I've heard a beautiful song which I believe is called "Suppertime"...It describes a scene from our youth when our Mother used to call, "Come Home, Come Home it's Suppertime..(as shadows start to fall?)..Any help on this?

Gary:

My folks used to sing that when I was growing up. I'm caught up in something at this moment, but later today I'll post the lyrics if someone hasn't already beaten me to it.

When I was but a boy in days of childhood
I used to play 'til evening shadows come;
Then, winding down an old familiar pathway
I heard my mother call at set of sun:

CHORUS: Come home, come home, it's suppertime--
The shadows lengthen fast--
Come home, come home, it's suppertime--
We're going home at last.

Years later by her bedside I was kneeling,
And angel-wings were winnowing the air;
She heard the call for suppertime in Heaven--
And now I know she's waiting for me there. CHORUS

In mem'ry I can see her standing yonder,
And her familiar voice I hear once more;
The banquet table's ready up in Heaven;
It's suppertime upon that golden shore. CHORUS

Funny you should post this at this time. My friends, The Beans do a wonderful job on this song, and in today's mail I got an out-of-print CD of gospel songs by Merle Haggard, which include Suppertime. It IS a fine song, and one I'd nver come across until I heard the Beans sing it last year at the NOMAD festival in Newtown, CT.

IMHO: After I heard it by Jimmie Davis...All others PALED in COMPARISON...
A lot of singers 'mouthed the words'...but no real feeling in them...
If Garth & Reba see this post, they may try it also...

Used to have an LP of Johnny Cash many years ago, on which he does a fine version of this song. Also on that album, which I'd like back, was a song I loved called "5 feet high and rising"   I'd like the words of that one if anybody has them.

A friend, Robert Oneman Johnson, has a tune called "I Don't Care What You Call Me Just Please Don't Call Me Late For Suppertime". At first glance at the thread title I thought that's what you were inquiring about.

You can find the lyrics to "Supper Time" on U Tube by Heather Berry Song # 43 you can download the video to listen & watch as she sings while playing the guitar. She sings it the way my parents use to sing it in the early 50's when I was just a young girl. It was a beautiful song with a spoken part between the 1st & 2nd verse. I don't remember but I know it was wonderful. I have the song posted on my timeline on Facebook. & you are welcome to check it out. My email is greenbikeshop@yahoo.com. if you have any questions. The song is an old Jimmy Davis song. Good luck
Sandra Templeton
