Just bought a compilation ( well, actually Micca bought it for me) called "And We'll All Have Tea", featuring Richard Thompson, The Watersons, Maddy Prior, Martin Carthy etc.etc.It's got lots of stuff I hadn't heard before ( unusual when you see how many folk cd's I've got) and is really good.Cyril Tawney's The Bold Benjamin and A.L Lloyd's Drunken Maidens stand out for me. It's on Topic Records and well worth the listening to.

Currently on mine is the Chris Barber Band live at the BP Studenthaaus recorded in 1996 when the 1954 band reformed for a 40th anniversary tour including a certain Mr Donegan. More folkie is another recent purchase: Davey Graham: Folk blues and beyond reissue, recommended by Mr Fielding.
..and for Celtic then Sorcha Dorcha, Ballad of Am Diallou etc.,available from Larry the Plugster(InObu) is great stuff.

Get some old stuff that's now on CD, like Pete Seeger's Children's Concert at Town Hall, or Cisco Houston sings Woody Guthrie, or any Weavers, or something to play to the baby... might as well start the lad off right, right?

I can't get music onto my CD player these days, since all I have is the computer CD drive and my twins got some cd games for $mas and now Toy Story Activity Centers are what tend to be on mine!

Just moved on from "English Country Music" Topic TSCD607, via "Classic Folk Fiddle" Wooded Hill HILLCD24, to "Song of the Road" Topic TSCD802.

The first's a collection of recordings made in the Bulwers' cottage in Shipdham, Norfolk from 1965. Second's a variety of good folk fiddling. Next is one of the BBC "Radio Ballads" written & produced by Ewan MacColl in the early '60s.

All worth the mony!

Cheers!
Ian

Well, last night I put on Ricky Skaggs' "Bluegrass Rules," mostly to listen to Brian Sutton's guitar breaks. I still think he's lying. That stuff can't be done on the guitar.

Then I listened to Tom Russell's "The Man From God Knows Where," for about the thousandth of what will eventually be quite a few thousand times.

Peter.

I was thinking of starting a thread today about what is currently in the 6 pack in the trunk of my car. I just re-organized my Cd's the other day and loaded some I haven't listened to in awhile. It struck me that my musical tastes may be too diverse, bordering on outright weird. Rick's post comforted me though. Here's what's in there now.

The Velevet Underground from their box set,

Jimi Hendrix, Live at the Fillmore

Robert Johnson, Disc II of the Complete recordings,

Johnny Winter And, Live

Hank Williams, Disc two from the Singles Box

Roy Acuff's Greatest hits.

Okay. It looks like I I'm in the good company with those who have the more eclectic tastes.

Currently in the 2nd 'pooter CDROM drive is the soundtrack CD for Babylon 5. (amazing to dance to!)(The first CDROM drive has the game disc for Age of empires II--The Conquerors permanently installed)

In the boom box is Beethoven's ninth. (I prefer the Emperotr suite but it's not here with me atm.

Those that get shuttled between the boombox and the CD player in "Beep the Jeep" are:

John Renbourn Ship of Fools

Phoebe Snow Phoebe Snow

Van Morrison Moon Dance (I think that's the title)

James Taylor James Taylor's Greatest Hits

Don Bray decisions (An Orillia folkie, as some of you know)

Mose Scarlett (can't remember the title, but it has "The Moon Is a Silver Dollar", "My Walkin' Cane", and ends withthe delightful "Hobo's Lullaby")

CSNY's latest Looking Forward

Doc Watson Song For Little Pickers

Rush Hold Your Fire

Beatles Anthology

The Pokemon Movie soundtrack (never saw the movie, but the soundtrack is fun to dance to)

What a mix, eh?

Funny you should ask........
Jim bought me three for my birthday; The Ballad of John Axon, another radio ballads- I've nearly got them all now. Rags, Reels and Airs, by Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy and Diz Disley, because the vinyl had got so bad I couldn't hear the tunes, and "Galore" the best of Kirsty MacColl. I treated myself to Eva Cassidy yesterday, the "Songbird" one.
The CD player packed up today, so I'm playing them on the PC. "Grim Fandango" will have to wait!!!
Cheers, Bron.

Funny you should ask right at this moment !?

The mail just arrived with a CD of U. Utah Phillips #77 LOAFER'S GLORY radio show in which Bruce used interview tape recordings I made in 1961 of the 93 year old Wobbly (I.W.W. union member) PAUL DURST. I just heard it the first time and I've got tears in my eyes. That's for real. I've always known it was a valuable interview, but Mr. Phillips used tapes of friends of his doing ths songs Paul sang interspersed with the actual captured dialoge and song snippets of Paul Durst singing and fiddling. It was obviously a labor of love for Utah and I'm honored by his attention to those long ago interviews I did with this historically important gentleman when I was 20 years old. If you go to a U. Utah Phillips site, I'm sure you can hear it too. If it's not archived there yet, I'm sure it will be soon.

All the best,

Art Thieme

I'm not making a statement, just trying to be funny.

At work they have given me a computer with a 14 GB and hooked me into a LAN where I am to deposit all my files. So here I sit with 14 useless GB. What should I do?

Now my CD collection resides there and entertains me all day long. I set Windows Media Player on All Audio, Sort the list by alphabet, hit shuffle and play. There's no predicting what will come up next and it's all good.

I would have a tough time picking out a favorite. On my CD player at home right now is Tom Waits, Nighthawks At The Diner, the Roll & Go Semi-CD Outward Bound, and Christopher Shaw's Adirondack.

Naemanson, you're slow today. "What's on your mind." Answer: "Well there's some bone, then some skin, then it goes straight to a hat." Or, less literally: "Georgia."

I have Norma Waterson in there now. Roy Harris was in there before Norma, and I think NexTradition was there before Roy. And I can't find my Johnson Girls CD, or that would have been in the list somewhere.

Just came back from NTIF where I got a fix:

MacAlias - Highwired Two British ladies with amazing harmony and playing. "Wild West Romance" is a waltz time tune whose intertwined playing and harmonies had the car CD on repeat for about 100 miles of I-35 traffic jams. "John C. Clark" is an amazing song about 'real' love.

Brian McNeill - Back of the North Wind I happen to think this is McNeill's best CD so far. I've had the distinct pleasure of hearing the man live three times and he just keeps getting better.

Marc Cohn - I can't seem to get him OFF my turntable!

Ed Miller - Scottish Songs and none too Serious. This was recorded at Austin's own Cactus Cafe. I've heard it enough to know most of the lyrics and I still listen whenever I need to cheer up.

Jed Marum - Streets of Fall River. For those of you who don't know, Jed's a 'catter. I didn't get to hear him at NTIF, but his CD is good enough to make me want to brave I-35 one more time just to catch one of his Dallas gigs.

Cry Cry Cry - Okay, I can't seem to get past Track 2, Richard Shindell's version of "Cold Missouri Waters", but really, the rest of the collection is good, too. At least, I think it is.

Well, if the bratling isn't playing Sesame St, I've got Alice Cooper on the computer.

Downstairs it's the Best of Queen I, II & III, boxed set. Well the cassettes died....

Otherwise, it's been the New Electric Muse - story of folk into rock.... previously it was the Mikado. Am I weird or what?

Liz, Is "The New Electric Muse" a CD issue of the old LP set "Electric Muse (The Story of Folk Into Rock)" with everybody from The Chieftains to Traffic? Didn't know it was available on CD.

Mark Clark,

I didn't mean to imply that you could order a CD of that radio show because you can't. But you can hear it for free at various sites that have back issues of LOAFER'S GLORY radio shows. (This show was Number 77)

A friend of Utah's just wanted me to have a copy of the show so he burned a CD for me.

Gandydancers - a cracking string band from West Virginia with Dave Bing and Gerry Milnes on fiddle, Ron Mullenex on banjo, Mark Payne on guitar and Jim Martin on bass. We just had them at the Gainsborough Old Time festival, and they knocked everybody out, and I've been playing the CD ever since. Lots of good old tunes and some lovely harmony singing as well - Piney Mountain is a really moving acapella song about the rundown of a logging industry, and its effect on a worker - sends shivers up my back every time I hear it, which is often.

Cheers
Ray

Hey all, I've got a 24-disc changer I inherited from my dad when he upgraded to a 200-discer a while back. Being a blues guitarist I leave the first 20 slots stocked with country blues masters like Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Miss. Fred McDowell, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon, Leadbelly, Mance Lipscomb, Robert Pete Williams to name a few. But the last four slots are for circulating discs and here are some of its usual tenants: Bob Dylan: from "Bob Dylan" to "Blonde on Blonde" Woody Guthrie: "Asch recordings Vols. 1 & 2 Ramblin' Jack Elliot: "The Essential..." (Vanguard) Odetta: "The Essential..." (Vanguard) Koerner, Ray, and Glover: "Blues, Rags, and Hollers" and "Lots More Blues,..." Lightnin' Hopkins: "Lightnin' Hopkins" (Smithsonian) Rev. Gary Davis: "Pure Religion and Bad Company" (Smithsonian) Miss. John Hurt: "Best of..." (Vanguard) Dave Van Ronk: "Inside Dave Van Ronk" (Fantasy)

Anyone else share similar?

"The NexTradition" - Alison Kelley and Ken Schatz. Riveting performances of traditional material. Incredible. I play this CD over and over, and take my commute to work with "Byker Hill" and "Sinnerman" running through my head.

"The Temptations Sing Smokey." Another one that gets inside of me, and has me singing "My Girl" and "The Way You Do The Things You Do" to myself. Their legendary 1st album, and what a great soul singer David Ruffin was!

"Nimrod" -a CD by the Berkeley rock band "Green Day." The song, "The Time Of Your Life" is a treasure. IMHO, one of the finest rock songs to come around in a long time. Another one that's gotten alot of time on my CD player lately.

I can't believe it! Chanteyranger likes Green Day! California punk YEAH!! Nimrod also has "Hitching A Ride" and "Redundant" which are favorites of mine to play. Have you heard the new album, Warning? It's more of a happy, pop-punk kind of sound. And a lot of it is very folky-sounding. "Minority" even has accordions and folk-like acoustic flatpicking. Check it out. And what could be more of a folkie anthem?

This probably wants its own thread but I'm in a hurry: Louis Prima was, in his time, HUGE. (Never mind what Nick Tosches says, though I suppose it agrees, in a way...) He was a cultural presence deserving of a musical Master's Thesis. Plus, he wrote "Sing, Sing, Sing".

Get on the web NOW & beg, borrow, or buy anything you can find by Tommy Emmanuel, the best guitarist this old gray haired guitar picker ever heard, & I've heard most of 'em! He is from Australia, there are at least 2 websites for him, and his cd's are rare & hard to find but well worth it. Even moreso his performances. You can catch him this coming Sept at the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield, Kansas, USA. There the paid performers will line up around the stage to hear him! I especially love the albumn he made with his hero, Chet Atkins-the track "Ode to Mel Bay". Happy hunting!

Hello folks, I have always had fun buying new albums/cds. I can not wait to get them open and read the liner notes to begin enjoying the purchase before I can get to my stereo to really soak it up. The experiences that bring the greatest pleasure often involve the purchase of a recording where I know a bit about the band and think I would like it ...... but I don't know. I just had the good fortune to go to Elderly instruments, and among the items I got were The String Cheese Incident - Carnival '99, Leftover Salmon - The Nashville Sessions, and The David Grisman Quintet - DGQ 20.

I was confident in the DGQ 20 choice, and yes it is incredible. SCI and LoS I was not sure. Oh my God.

"What is in my cd player?" I would have to say "joy and inspiration."

A fine layer of dust. Oddly enough I barely ever listen to recorded music these days. I play a certain amount of music myself and go to the odd live performance by others, but I don't listen to recorded music.

Why? I honest to God don't know. It doesn't seem to matter like it used to. It used to matter a lot, but not anymore.

I guess I could say that: "Things Have Changed"

I have listened a number of times to a meditation tape recently, but that was for purposes of meditating...which is a little different.

LH, I have a possibly related problem with recorded music: Once I've seen the musician/s perform live, especially if they were really good, I tend to ignore their cds. So it seems that I listen to the music of a lot of dead people, and people who don't tour outside Kazakhstan much...

This week, the cds I've had in my cd player: Nick Cave, "No More Shall We Part"; Maria Kalaniemi, self titled cd from 1992; "Setu Songs," a Finnish release of songs from Setuland; Sacred Reich, "Independent"; "Het daghet inden Oosten," a collection of bagpipe music from the Netherlands; Kokomo Arnold, "Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1 (1930-1935)"; Trip Shakespeare, "Are you Shakespearienced?"; Supernova, "Ages 3 & Up"; and Motörhead, "Bomber."

He celebrates the flute/fiddle combination by recording with eight fiddlers, each fiddler on two or more sets of tunes with him, (a sort of Irish trad version of the Sinatra "duets" recording!) including a great, great track of Crawford, Tommy Peoples, and Arty McGlynn on guitar.

I am listening to Clarence 'Tom' Ashley 'Greenback Dollar: The Music of Clarence 'Tom' Ashley 1929-33' County CO-CD-3520. The back cover has a note: 'An outstanding collection of pre-war recordings by the legendary old-time musician Clarence 'Tom' Ashley'. 'Outstanding' is an understatement. Given the unwritten law of the reissue business - that the very best will disappear more quickly than one could possibly comprehend - anyone interested in old-timey, 'white tradition' blues or early commercial recordings of folk performances should grab this while it is available.

Friends round for lunch on Sunday. I played an early Nat King Cole while we were waiting for them all to turn up. Followed by Bert Jansch "Live in Glasgow/Young Man's Blues" followed by Davey Graham "Folk Blues and Beyond" followed by Best of Miss. John Hurt followed by an early Lena Horne. I then asked for requests ( I was on the post lunch Metaxas by then and feeling mellow!) and a little skiffle was asked for (honest, no arm twisting!)so I put on the 2-CD Disky "Skiffle- as good as it gets" compilation with the forgotten bands like Les Hobeaux and the Original Barnstormers.
Incidentally, one of my friends said he'd been trying to find lyrics to Life gets tedious and Four Legged friend and was most impressed when I went up to the old non-networked PC and ran him off a copy of both which I'd got from discussions here. He now has a list of this and other lyrics sites!
He looked at the Handful of Songs lyric we'd been puzzlingover recently and thinks it's OK. He couldn't add to Gossie Goosei though!

now that I've moved my player from the depths of my cabinet, almost behind a side table, I can SEE the buttons! & no longer have to get into a contorted position (no good for my back & other sore bits) I'm playing more music.

Recent CDs - some Fine Art from Art Thieme, Jim Brannigan ('Catter JimLad), local friends Collector (traditional Australian), another friend Bruce Watson & his friends with Unsung Heroes of Australian History, Short Sharp Shanties vol 1 - yet another friend is ordering us copies of vols 2 & 3.

Life is sooo much better with a CD player beside my left elbow. And the shelf that contained the player & speakers is now home to around 2 years worth (over 2 ft wide!) of unsorted CDs. I really must sort them some time.

Great voice and perfect phrasing.

For the last 3.5 months Fay Hield's Orfeo has been more often in my CD player than outside of it.

In the last weeks she has been joined by the Fellside re-issue of Peter Bellamy Sings the Barrack-Room Ballads of Rudyard Kipling and by The Very Best of Stan Rogers.

Current Top 5:

Naragonia Quartet - 'Batiska'
Flemish band playing gorgeous multi-instrumental dance music, just makes you want to dance wherever I'm listening to it. Just fab.

Gilles Le Bigot - 'Empreintes #2'
Great performances from Marthe Vassallo (singer) and Gilles le Bigot (guitar), but the real attraction for me is the God-like genius that is Jean-Michel Veillon on flute, especially when duetting with soprano saxophonist Ludovic Mesnil ...

The Old Dance School 'Chasing The Light'
Widescreen cinematic loveliness from the Birmingham septet. Again, worth the price of admission just for the interplay between the low whistle and trumpet.

Calum Stewart & Heikki Bourgault 'Calum Stewart & Heikki Bourgault'
Full-on flute from Calum Stewart playing bourrees, polskas, an dros, and the occasional reel, with great accompaniment on guitar and cittern from Heikki Bourgault. The best new flautist I've discovered in many a year.

Penguin Cafe - A Matter Of Life ...
Minimalist but warm, serial but organic, I'm just so pleased to have the Penguin Cafe back in action, and there's some stuff on here every bit as good as the classic PCO repertoire.

Four slots in the Bose, one in the main unit, three in the CD changer.

All four slots are currently loaded with Baltimore Consort CDs.

Great stuff! I heard them here in Seattle a couple of years ago, and I've heard they're coming back! December 14th, this year, at Seattle's Town Hall.

In the car a double CD (one at a time) of other people singing Bob Dylan songs in honour of his 70th birthday. Can't say I'm impressed. Only track I've played several times is Its Not Dark Yet sung by a guy with a Wandering Star voice and I keep trying to remember to check who he is. Mostly I'd much rather hear the Dylan original but the car won't even play cassettes never mind 7" reel to reels.

Honestly?

Some of the raw recordings for the The wife's new album. All trad and all Scottish - Anarchie Gordon, something in Gaelic I can't spell, Banks of Fordie, Slaves Lament (OK Burns not Trad, but lovely all the same) etc, etc. Just her a'cappella or with her guitar (or bouzouki). I think most of the tracks will probably stay like that as well.

Apart from that a stunning album from Lucy Pringle & Chris wright ..... covers pretty much the same territory as above.

Has Wendy been feeding me Tartan Pills I wonder?
