I couldn't sleep one night, and so got up with a confused combination of two songs going through my head. The tune was Goin' Around This World Baby Mine an old-time standard that the Coon Creek Girls recorded, I think. Funny thing was, I started singing:

What did Delaware, baby mine?
What did Delaware, baby mine?
What did Delaware,
A New Jersey to the fair
What did Delaware, baby mine?

What did Tennessee, baby mine (3X)
A shiny Nebrasky
What did Tennessee, baby mine

What did Idaho, baby mine? (3X)
Alaska, I don't know
What did Idaho, baby mine?

What does Ioway, baby mine? (3X)
About a Washing-ton, I'd say
What does Ioway, baby mine?

Hawaii today, baby mine? (3X)
Been in Missouri all day
Hawaii today, baby mine?

And so on. It being near 2 AM by now, the verses got a little risque with
How did Wiscon-sin, baby mine? (3X)

I'll leave that one up to your imaginations! The point? What's the real origin of these jokes? Seems I heard an old Woody Guthrie record with some of them on it, especially the What did Delaware verse. Anybody else remember this novelty song? It had a different tune, I'm sure.
Jim

Can't tell you who did it, but I remember it as a 50's hit in the UK for somebody like Perry Como. I'm sure it was called "What did Delaware"
It was structured something like this -

What did Delaware, boy, what did Delaware,
What did Delaware, boy, what did Delaware.
She wore a brand New Jersey,
She wore a brand New Jersey,
She wore a brand New Jersey,
That's what Delawore.

What did Missisip, boy, what did Missisip,
What did Missisip, boy, what did Missisip,
She sipped a Minisoda,
She sipped a Minisoda,
She sipped a Minisoda,
hat's what Missisipped.

love, john

Dita, Yeah, that's rather the way I remember it as well. But Perry Como? Possible. I like the verse about What did Mississip'. Hmmm, wonder if this might be a good song challenge?

Perry Como sang it on his show. I am sure he recorded it.

Not sleeping seems to be a pastime of mine.....I remeber there is a verse about 'What did Ohi owe" but I don't remember what it was. I reckon we need to track this one down........or maybe I'll try to get some sleep.
