I have a copy of an album by a Peter Richie with the Alice's Restaurant Massacree (Complete) on one side and several tunes on the other, including Plywood Guitar.

"With her cowboys and sunsets and six plastic coats ..." or something like that. Does your son know Peter Ritchie I wonder? I can't find a digital copy of either version of Gene Autry Autographed Plywood Guitar anywhere and my turntable is not very healthy.

Thanks for reminding me of this disc. I'm gonna play it as soon as I get a working table.

Kelly

"... I have known this song nearly all my life, as Western songs were very big in the KY mountains in the thirties. After I married a New Yorker, we made our home on Long Island. When my older son was about 15, some record producer persuaded him to do a cover single of Arlo's then-new, "Alice's Restaurant." Looking for something to put on the flipside, we all started fooling around with jokey things and what came out was, "My Gene Autry Autographed Plywood Guitar," set to the tune of "When the Curtains of Night"..... Thanks for bringing back the memory of that sweet song, and of our hilarious parody.... The chorus was something like:

With her cowboys and pine trees and ten plastic coats,
She's beautifully stencilled with musical notes-
With her bright orange sunset she shines like a star,
My Gene Autry autographed plywood guitar!"

=========================================
Ah yes! Peter Ritchie Alice's Restaurant Massacree
What an awesome album! I loved "Plywood guitar" and "Pictures from Life's Other Side"

Can you help me recall some of the lyrics of the Plywood guitar verse? I remember it from when I was very young... here are some lines I remember of it:

She arrived from Sears Roebuck one dark stormy night,
I opened the package she dazzled my sight,

I sat down at once and commenced forth to play,
I learned rock of Ages before the next day,
'Be Glory' said Granny, our boy will go far,
with his wonderful newfangled plywood guitar!

It's been so long I must have misremembered the chorus... I thought it went like this:
With a cowboy and sunset and three plastic coats,
She's beautifully stencilled with musical notes-
With her bright orange sequins she shines like a star,
My Gene Autry autographed plywood guitar!

I still have the album but haven't had a record player for decades!

I miss my brain more and more.
I can't believe I forgot to include the lyrics Jim Brannigan uses on The Singing Bird:

I'LL REMEMBER YOU, LOVE, IN MY PRAYERS

When the curtains of night are drawn back by the stars

And the beautiful moon lights the sky

When the dewdrops of heaven are kissing the rose

Then my thoughts to you, Darlin' do fly
.
As if on the wings of a beautiful dove

In haste with the message it bears

Just to bring a kiss of affection and say

I'll remember you, love, in my prayers
.
When the heavenly angels are guarding the great (gate?)

As God has ordained them to do

In answer to prayers I have offered to him

I know there is one watching you
.
So may that bright spirit be with you tonight

To guide you up heaven's bright stairs

And tonight as I kneel by my bedside to pray

I'll remember you love in my prayers
.
I have loved you too fondly dear heart to forget

Those last words you whispered to me

And the kiss of affection still burns on my cheek

When you told me that true you would be
.
So go where you will, by land or by sea

I'll share all your troubles and cares

And tonight as I kneel by my bedside to pray

I'll remember you, love, in my prayers
.
-break-
.
So go where you will, by land or by sea

I'll share all your troubles and cares

And tonight as I kneel by my bedside to pray

I'll remember you, love, in my prayers

Yes, Jim Brannigan (Jim Lad) recorded a superb version of this song on his album The Singing Bird. I had not heard it before, and it brought tears to my eyes. Still does, as a matter of fact.

I remember my dad singing this song when I was child (1940's). I think Bob Wills had a popular version of it in the 1930's, not positive. My favorite is The Seldom Scene on their CD "The Way We Used To Be".

I have two recordings of it, very different but both superb, IMO:

One on Anne Hills & Cindy Mangsen's "Never Grow Old" (under the title of "Curtains of Night"), with Laurie Lewis assisting.

The other on the Seldom Scene's "Like We Used To Be" (entitled "I'll Remember You Love in My Prayers").

Yes, there are a number of versions at YouTube now, all lovely in their differences.

As far as where I first heard it, mentioned above-- it's all lost now in strokebrain, but the song remains. Hardi and I are focusing now on offertory duets and the refresh of this old thread has just put it in our workup list.

We're not much for the re-enactor thing, so I imagine the result will blend many different styles.

Thanks for that link, Nathan in Texas. What a great old version of that song, with another slightly different melody line. They use what we call a verse as a refrain, and skip some of the verses, change a few words here and there. But they made it theirs and it's nice.

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music has 2 copies of the sheet music. The first, published in 1869, has the title I'LL REMEMBER YOU IN MY PRAYERS. The second, published in 1877, has the title I'LL REMEMBER YOU, LOVE, IN MY PRAYERS. In both, words and music are attributed to Will S. Hays.

The lyrics of the 1869 version (I didn't check the 1877 version) are nearly identical to the ones WYSIWYG posted above. I found only 4 small differences:

Chorus line 1:
Go where you will, on land or at sea,

Chorus line 3:
And at night, when I kneel by my bedside and pray,

Verse 2 line 2:
The love you have spoken for me,

Verse 3 line 1:
When heavenly angels are guarding the good,

The tune may be from an older Irish waltz.
In The Fiddler's Companion: I'LL REMEMBER YOU, LOVE, IN MY PRAYERS. Irish, Waltz. D Major. Standard. AB. Miller & Perron (Irish Traditional Fiddle Music), 1977; Vol. 2, No. 10.

It's a beautiful waltz and is posted here. This same melody has been used for other folk songs, such as "The Banks of the Old Pontchartrain".

I'm wondering if the message above is correct that Priscilla Herdman recorded this song. I don't see it on her Website, but perhaps she used a different title for the song.
I heard Priscilla in concert a couple of weeks ago, and she was even better in person than she is on CD. What a lovely voice!

Hi Steve. Good to see you again! I enjoyed our correspondence; hope you and yourn are well.

It means that MMario found the sheet music at the Levy online collection at the location he gives (it's their nomenclature), and then (I think) that he has done the work necessary to convert it to a file Joe Offer can incorporate eventually into the DT database. It should result in a clickable, playable melody being in the DT with the lyric so people can hear how the tune goes. It may mean the sheet music will be there too.

Try sending MMario a PM as well to ask him for more information, or to Joe Offer. Let me know if that feature of Mudcat (PM = Personal Message) needs some explaining too. Look in the Quicklinks box on the forum page to get a start. And I will send YOU a PM so you can practice. Look on the forum page above the link that lets you Create a New Thread-- it will say you have a message, and if you click it will take you to your PMs.

This song was written by William Shakespeare Hays in 1869. I posted the lyrics and chords almost 3 years ago in a previous thread but it never made it to the digitrad:
Carter Family Lyrics.

Here's an interesting site with many songs by W.S. Hays. It has a sound clip of this song as 3/4 time, which is the way Kendall Morse sang it for me once. We do it in 4/4 with a different melody. There's also a great version done by Ralph Stanley, another by Dan Tyminski (the voice of George Clooney in O Brother Where Art Thou) with the same words and another melody.
Music of William Shakespeare Hays.

This thread reminded me of a happy time in my life when our children were young...hope you don't mind an oldtimer's reminince (look it up-I'm too lazy). Anyway, I have known this song nearly all my life, as Western songs were very big in the KY mountains in the thirties. After I married a New Yorker, we made our home on Long Island. When my older son was about 15, some record producer persuaded him to do a cover single of Arlo's then-new, "Alice's Restaurant." Looking for something to put on the flipside, we all started fooling around with jokey things and what came out was, "My Gene Autry Autographed Plywood Guitar," set to the tune of "When the Curtains of Night..." It sort of got away from us before it was finished, however it's still recognizable. Of course, the little record didn't go far, but I still have a copy or two (a Mama's heart!) around here somewhere. The company was Pickwick International (are they still in business?) and my son, Peter Pickow, is still making music (on his Martin guitar). Thanks for bringing back the memory of that sweet song, and of our hilarious parody (I THINK that Faith Petric actually recorded it, a few years back. The chorus was something like:

With her cowboys and pine trees and ten plastic coats,
She's beautifully stencilled with musical notes-
With her bright orange sunset she shines like a star,
My Gene Autry autographed plywood guitar!

(Sorry, I forgot what to do with the < >s) Jean

Jean, you can put <br> at the end of each line for line breaks, but I like feeling needed. :-) --JoeClone

I'LL REMEMBER YOU, LOVE, IN MY PRAYERS

Arr. by Albert Brumley, adapted by Susan O. Hinton

When the (C)curtains of night are pinned (F)back by the stars
And the (F)beautiful (C)moon leaps the (G)skies;(G7)
And the (C)dewdrops of heaven are (D7)kissing the rose
It is (G)then that my (G7)memory (C)flies;
As if on the wings of some (F)beautiful (C)dove,
In (F)haste with the (C)message it (G7)bears,
To (C)bring you a kiss of af- (F)fection and (C)say,
"Ill re- (G7member, you, love, in my (C)prayers."

CHORUS:
Go (C)where you will, on (F)land or on (C)sea,
I'll (F)share all your (C)sorrows and (G7)cares;
And at (C)night, when I kneel by my (F)bedside to (C)pray,
I'll re- (G7)member you, love, in my prayers.

I have loved you too fondly to ever forget
The love you have spoken to me,
And the kiss of affection still warm on my lips
When you told me how true you would be.
I know not if fortune be fickle or friend,
Or if time on your memory wears;
I know that I love you, wherever you roam,
And remember you, love, in my prayers.

When angels in heaven are guarding the good,
As God has ordained them to do,
In anseer to prayers I have offered to Him,
I know there is one watching you.
And may its bright spirit be with you through life,
To guide you up heavens' bright stairs,
And meet with the one who has loved you so true
And remembered you, love, in her prayers.

My understanding is that this song was written in the 1870's or 80's and was a popular hit back then. I don't think McCurdy was the author.

I have found a short fragment of it in an old cowboy songbook listed as a "traditional" song. This is probably all that a 14-year old who went off to become a cowboy could remember in later years, just a few sentimental lines from home.

It has also, with a slightly different tune, shown up in bluegrass circles in recent years. I believe you can also find it in the Levy sheet music collection online.

Here's the words I've been singing for the past few years.

I'LL REMEMBER YOU, LOVE, IN MY PRAYERS

When the curtains of night are pinned back by the stars,
And the beautiful moon sweeps the sky,
And the dew drops of heaven are kissing the rose,
It is then that my memories fly.
As if on the wings of some beautiful dove,
In haste with the message it bears.
To bring you a kiss of affection and say,
I'll remember you love in my prayers.

Chorus:
Go where you will, on land or on sea
I'll share all your sorrows and cares
And at night when I kneel by my bedside to pray,
I'll remember you love in my prayers

I have loved you too fondly to ever forget
The love you have spoken to me
With your kiss of affection still warm on my lips,
You told me how true you would be.
I know not if fortune be fickle or fair,
Or if time on your memory wears.
I know that I love you, wherever you roam,
And will remember you love in my prayers.

Chorus:

When the angels in heaven are guarding the good,
As God has ordained them to do,
In answer to prayers I have offered to him,
I know there is one guarding you.
And may his bright spirit be with you through life,
To guide you up heaven's bright stairs
To meet with the one who has loved you so long,
And remembered you love, in her prayers.
?

Chorus:

Ed McCurdy recorded this beautiful but very short song which I found on an lp, "Song of the West" Ed McCurdy. (Tradition Everest 2061) Does anyone have additional words to this song? Did McCurdy write it himself? If so will you please send your info to my email address? Thanks! Also interested in general info about McCurdy and his work. He was evidently born about 1919 in Willow Hill, PA.

WHEN THE CURTAINS OF NIGHT

When the curtains of night
are pinned back by the stars
and the beautiful moon sweeps the sky
I'll remember your love in my breast.

When the curtains of night
are pinned back by the stars
and the dewdrops of heaven kiss the rose
I'll remember your love in my breast.
