Subject: RE: Looking for (oppressive love) songs... From: leeneia Date: 03 Feb 22 - 10:51 PM Here's one from the Bothy Band Do you love an apple? Do you love a pear? Do you love a laddie with bonnie brown hair? Chorus (after each verse): But still I love him, I can't deny him I'll be with him wherever he goes Before I got married I wore a black shawl But since I got married I wear bugger all He stood at the corner, a fag in his mouth Two hands in his pockets, he whistled me out He works at the pier for nine bob a week Come Saturday night, he comes rolling home drunk Before I got married I'd sport and I'd play But now, the cradle, it gets in me way Do you love an apple? Do you love a pear? Do you love a laddie with bonnie brown hair? |
Subject: RE: Looking for (oppressive love) songs... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Feb 22 - 11:41 AM You'll find many Lehrer songs in the DT: Here's I'll Hold Your Hand In Mine Here is a thread about his satire and if you look at the top it has links to related songs and discussions. Tom performing it on YouTube |
Subject: RE: Looking for (oppressive love) songs... From: GUEST,MaJoC the Filk Date: 02 Feb 22 - 09:28 AM What about Tom Lehrer's "I hold your hand in mine"? Goes down wonderfully played live: starts sweet and gets progressively more interesting. (Being a Mudcat tyro, it doesn't appear I can make a link for it, but it was the top item when I did a Supersearch for the title.) Hope this helps. |
Subject: RE: Looking for (oppressive love) songs... From: gillymor Date: 02 Feb 22 - 08:47 AM THE BLACKSMITH A blacksmith courted me, nine months or better He fairly won my heart, wrote me a letter With his hammer in his hand, he looked so clever And if I were with my love, I would live forever Oh, where has my love gone with his cheeks like roses He's gone across the sea gathering primroses Will burn and scorch I fear the shining sun his beauty And if I were with my love, I would do my duty Strange news is come to town, strange news is carried Sad news cried up and down, that my love is married I wish them both much joy, though they can't hear me And if I were with my love, I'd do my duty What did you promise me when you lay beside me You said you'd marry me and not deny me If I said I'd marry you, 'twas only to try you So bring your witness, love, and I'll not deny you Oh, witness I have none, save God Almighty And may he reward you well for the slighting of me Her lips grew pale and wan; her heart did tremble For to think she'd had one love, and he proved deceitful Then there's Cole Porter's So in Love from Kiss Me Kate. |

From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Feb 22 - 05:22 AM I'd rather see you dead little girl Than to be with another man You'd better keep your head, little girl Cos you don't know what I am....etc. John Lennon, Run For Your Life, a song he later expressed mucho regret about. |
Subject: RE: Looking for (oppressive love) songs... From: raheenranger Date: 02 Feb 22 - 05:14 AM This is my version nowadays (in case anyone is bothered) You nymphs and swains do sympathise in my sorrow, And pity a poor maid that's sorely oppressed For since Cupid first stung me with his killing arrow, My mind is tormented, I can find no rest. I am hourly repining and constantly sighing For as handsome young a fellow as ever was known. For since Adam's creation, you'll find in no nation, A youth like young Edward, the boast of Athlone. In the spring when the small birds they all join together, They would charm the green groves and valleys likewise. The refreshing breezes denote the mild weather, The violets do spring and the primroses rise. It was in that very season, a young man most pleasing, His charm and affection unto me made known. I vow and declare, my heart did ensnare, Young Edward the beauty and boast of Athlone. As I happened to stray, by the clear river Shannon, Where I first saw young Edward going out for a stroll. He saluted me most kindly, crying 'Dearest Mary Mahon', I hope you will escort me through the dark shady groves. I hope you won't refuse me, I pray, do excuse me.' Those words he repeated in his soft mellow tone. I being sorely bent on my course, straight I went With young Edward the beauty and boast of Athlone. I courted young Edward for better than three years, A most modest young fellow as ever drew breath. Until a comrade of mine our love did discover, And soon put an end to our joy and our mirth She told his aged mother that we went together, And to have us parted far away from our home, It's in grief I do relate it, the job they completed, And banished young Edward, the boast of Athlone. But since he is gone, may kind fortune shine on him, And keep him from harm, wherever he may roam. May providence protect him, and angels may guard him Until he's safe landed on a far distant shore. And may that unhappy girl who banished my pearl, May she feel her remorse until her last dying moan. And likewise his aged mother who took delight forever In banishing young Edward the boast of Athlone. |

Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: hesperis Date: 15 Mar 01 - 01:08 PM Okay, this is getting *too* oppressive... MMario has it better than the others, I think. Give me a few nice love songs, to even this out, ok? |

Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Deckman Date: 15 Mar 01 - 12:23 PM The only song, and I just remember a fragment, is: Violate me, in the violet time, In the vilest way that you can. CHEERS |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Noreen Date: 15 Mar 01 - 09:46 AM Not in the DT, only in my head- not heard anyone else sing it (or come across anyone who's heard it) for 20-odd years. Could write it out on manuscript and scan it in. I've typed out the rest of the words- I'll post them in a min. |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: MMario Date: 15 Mar 01 - 08:34 AM so maybe we should ask flattop what he considers an "oppressive" love song. I have heard sets that were like listening to audio treacle - by the end you were so saturated with sweetness that it was disgusting - though individually the songs were fine. it's just that piled on top of each other ...

Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: hesperis Date: 15 Mar 01 - 12:38 AM LOL! Interesting... Where do I find the melody? Or is it in the DT? |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Noreen Date: 14 Mar 01 - 10:25 PM Would this do? Came into my head on the way home from a great sing tonight, and the word 'oppressed' rang bells... *grin* Come all ye nymphs and ye swains, sympathise in my sorrow And yes, I'd love you to have a go at it- it's a strange old song. |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: hesperis Date: 14 Mar 01 - 10:07 PM LOL, actually, I'm only throwing this out for the h of it! flattop accused me of playing a set full of "opressive love songs" in the review he did of me on the Orillia Folk Society Monthly thread. I didn't think they were that oppressive!!! I just wanted to see what 'catters would come up with. Probably "songs about love which are oppressive to listen to" would come closest to the definition. And I want specific titles, too, not "search the DT". What do you feel is a good "oppressive" love song, (or just a love song,) and why? And would you like to hear me sing it? ~*sirepseh*~ |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Noreen Date: 14 Mar 01 - 10:27 AM Or both...? *grin* (I've been accused of something similar...) |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Jacob B Date: 14 Mar 01 - 09:53 AM Yes, hesperis, you need to clarify. Did you mean "songs about oppressive love" or "songs about love which are oppressive to listen to"? |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Noreen Date: 14 Mar 01 - 09:04 AM @love @death brings up 85 songs; @love @murder finds 42... what sort of oppression did you have in mind, hesperis? :0) |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: nutty Date: 14 Mar 01 - 03:57 AM Typing - murder - into the Digitrad box at the top of the page gets you 326 songs to choose from - and you could futher refine the seach I hate to think how many you would get if you included a Forum seach as well |
Subject: RE: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: Amos Date: 13 Mar 01 - 11:14 PM You mean like "I killed my girl in yonder vale" or "my boyfriend knocked me up and abandoned me" type oppression? There in the DT by the score! A |
Subject: Semi-BS: Looking for Songs... From: hesperis Date: 13 Mar 01 - 10:24 PM Oppressive Love Songs, to be precise. And preferably trad, or public domain... So, what do you want to hear me sing? ~*sirepseh*~ |
