Subject: Flying Column Album From: Fel Date: 15 Mar 01 - 02:53 AM Hello: I was wondering if the Flying Column ever released an album of their own? I can only seem to find them in rare compilations of many different groups. Thanks |
Subject: RE: Flying Column Album From: DonMeixner Date: 15 Mar 01 - 09:03 AM Before anyone asks me if we have ever put out an album, Fel is speaking of a completely different band. I understand The Flying Column was a duo from Ireland and they broke up or quit recording several years ago. Frankie Curran and Glenn Curtin both told me at a festival that the Flying Columns version of The Four Green Fields was the best they'd ever heard. The Flyin' Column of Syracuse,NY (no "g" in Flyin' and a small difference I know.) has performed continually for 30 years and in that time has been able to avoid the opportunity to record many times. When the name was picked we had no clue about the other group and by the time it was known to the members of the band we were too entrnched locally to change it. And the other group had come and gone by then anyway. I have been in the band for the past 12 years and when I learned thatt we shared a name I asked the oldest member of the band about it at the time. He said "We had it first." Well its a big world out there and we can share I guess. I have heard that they had recordings but I haven't seen any. Don |
Subject: RE: Flying Column Album From: Jimmy C Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:56 AM There was a group in Belfast called " The Flying Column" I have a few of their recordings 1 - Folk Music Time in Ireland, and Four Green Fields. They were a quartet, the lead male and lead female singers were married. (Eamonn Largey and Kathleen McCready"). Eamonn was a friend of mine, who unfortunately was killed in an automobile accident. I heard also thet Kathleen has passed away also but I am not sure of this. Fel - please PM me if you need anymore info. |

I had heard about the automobile accident just a few weeks ago, and that brought back memories of how much I liked their music. I'd Private Message you, but I'm not quite sure how. Go raibh maith agat, Fel |
