Check out the Wilsons, or Irish acapella group, The Voice Squad. Their rendition of Banks Of The Bann, is particularly good. You'll find them on youtube.

What's all this "sing what you're told" business? Why not just get together, do what you want to do, until a line or so stick?

Hmm a song a day might be a bit to big a challenge! When I was aiming to get back into performing I worked on a song each week. I was quite systematic about listing a repertoire, memorising the lyrics, learning the tune and working out accompaniments. It worked really well and it was great to be able to chart progress very clearly.

I'll venture to jump in here wuth a suggestion. No matter what kind of songs you are learning, try setting up a personal goal. You might, for example, tell yourself that you MUST learn ONE NEW SONG a day. It's not hard. Then at the end of a week, you've got seven new songs. Years ago, when I was living (starving ?) off my guitar, that was my goal. It worked for me and it might work for you. bob(deckman)nelson

Use your favourite search engine to scan the web for the keywords SATB and TTBB, which are abbreviations for choir voice arrangements. The first one is soprano / alto / tenor / base, and the second (I think) is tenor / tenor / baritone / base.

Some of the links you find will lead to free on-line vocal arrangements of traditional stuff; others will lead to retailers of such arrangements, but the prices are quite economical from what I've seen.

I also have an a cappella group of three, 2f 1m. and a double quartet of about 8 of us. Some of the early stuff we do is in three parts. Pastime with good company, Henry VIII, Blow thy horne hunter, Thomas Whytehorne, Gaudete, anon. Some rounds are also in three parts. Oh and catches are often in three parts too, ie Cakes and Ale, Purcell. I would have to think to get any more. We also do a lot of English folky stuff just freely harmonized, it works for us. Now "Bad Moon Rising" that IS interesting - will go and listen to that carefully. Actually, as a non-music theorist all this diatonic/chromatic chord stuff puzzles me - so I jest sing what I'm told! Actually, we do some enjoyable stuff (but I really have a secret yearning to be more of a rock chick (shock, horror - don't tell the rest of the band) - of course this may not be the same song I'm thinking of - but it's put me on a train of thought.

Tesco Shanty I vaguely know in bits but the Ranting Sleazos did it at Bromyard maybe 9 years ago. Search for them.

eg

verse line , "cleaning, sweeping", verse line - "dust dust away", verse 2 lines, "and were all bound for Tescos in the morning". I guess Walmart would fit equally. & there was a verse referring to sons as "feckless spotty crew".

The band Tamarack has nearly always been a 3 piece and every now and again you'll find a really cool a capella song on one of their CD's...

Four Bitchin' Babes sounds pretty apt - like Three Bickerin' Bandmembers.

We've done some "Christian" songs notably "Living in Beaulah Land" : Now that caused in-jokes down here on the Sussex coast, the question on every one's (well nearly)lips is "Where IS Beaulah Land?" I reckon it's up the M23 near IKEA.

Also, staggering through "Wondrous Love" They say the Devil has all the best tunes - well, I beg to differ!!

Off to the Library today!! (and the Sea Shanties suggestion is timely, thanks.)

Shanties - it mixes-up the reprtoire. What about the Tesco Shanty - as performed by the Ranting Sleazos. I have a Knittershanty (knitting and sailors - it works believe me) that benefitts from a male voice for some verses and female for others. Chorus with three voices in turn is very effective.

Stan Hugill reputedly hated harmonies but gave-in because the audience can take over and there are more of them.

Having seen archive footage of Stan and a few mates demonstrating shanties they needed all their puff hauling. So harmonies and a lot of the superfluous conjunctions, articles, and even adjectives can be considered modern bastardizations. But it's what the audience want!

Oooh! Artisan we've had a look at their stuff - someone even suggested we sounded like them (more to do with 2 female, 1 male voice I think than reality!! - yes, very polished!!

Humourous songs - does anyone know the chords to "Dead Dog Scrumpy" ? I'd just like to sing it as a tribute to my old mate Trevor Crozier.

Keep it coming - please noy out of the nursey rhyme woods yet! Although we are going for a quick burst of King Arthur's Servants this afternoon.

Have a humorous song or two up your sleeve. Eric Bogle does a harmony or two on "Somebody's moggy". And out-of-rhythm asides work well with groups, time "part variation" rather than key if you will.

The Artisan repertoire might yield songs that appeal. They are a bit too polished, I feel, but you don't have to copy their rendering too closely.

A nice, competent lady named Karen Myers has done a good book called Harmonious Companions which has vocal harmonizations (two, three and four-part) to one hundred traditional songs (good ones, too). Published by Perkunas Press, 7 Currituck Rd., Newtown, CT, US.

I'm a (non-proper) singer in a 3-part harmony acappella group: There's a argument going down here between artistic perfection and "SOMETHING TO flippin' well sing!"

Dearest Mudcatters! Do you have/know any 3 part harmony adaptable songs we can sing? I am stuck in the middle between trying to sing 2 parts of a Cooper, Boyess, Simpson song and flippin nursery rhymes - I don't know songs - what do you suggest please???
