Subject: Seán Tyrrell tonight
From: DebC
Date: 26 Jul 00 - 02:13 PM

Sorry for the late notice, but since some of our usual announcers are not available, I have taken it upon myself to let you all know that Galway-born troubador Seán Tyrrell will be a guest of the Boston Folk & Traditional Singer's Club at Paddy Burke's, 132 Portland St. (by the Fleet Center and North Station) in Boston. Singing starts at 9 pm, and the price is $7 non-members and $1-members. There is open floor singing before and after the guest slot, so come on down and hear some great singing.

The Toledo Folk Club (Frank & Nancy)hosted a concert Friday evening at the local Methodist Church. We had a local old time fiddle group open, fiddle, guitar and banjo; and our main act was Sean Tyrrell & Tommy Peoples. It was one the finest concerts we have had in a long time. Sean plays tenor guitar and mandocello and sings in a wonderfully warm irish tenor, and of course most people know the famous fiddling of Tommy. If you've never heard Sean Tyrell, you're in for a marvelous experience. His latest CD is called "The Orchard" Wish I could share his music right here & now with you all. A night I'll remember for a long time...... Frank and Nancy of Toledo, Oregon

We heard Mr. Tirrell a couple months ago in Cumberland, R.I. Wonderful show. Near brought the house down with "Sweet Ballyvaughn."
To anyone in Rhode Island, Southeastern Mass., or northeast Conn., he'll be at Blackstone River Theater, Broad Street, Cumberland, R.I. on March 23. Tirrell will perform following a presentation of Faint Voices, a one-act play about the Irish poet Francis Ledwidge, which will start about 8.
The theater's got a website, but I don't do blue clickies.

He put out an album, in conjunction with some European musicians on Francis Ledwidge, called "Songs of Peace". Wish I could be there. I am in Oregon now, but was raised in Jamestown, Rhode Island.........

Sean and Tomy are also playing the Burren later this month. Sadly I will be in Florida; but having heard Sean sing for a tiny little audience (he agreed to do a last-minute spot for the singers' club in Boston), I can live off that high for some time yet!

A wonderful, wonderful songwriter and singer. Dark Horse of the Wind...wow.

I took Sean's version of "12th of July" from the Cry of the Dreamer CD and coupled it with the poem about "Generations of Vision" and it is a show stopper. If you have not heard his version of this and pondered this old poem by John Frazier, then you need to. And he also sang a version of "The Walker of the Snow" on a Davy Spillane album. The combination of Spillane on the Low Whistle and Uillean Pipes, and Sean Tyrell's mystical voice is absolutely stunning and haunting as well. I admire this artist immensely and my fondest wish would be to meet him and hear him sing live. He is a very strong influence on my music selections, and my singing style. Listen to the cuts I just described and you will know why.

All the best,

Big Mick

Yes, Sean Tyrrell possesses one of the truly unique voices in Ireland today. I'm delighted to read the comments above re: 'Cry of A Dreamer' and his 'The Walker of the Snow' (from Davy Spillane's album 'Shadow Hunter') and know that there are people out there who still appreciate them. PJ Curtis (Producer of both the above albums)

Well, all these words of admiration made me want to hear Sean Tyrrell so I went to his website and heard some clips and am convinced I need to hear more! Unfortunately the "tour" part of the website didn't have any information in it; does anyone know where I could find out about tour dates near New York? Thanks. Margaret

Mr. Curtis, you are to be commended for your work. Spillane's work is phenomenal, to begin with. But the production of The Walker of the Snow is, in my humble opinion, a wonderful piece of work. And Cry of the Dreamer simply knocked me out. I need to point out that I became aware of this CD through The Mudcat Cafe. Thanks for your wonderful work, I will be looking for more of it.

Mick, Now I recall meeting you on the previous Sean Tyrrell thread. Thanks for the kind words re: the albums mentoned above. I first became aware of Sean's amazing talent back in the early 1980's and for 12 years I tried to get a label in Ireland interested in doing an album with him...with zero results. Then Davy Spillane and I conspired(in C.1988) to use him as a guest on 'Shadow Hunter...which say hum do two songs, 'Walker in the Snow'(the only ghost story song Ive ever produced) and 'The Host of The Air' (Sean wrote the music to the classic Yeats dream-poem esp. for the album. Sean and Tommy Peoples are still in the USA...I think they are back in S. Fran at the moment... Two living legends of Irish music. keep the faith and happy St. Pat's Day. PJ Curtis
