is such a beautiful dark chilling anthemic song

still sends uncomfortable shivers every time I think of it
let alone sing it....

Gee, that's one of the better German translations I've seen. Some rough spots, but not bad.

I have seen a third translation into German that is slightly different from the ones posted. Forgive my spelling it has been a long time since I was in Austria;

I love this song because Rogers and Hammerstein chose to write an original song instead of using an actual traditional song from Austria for this scene.

That being said, can people suggest some trad. Alpine songs that might have been used in the musical?

One to one translation of any language to another is impossible without abandoning all meter and rhyme. I should not have said "correct"- it can be correct only in that it doesn't trash the meaning of the original and is poetically acceptable in the language of the translation. Having translated a book from German to English (no poetry, thankfully) I know how hard it is to take a phrase in one language and find one in the other that expresses the idea satisfactorily.

Hi, Genie - the umlauts and s-zeds work ok here on AOL Britain, but they may not work on some versions of Netscape.
Frank/Dicho - don't know if I'd say there is a "correct" German translation. The one I posted is about the same as the one you linked to. It's not an exact translation, but it doesn't sound as stupid and clumsy as some German translations I've seen.

A word of caution about the plant Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum). I put some in my rock garden, and it started to take over. I had a hard time killing it out. Rangers here in the nearby Canadian Rockies warn against trying to establish the plant here, as it can interfere with native plants. A homesick Swiss put some in a park locale here, but luckily he wrote a letter to the Editor about it and it was found and removed.

Joe, Germans using technical or scientific language have abandoned the funny letter ß and use ss (grüsst) instead. But grüßt is still used in old-fashioned literary German. The umlaut is still necessary in either case. Similarly, edelweiss and edelweiß are acceptable. You must be consistent, however (Now did I do the hmtl correctly?)

Of course, we know that's "Edelweiss," and that the original lyrics were written in English by Oscar Hammerstein. Many times, people ask me for the "real" version in German. I haven't seen a German translation that totally satisfies me, but here's one:

Don't have the tab, but it is in the key of A and uses just three chords A,D, & E. I picked up some of it watching the movie (though I doubt Christopher Plummer plays) and confirmed it in a book.
