Subject: Ides of March: Songs? From: Barbara Shaw Date: 15 Mar 01 - 02:04 PM We're having a "hoot" (song circle) tonight, and the theme for the first round is "Ides of March." It was my own dumb idea, and now I can't think of a single song to fit the theme! I can stretch the idea to include Italian / Rome, and then use license to do a song with the word "roam" in it, but that's it. Any ideas??!! |

Subject: RE: Ides of March: Songs? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Mar 01 - 02:52 PM I don't know any songs, but it's been three of the crappiest days so far this year! Tuesday started with a training session, during which part of the ceiling collapsed about 6 feet behind me, I went into shock, had an asthma attack and had to be brought home..... The following day, I was about as strong as wet toilet tissue, and had just announced that I had to take it easy, when the fire alarm went, and had to walk down 9 floors. Then today, the heating has been going haywire, and I had to leave early again, because I was about to faint! Throughout this week, I've had palpitations, what I think is high blood pressure and the weirdest feeling that I'm falling up. Joy. LTS |

Subject: RE: Ides of March: Songs? From: Steve Latimer Date: 15 Mar 01 - 02:56 PM Does the Ides of March have any signifigance other than for Julius Caesar? Was it a holiday or festival or was Ides just a way of marking Mid-Month? |

Subject: RE: Ides of March: Songs? From: Hollowfox Date: 15 Mar 01 - 02:58 PM How about songs that give warning, especially ignored warnings? I'd put a limit on just how many songs about the Titanic, and how "Banks of the Ohio"-type murder songs can be done (after you've done yours, of course). And how about songs that mention wind? |

Subject: RE: Ides of March: Songs? From: Hollowfox Date: 15 Mar 01 - 03:01 PM Ooo, take care, Liz. It's been a strange week here, but nothing as hair-raising as yours. (I'm glad the ceiling didn't clobber you.) |

Subject: RE: Ides of March: Songs? From: Barbara Shaw Date: 15 Mar 01 - 04:27 PM Steve, found the following when you piqued my curiosity about the Ides of March: The original Roman calendar, introduced about the 7th century BC, had 10 months with 304 days in a year that began with March. Two more months, January and February, were added later in the 7th century BC, but because the months were only 29 or 30 days long, an extra month had to be intercalated approximately every second year. The days of the month were designated by the awkward method of counting backward from three dates: the calends, or first of the month; the ides, or middle of the month, falling on the 13th of some months and the 15th of others; and the nones, or 9th day before the ides. I've decided to do "You've Been a Friend To Me" for the friendship between Caesar and Brutus.

Subject: RE: Ides of March: Songs? From: mousethief Date: 15 Mar 01 - 06:41 PM Huzzah for tradition! Some traditions of course are more nonsensical than others, but that's hardly a reason to stop doing them! |
