Krassen set about correcting what he thought of as the mistakes in O'Neill's Dance Music Of Ireland, 1001 Gems, he didn't improve it.

I've got both the Krassen and a reprint of the O'Neill book (yellow paperback, green printing). I have another copy that I'd put in the auction if I could find it. The O'Neill, not Krassen book is available for sale at the Mel Bay site here.

There's also The O'Neill Project. All the tunes were put into ABC format and are available here.

Our viola player lifted my copy a few weeks ago. God alone when I'll see it again, as she is completely taken with it. (I may have to get into the bidding just to get her her own copy.) However, we now have a sudden influx of jigs, reels and hornpipes being inserted willy-nilly into our repertoire. Kinda fun, as she just takes off at the end of something else and we (the keyboardist and I) give each other an oh-gawd-here-we-go look and leap in behind her. Challenging, to say the least.

I consider all those grace notes to be entirely optional.

I don't know, accurate reprints surfice for scholars, and book collectors look for fine bindings, and it's amazing how much the original dust jacket adds onto the price.

My copy of the reprint of O'Neill's 'Irish music and Musicians' is hiding at present. However, there's a modern preface by an eminant folklorist that gives a good history of all of O'Neill's (except some first editions, presuming they every existed, and there are works where there was only an imaginary 1st edition). We are also informed that O'Neill's manuscripts are in a special collection at Notre Dame U. I've looked everywhere I can think of, but haven't been able to find the books O'Neill said (in scattered places) he had. None that I new about turned up in the National Union Catalog, but that only included what were known as repository libraries (many fabulous collections can't be found in that) . O'Neill had some volumes of Aird's 'Airs', of which I got a xerox of a page from vol. III (where "Pretty Peggy of Darby O" was identified as Irish, but not elsewhere) from the Forbes Library, who had the only known copies in the USA. When I got to the Forbes Lib. a year later to get a contents list and copy some tunes from them I found that they had sold them to a bookseller (Lubrano on the web) and I don't know where they went.

I hope you won't consider this inappropriate, but a friend of mine (honestly)has an original copy of the 1903 Music of Ireland, albeit the cover is in bad shape; is it worth much?

John, yes this is the Krassen, the one with the pinkish cover and knot work on it. Mel Bay has published a fascimile edition of O'Neills Music of Ireland. It's $29.95, and the stock number is MB96322. You should be able to find it at www.melbay.com

It has "Airs/Songs, O'Carolan Compositions, Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Long Dances, and Marches & Miscellaenous" 1,850 Melodies. I bought it last fall at Winfield, so I am selling my Krassen.

Yes, he edited and took out a lot of tunes, Airs esp, but the tunes that he left in do not play substanially differently from the original O'Neills. I know, because I have compared lots of specific tunes.

I've just visited Dave Mallinson's site and see he has 2 O'Neils, one of which is "Krassened", on sale. I have a feeling I have seen at least one other on offer somewhere - possibly Hobgoblin.

I have the Krassen version somewhere but it is no use to me. At best, I use music to learn something I have heard and want to learn and look for "skeleton tunes". Krassen seems to have gone beserk with ornamentation for fiddle in his version. I guess what I don't like about it could actually make it good for someone else though.

O'Neill's first publication was "The Music of Ireland," 1903, but he also published "Dance Music of Ireland," in 1907. Two other, apparently lesser tune books, at unknown (to me) dates, were "Irish Music," and "Waifs and Strays of Irish Melody."
"O'Neill's Tunebook" was ambiguous enough to make me notice, since I have been considering a search for his other tunes. His two books, "Irish Folk Music: A Fascinating Hobby" in 1910 and "Irish Minstrels and Musicians" in 1913 have also been recommended to me.

Since I have the Miles Krassen / Oak Publications "O'Neill's Music of Ireland," I assume this is the one for sale, and unfortunately I don't need another.

Does anyone know if any of these others have been republished, or if an original (unKrassened) "The Music of Ireland" can be found?

Krassen revised the tunes, so they're Krassen's, not O'Neill's.
