened to Tull at length and decided they are not for you. As for me, I can't get enough, although some of their tunes suck big time.

Firstly, Kim C: You haven't LIVED until you've had Garlic mayo on you french fries. I wasn't too keen on the mayo/fries thing 'til I tried this. Just once in a while, or you'll get sick of it.

Burke: Nutella is this jar of hazlenut chocolate spread. You han either have it runny on bread/dip stuff into it OR you can leave it in the 'fridge and eat chunks of it. It's a clinically recognized (yeahrright!) cure for PMT/PMS. What's even cooler is that the jar is like a decorative glass, so when you've finished, you can wash it and use it as a glass. Dearest Matt - make sure the two Tull albums you own are Heavy Horses and Songs From the Wood - they're fantastic. On the subject of sin I won't slate your liking for Oasis, as I think I saw you slip a Gomez quote in on another thread and I love Gomez.

Mickey/chordstrangler's right about Patrick Kavanagh being a grumpy auld shite (what was the esteemed poet's reaction?), and there's nothing to be ashamed of with the bagpipe band - I have family members who play the bagpipes. He's not absolved from the BeeGee album though.

I like Neil Diamond, although I've never seen him in concert like Allan C. I especially like Cracklin' Rose.

My worst sin? I own a guitar and can't play it, though I strumm it ineffectually every couple of days, and I will go to lessons, but these days I'm out of the country more often than in.

For winter, what about PEA soup, like grandma made. Ham, lentils, veg and I don't know what. It STINKS while it's cooking, but it tastes amazing, and it keeps you warm. That's where the phrase 'It's a real pea-souper' (to describe thick fog) comes from. For years, when we were kids, my friend thought it was called PEACE soup, 'cos her nan told her that they ate it during the war!!!!

Fib, I have the Tull albums Heavy Horses and Benefit. Still can't get into them. Which is usually saying something to be, since I usually love everything the 1st time I hear it. In the last 2 weeks, I've bought 5 albums by groups that I either know one song, or nothing, that they sing. And I've loved them all.

Oasis holds a special place in my heart, since I pretty much "hated" any kind of rock & roll, until my younger sister played "Champagne Supernova" for me. And that's when I started to delve into rock. I knew if one song could convert a strictly country/classical/musicals guy into a rock lover, that they MUST be special. And they've only gotten better with time. Noel's new beautiful unreleased outtakes from Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants are excellent...they show a real maturity. And you can't appreciate what a nice voice Noel has until you hear him sing "This Guy's In Love With You". Absolutely heartbreaking.

And yes, I'm a Gomez junkie, and I've only had Bring It On since last Wednesday!!! I'm gonna pick up Abandoned Trolley Shopping Line coupled with the Machismo EP. I love 'Shitbag 9'.

Today I got Parklife by Blur and picked up the "Turn" single by Travis, the one that has the acoustic cover of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time" from VH1 Storytellers.

Check out my Gomez plug on "non-folk CDs" thread!

Gonna leave this planet, gonna head out the galaxy! GET MILES!

Matt R... said by someone else above, I forget who, try Tull's "Songs From the Wood". Tremendous mixture of minstrel, folk, orchestral.

Anyway, if you don't like Tull, you don't. I personnaly don't get overly turned on by Baptist hymns, but, other than that, I enjoy just about everything I've heard so far, with some give and take. Of course, Rap doesn't count because most of it is just poorly written poetry.

On the Blur subject, no. I only have Parklife, Blur, and Blur: The Best Of. Strange, it's general knowledge that Modern Life Is Rubbish. Is the most uninteresting Blur album. The only single released from it, was "Chemical World" I believe, and didn't make it to the 18-track best of, so I don't think the band thinks much of the album. My next snag? Either The Great Escape or 13.

Matt, from Modern Life is Rubbish, they released 'For Tomorrow' (strings!)and 'Sunday Sunday'. Blur are on a different vibe at the mo', so they're not likely to put stuff like that on the Best Of CD, it doesn't fit well with the William Orbit crowd. Don't listen to 'general knowledge', it only reflects the current trend of whatever media whore is writing reviews at that time. Modern Life is Rubbish has the most feeling, the most music, and if we're talking as people who like folk, then surely that's what matters. Have another listen and tell me what YOU think.

On a lighter note, it's nice to find a folk fan who likes a bit of 90's indie, too.

Tigger, I took a look at another site that claims that Modern Life is the first album Blur did of REAL music content. Maybe I was reading the wrong reviews! And you know what, one of the songs DID make it on the greatest hits, "For Tomorrow" --the extended remix, with the funny little poem-like intinerary at the end.

Peanut soup. After trying three different recipes, here's what I do now. Take about a cup of peanut butter and put it in your Crock Pot with a couple cans of chicken broth and a little milk (or cream if you want it really thick), mix it all up, let it cook on low all day while you're at work. Marvelous. It's also good with chunky veggies in it like celery, carrots, and onions. You could even put chicken in it if you like. Some folks like to serve it with chopped peanuts on top.

A lot of people think peanuts and chicken don't go together... but... how many of you have eaten peanut chicken at an Asian restaurant? Also Mister had a friend years ago that used to make a West African dish with chicken and peanut butter. Nowadays we tend to think of peanuts and peanut products in terms of sweets and candy, but really, a peanut is a legume, like beans and peas, and is really versatile. Some say it goes well with mayonnaise. ;-)

I have made pea soup before, too. Mmmmmmmmmm. Me and my Crock Pot, well, we're damn nigh inseparable for the winter months.

I once got very drunk, staggered on stage and gave an impromptu rendition of Johnny Standley's Its In The Book, complete with the song Grandma's Lyesoap, to a gathering, incredulous small audience. To make matters worse, I tried it again about 25 or 30 years later with a group of friends out in the wilderness, with more or less the same response.

I still am uncertain why I did it in the first place, let alone twice.

I had a few hoots one night at a club gig and decided that it would be a good time to impress an audience with my abilities on the 12-string guitar, an instrument I had just acquired and had no idea how to play. I was told later that I spent a half hour tuning the instrument while telling jokes. The audience was in stitches, but eventually someone brought me my 6-string and took the 12-string away from me. My gawd, the things we do at times.

In 1842-1843 British forces under General Charles Napier conquered Sindh. It is said that he sent back to the Governor General a one-word message, "Peccavi" – Latin for "I have sinned". In actual fact, this pun first appeared as a cartoon in Punch magazine.

Down by the river that flows by the coal yards.
Stands wooden houses with shutters torn down
There lives a girl everybody calls Patches
Patches my darling of Old Shanty town

We plan to marry when June brought the summer
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride
Now I don't see how that ever can happen
My folks say No, and my heart breaks inside

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
But a girl from that place would just bring me disgrace
So my folks won't let me love you

Each night I cry as I think of that shanty
And pretty Patches there watching the door
She doesn't know that I can't come to see her
Patches must think that I love her no more

I hear a neighbor tellin my father
He said a girl name of Patches was found
Floating face down in that dirty old river
That flows by the coal yards in Old Shanty Town

Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
It may not be right But I'll join you tonight
Patches I'm coming to you

When I was younger I occasionally voted for Republican Candidates. I voted for John Anderson in the 1980 elecetion. I bought my sister a bodhran for her 40th birthday, thereby causing her to take bodhran classes at the Chicago New School of Folk Music. I have just purchased a drum that seems to be a cross between a bodhran and a rain stick, which I plan on giving her on her next birthday.
And I like Jacobite songs.
