MARRIED BY THE BIBLE, DIVORCED BY THE LAW
(I don't have the composer credits handy at the moment, but I think you can safely bet on C. E. Snow, 1952.)

What a strange world we live in! what a shame, oh, what a shame!
Someone's always quarreling, then marriage don't remain.
Divorces by the thousand, is this human race insane?
I always thought that marriage should be a sacred thing.

CHORUS: Married by the Bible, divorced by the law.
Every day there's more and more, the worst I ever saw.
Things have changed; they're not the same, as the days of maw and paw.
They were married by the Bible, no divorces by the law.

Steps are often taken, without thinking twice,
And oft-times there's a child or two who's left to pay the price.
Those little hearts so innocent, they don't know who's to blame.
No mom and dad to love them, what a shame, oh, what a shame!

Recite chorus, adding the word "and" before "divorced" and "no divorces," then sing chorus.

I have to confess that as much as I dearly love the music of Hank Snow, this is one that doesn't hold up for me quite as much as the rest of his music. It is as though I feel I ought to apologize for even knowing something that so many would immediately consign to the ditch pile as being too, too sentimental. Maybe we are just living in too cynical a time, I don't know. It is certain, though, that he practiced what he preached, having been married to his wife, Minnie, for over sixty years.
Not to belabor the point about loving the music of Hank Snow, but my very first album of over 2,000 (vinyl and CD) was his Just Keep A-Movin' which I bought in 1955, and I have four boxed sets of his music from Bear Family, covering everything he did from 1936-1958.

Thanks Dale..you can bet I'll sing it at the next jam..I love Hank Snow..in fact, I often say I love country music when everybody was named Hank...Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Hank Locklin..etc.! I actually met Snow twice backstage at concerts in Duluth, Minnesota in my youth..impressed me as being somewhat humble for being an Opry Star. As for Sentimental..you bet!..I love sentimental..it is tough today for our jaded populace to find real feelings in our activities and music...We don't have to live in darkness though it sometimes surrounds us..Keep on the Sunny Side!
