Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T BE CRUEL (Blackwell/Presley) From: GUEST,heres the best one: my own personal creation Date: 09 Aug 11 - 02:55 AM DON'T BE CRUEL Words and music by Otis Blackwell and Elvis Presley, 1956 As recorded by Elvis Presley You know I can be found, Sitting home all alone, If you can't come around, At least please telephone. Don't be cruel to a heart that's true. Baby, if I made you mad For something I might have said, Please, let's forget the past, The future looks bright ahead, Don't be cruel to a heart that's true.
I don't want no other love, [Your friendly neighborhood Mudelf has decided that the lyrics originally posted here were a waste of space, but since the lyrics to DON'T BE CRUEL had never been posted at Mudcat before, he decided to convert this message to something potentially useful by restoring the original lyrics as sung by Elvis. All our GUEST had done was substitute "troll" for "true" all the way through.] |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: GUEST,AJ in Saanich Date: 06 May 10 - 07:26 PM Don't think I'm down hearted ....because we have parted... or lonely or terribly blue.... As I write this letter...I've never felt better... And I have a question for you.... Are you lonesome tonight? ... If you are....serves you right... Just for spoiling the evening I'd planned... How you led me to think...with that come-hither wink...then at your door you just...shook my hand.... How you pleased me and teased me...and passion implied... But the promise was false...and fulfillment...denied... So for me..shed no tear...cause I'm glad you're not here...And I hope that you're lonesome tonight.... Yes..this heartache will pass...for I feel it's just gas... so I hope that you're lonesome...tonight! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Carol Date: 03 Feb 07 - 05:09 AM Yes Anne I was the guilty one and can't remember where I originally 'collected' it from, but here goes and see if the paste thing works. I do like to sing the song strtaight first time around then anyone who hasn't heard it before is lulled into a false sense of security! Are You Lonesome Tonight ? Are you lonesome tonight Do you miss me tonight Are you sorry we drifted apart Does your memory stray to a bright summer's day When l kissed you and called you sweetheart Do the chairs in yourparlour Seem empty & bare Do you gaze at your doorstep And picture me there ls your heart filled with pain Shall l come back again Tell me dear are you lonesome tonite Are you lonesome tonight ? ls your brassiere too tight Are you're corsets all falling apart Does the size of your chest Wear big holes in your vest ? Does your spare tyre reach up to your heart ? Are your stockings all laddered And shoes wearing thin Do you hold up your bloomers With a big safety pin ? Are your false teeth all worn Do they drop when you yawn ? Then no wonder you're lonesome tonite |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Snuffy Date: 02 Feb 07 - 07:14 PM Is this the one, Anne? Are you lonesome tonight? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: GUEST,Anne Date: 02 Feb 07 - 02:16 PM Kim C. Folk used to wear a bra and a corset in the old days. Said corset then was not like todays, but was much more utilitarian and extended from thighs to above waist (without the bra bit) usualy made out of salmon pink cloth and with laces up the front! As for parody someone sang it at Banbury this year (think you were there Snuffy)and it was the one about 'corsets all falling apart'and 'does the size of your chest wear two holes in your vest' etc I'd love all the words if anyone could post them here please! |
Subject: Lyr Add: SENIOR'S LAMENT /ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT From: HiHo_Silver Date: 02 Feb 07 - 01:34 PM Here is a version might be of interest to some: I do not have a clue where I picked up these lyrics. All credit to whoever composed this. SENIOR'S LAMENT ----melody: ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT Are you lonesome tonight? Does your tummy feel tight? Did you bring your Mylanta and Tums? Does your memory stray to that bright sunny day When you had all your teeth and your gums? Is your hairline receding, your eyes growing dim? Hysterectomy for her and it's prostate for him. Does your back give you pain? Do your knees predict rain? Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight? Is your blood pressure up, good cholesterol down? Are you eating your low-fat cuisine? All that oat bran and fruit, Metamucil to boot, Helps you run like a well-oiled machine. If it's football or baseball, he sure knows the score. Yes, he knows where it's at, but forgets what it's for. So your gall bladder's gone but your gout lingers on. Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight? When you're hungry, he's not. When you're cold, he is hot. Then you start that old thermostat war. When you turn out the light, he goes left, you go right, Then you get his great symphonic snore. He was once so romantic, so witty, and smart. How did he turn out to be such a cranky old fart? So don't take any bets. It's as good as it gets. Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Scrump Date: 02 Feb 07 - 11:52 AM It reminds me of this: I wonder if you're lonesome tonight, I don't wanna call, Maybe that's 'cause you're eleven feet tall. But all the world's a stage, they say, I've often heard that said, But I don't have a wooden heart, I have a wooden head. (from Benny Hill's song Transistor Radio) |
Subject: Lyr Add: ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT (Homer & Jethro) From: GUEST,Robert Perry Date: 02 Feb 07 - 11:41 AM Here's the entire transcript, including the spoken parts: ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT Homer & Jethro Are you lonesome tonight? If you are, serves you right. I'm so happy you left me at last I can still hear you roar: "Make the beds, mop the floor, do the laundry and then mow the grass You took me for a boat ride I had to swim back Darlin' I thought I'd never Get out of that sack Should you fly back again Park your broom and come in Darlin' that's why you're lonesome tonight (spoken) Shortspeare once said: "All the world's a stage" It ain't much of a line, but if it's good enough for Elvis, it's good enough for us. Act 1 (Woman) You took me home to meet yer folks and I can still hear your father whispering: "Son, that gal's cross eyed, knock kneed, stringy headed, buck toothed" but all you said was: (Man) Ah, paw, you don't have to whisper: she's deaf, too." Act 2 (Woman) Our engagement lasted 10 years, 'cuz I wouldn't marry you when you was drunk (Man) Yeah, and I wouldn't marry you when I was sober. Act 3 (Woman) The only romantic thing you ever said to me was that I creeped into your heart, and I creeped into your brain and you creeped into your mind. (Man) Nah, all I ever said was that you were the biggest creep I'd ever seen. Act 4 (Woman) We finally settled down to our little honeymoon cottage and every Friday night, our friends and neighbors would come over to watch the fights. (Man) Yeah, and we didn't even have a TV set, but we had a fight every Friday night. One night I blacked yer eyes, broke yer nose and knocked yer teeth out and you got chicken and called the cops. (Woman) You told them not to believe a word I said, 'cuz I's "punch drunk". (Sung) So, I'll miss you my pet Every chance that I get Darlin' that's why you're lonesome tonight (woman's trio tag) [But I won't be fer long] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Jun 02 - 04:43 PM Really sad, because that was "Will you miss me tonight, when I'm gone (boom oo yattatata, boom oo yattatata) Will our love be the same from now on........" But catching! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: The Walrus Date: 14 Jun 02 - 02:35 PM I'm afraid I can't hear "Are you lonesome tonight" without automatically thinking of the Morcombe & Wise "Boom - oo - Yattatata" sketch. Sad innit. Walrus |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Jun 02 - 11:57 AM I see that some playlists from The Dr. Demento Show include a song called "Are You Lonesome Tonight? (laughing version) - Elvis Presley." I don't think I've heard this one, but I presume it's some sort of outtake in which he broke up during a recording session. In a similar vein, a local radio station has played a recording of Rudy Vallee singing "There is a Tavern in the Town" in which he totally breaks up into hysterics halfway through. What prompts the breakup is that when he comes to the lines
I can no longer stay with you (stay with you) By the way, I did find some confirmation that Homer & Jethro recorded "Are You Lonesome Tonight" b/w "I Love Your Pizza" as a 45-rpm record, RCA #101030, or maybe RCA #4/60233, depending on which web site you believe. No other info, though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Steve Parkes Date: 20 Mar 01 - 03:23 AM Just checked: "words and music by Roy Turk and Lou Handman (1926)", it says on one website; another attributes it to the Carter Family! It says "Turk, Handman" on the L&J record label, so there. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Are you lonesome tonight---parody From: Steve Parkes Date: 20 Mar 01 - 03:18 AM I've been going through my 78s (a slow process -- there are about 500!) and came across one I must have bought sometime and never played: Layton & Johnston ("American duettists, with piano") singing -- yes! -- "Are you lonesome tonight?"! I just had to see if it was the same song, and it was; but without the "all the world's a stage" nonsense in the middle. L&J were recording in the thirties and forties, and from the style of the disc, I'd say this was probably from their earlier days. Yes, If I didn't know better, I'd have said Elvis's version was a parody! Steve |
