Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Art Thieme Date: 20 Mar 01 - 12:34 PM Funny you should ask right at this moment !? The mail just arrived with a CD of U. Utah Phillips #77 LOAFER'S GLORY radio show in which Bruce used interview tape recordings I made in 1961 of the 93 year old Wobbly (I.W.W. union member) PAUL DURST. I just heard it the first time and I've got tears in my eyes. That's for real. I've always known it was a valuable interview, but Mr. Phillips used tapes of friends of his doing ths songs Paul sang interspersed with the actual captured dialoge and song snippets of Paul Durst singing and fiddling. It was obviously a labor of love for Utah and I'm honored by his attention to those long ago interviews I did with this historically important gentleman when I was 20 years old. If you go to a U. Utah Phillips site, I'm sure you can hear it too. If it's not archived there yet, I'm sure it will be soon. All the best, Art Thieme |

From: BEK Date: 20 Mar 01 - 01:56 PM Just came back from NTIF where I got a fix: MacAlias - Highwired Two British ladies with amazing harmony and playing. "Wild West Romance" is a waltz time tune whose intertwined playing and harmonies had the car CD on repeat for about 100 miles of I-35 traffic jams. "John C. Clark" is an amazing song about 'real' love. Brian McNeill - Back of the North Wind I happen to think this is McNeill's best CD so far. I've had the distinct pleasure of hearing the man live three times and he just keeps getting better. Marc Cohn - I can't seem to get him OFF my turntable! Ed Miller - Scottish Songs and none too Serious. This was recorded at Austin's own Cactus Cafe. I've heard it enough to know most of the lyrics and I still listen whenever I need to cheer up. Jed Marum - Streets of Fall River. For those of you who don't know, Jed's a 'catter. I didn't get to hear him at NTIF, but his CD is good enough to make me want to brave I-35 one more time just to catch one of his Dallas gigs.
Cry Cry Cry - Okay, I can't seem to get past Track 2, Richard Shindell's version of "Cold Missouri Waters", but really, the rest of the collection is good, too. At least, I think it is.

Fred McDowell, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon, Leadbelly, Mance Lipscomb, Robert Pete Williams to name a few. But the last four slots are for circulating discs and here are some of its usual tenants: Bob Dylan: from "Bob Dylan" to "Blonde on Blonde" Woody Guthrie: "Asch recordings Vols. 1 & 2 Ramblin' Jack Elliot: "The Essential..." (Vanguard) Odetta: "The Essential..." (Vanguard) Koerner, Ray, and Glover: "Blues, Rags, and Hollers" and "Lots More Blues,..." Lightnin' Hopkins: "Lightnin' Hopkins" (Smithsonian) Rev. Gary Davis: "Pure Religion and Bad Company" (Smithsonian) Miss. John Hurt: "Best of..." (Vanguard) Dave Van Ronk: "Inside Dave Van Ronk" (Fantasy) Anyone else share similar? |

Incredible. I play this CD over and over, and take my commute to work with "Byker Hill" and "Sinnerman" running through my head. "The Temptations Sing Smokey." Another one that gets inside of me, and has me singing "My Girl" and "The Way You Do The Things You Do" to myself. Their legendary 1st album, and what a great soul singer David Ruffin was! "Nimrod" -a CD by the Berkeley rock band "Green Day." The song, "The Time Of Your Life" is a treasure. IMHO, one of the finest rock songs to come around in a long time. Another one that's gotten alot of time on my CD player lately. -chanteyranger |

Nimrod also has "Hitching A Ride" and "Redundant" which are favorites of mine to play. Have you heard the new album, Warning? It's more of a happy, pop-punk kind of sound. And a lot of it is very folky-sounding. "Minority" even has accordions and folk-like acoustic flatpicking. Check it out. And what could be more of a folkie anthem?

You can catch him this coming Sept at the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield, Kansas, USA. There the paid performers will line up around the stage to hear him! I especially love the albumn he made with his hero, Chet Atkins-the track "Ode to Mel Bay". Happy hunting! |

From: Mooh Date: 22 Mar 01 - 07:39 AM Pretty much the same stuff that was there the last time I answered this question, so I guess I haven't been too musically curious lately. Lunasa, Led Zeppelin, Simon Mayor, Rolling Stones tribute from the House of Blues label, Hound Dog Taylor tribute, Acoustic Guitar magazine cd, Little Feet, Purcell...more dust than I generally allow. Nothing has really twisted my ears lately, though I was re-listening to some live Phish the other day. Cool grooves. Mooh.

Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Jo King Date: 22 Apr 01 - 10:56 PM Hello folks, I have always had fun buying new albums/cds. I can not wait to get them open and read the liner notes to begin enjoying the purchase before I can get to my stereo to really soak it up. The experiences that bring the greatest pleasure often involve the purchase of a recording where I know a bit about the band and think I would like it ...... but I don't know. I just had the good fortune to go to Elderly instruments, and among the items I got were The String Cheese Incident - Carnival '99, Leftover Salmon - The Nashville Sessions, and The David Grisman Quintet - DGQ 20. I was confident in the DGQ 20 choice, and yes it is incredible. SCI and LoS I was not sure. Oh my God. "What is in my cd player?" I would have to say "joy and inspiration." |

Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Little Hawk Date: 22 Apr 01 - 11:07 PM A fine layer of dust. Oddly enough I barely ever listen to recorded music these days. I play a certain amount of music myself and go to the odd live performance by others, but I don't listen to recorded music. Why? I honest to God don't know. It doesn't seem to matter like it used to. It used to matter a lot, but not anymore. I guess I could say that: "Things Have Changed" I have listened a number of times to a meditation tape recently, but that was for purposes of meditating...which is a little different. - LH |

Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Lepus Rex Date: 23 Apr 01 - 12:24 AM LH, I have a possibly related problem with recorded music: Once I've seen the musician/s perform live, especially if they were really good, I tend to ignore their cds. So it seems that I listen to the music of a lot of dead people, and people who don't tour outside Kazakhstan much... This week, the cds I've had in my cd player: Nick Cave, "No More Shall We Part"; Maria Kalaniemi, self titled cd from 1992; "Setu Songs," a Finnish release of songs from Setuland; Sacred Reich, "Independent"; "Het daghet inden Oosten," a collection of bagpipe music from the Netherlands; Kokomo Arnold, "Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1930-1935)"; Trip Shakespeare, "Are you Shakespearienced?"; Supernova, "Ages 3 & Up"; and Motörhead, "Bomber." ---Lepus Rex |
Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Peter Kasin Date: 23 Apr 01 - 12:55 AM Just got Irish flute player Kevin Crawford's new CD, "In Good Company." It's outstanding! He celebrates the flute/fiddle combination by recording with eight fiddlers, each fiddler on two or more sets of tunes with him, (a sort of Irish trad version of the Sinatra "duets" recording!) including a great, great track of Crawford, Tommy Peoples, and Arty McGlynn on guitar. -chanteyranger |

From: Stewie Date: 23 Apr 01 - 02:22 AM I am listening to Clarence 'Tom' Ashley 'Greenback Dollar: The Music of Clarence 'Tom' Ashley 1929-33' County CO-CD-3520. The back cover has a note: 'An outstanding collection of pre-war recordings by the legendary old-time musician Clarence 'Tom' Ashley'. 'Outstanding' is an understatement. Given the unwritten law of the reissue business - that the very best will disappear more quickly than one could possibly comprehend - anyone interested in old-timey, 'white tradition' blues or early commercial recordings of folk performances should grab this while it is available. --Stewie. |

Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 23 Apr 01 - 08:42 AM Friends round for lunch on Sunday. I played an early Nat King Cole while we were waiting for them all to turn up. Followed by Bert Jansch "Live in Glasgow/Young Man's Blues" followed by Davey Graham "Folk Blues and Beyond" followed by Best of Miss. John Hurt followed by an early Lena Horne. I then asked for requests ( I was on the post lunch Metaxas by then and feeling mellow!) and a little skiffle was asked for (honest, no arm twisting!)so I put on the 2-CD Disky "Skiffle- as good as it gets" compilation with the forgotten bands like Les Hobeaux and the Original Barnstormers. Incidentally, one of my friends said he'd been trying to find lyrics to Life gets tedious and Four Legged friend and was most impressed when I went up to the old non-networked PC and ran him off a copy of both which I'd got from discussions here. He now has a list of this and other lyrics sites! He looked at the Handful of Songs lyric we'd been puzzlingover recently and thinks it's OK. He couldn't add to Gossie Goosei though! Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 19 Sep 12 - 08:35 PM now that I've moved my player from the depths of my cabinet, almost behind a side table, I can SEE the buttons! & no longer have to get into a contorted position (no good for my back & other sore bits) I'm playing more music. Recent CDs - some Fine Art from Art Thieme, Jim Brannigan ('Catter JimLad), local friends Collector (traditional Australian), another friend Bruce Watson & his friends with Unsung Heroes of Australian History, Short Sharp Shanties vol 1 - yet another friend is ordering us copies of vols 2 & 3. Life is sooo much better with a CD player beside my left elbow. And the shelf that contained the player & speakers is now home to around 2 years worth (over 2 ft wide!) of unsorted CDs. I really must sort them some time. sandra |

From: SteveMansfield Date: 20 Sep 12 - 05:37 AM Current Top 5: Naragonia Quartet - 'Batiska' Flemish band playing gorgeous multi-instrumental dance music, just makes you want to dance wherever I'm listening to it. Just fab. Gilles Le Bigot - 'Empreintes #2' Great performances from Marthe Vassallo (singer) and Gilles le Bigot (guitar), but the real attraction for me is the God-like genius that is Jean-Michel Veillon on flute, especially when duetting with soprano saxophonist Ludovic Mesnil ... The Old Dance School 'Chasing The Light' Widescreen cinematic loveliness from the Birmingham septet. Again, worth the price of admission just for the interplay between the low whistle and trumpet. Calum Stewart & Heikki Bourgault 'Calum Stewart & Heikki Bourgault' Full-on flute from Calum Stewart playing bourrees, polskas, an dros, and the occasional reel, with great accompaniment on guitar and cittern from Heikki Bourgault. The best new flautist I've discovered in many a year. Penguin Cafe - A Matter Of Life ... Minimalist but warm, serial but organic, I'm just so pleased to have the Penguin Cafe back in action, and there's some stuff on here every bit as good as the classic PCO repertoire. |

Can't say I'm impressed. Only track I've played several times is Its Not Dark Yet sung by a guy with a Wandering Star voice and I keep trying to remember to check who he is. Mostly I'd much rather hear the Dylan original but the car won't even play cassettes never mind 7" reel to reels. |
Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 21 Sep 12 - 06:21 AM Honestly? Some of the raw recordings for the The wife's new album. All trad and all Scottish - Anarchie Gordon, something in Gaelic I can't spell, Banks of Fordie, Slaves Lament (OK Burns not Trad, but lovely all the same) etc, etc. Just her a'cappella or with her guitar (or bouzouki). I think most of the tracks will probably stay like that as well. Apart from that a stunning album from Lucy Pringle & Chris wright ..... covers pretty much the same territory as above. Has Wendy been feeding me Tartan Pills I wonder? |
