Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: mousethief Date: 21 Mar 01 - 10:54 AM It don't sound painful, it just looks painful. It's pronounced CO-burn. The "ck" is silent, you see. Don't ask me why; I think it's a Canadian thing. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Mar 01 - 11:33 AM Why not make all the letters silent and pronounce it Ja-Blon-Ski? That'd solve a lot of problems. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: Fortunato Date: 21 Mar 01 - 11:50 AM Thanks, Steve, Unlike SOME PEOPLE I appreciate the info. And I for one shall refrain from comments best described as 'ill-advised' with reference to Mr. Cockburn's name. I love it when I can take the high ground. Of course there's so little competition for it around here! puissantly yours |
Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: mousethief Date: 21 Mar 01 - 12:33 PM Fortunato, please be advised that some people LOVE Mr. Cockburn's music, but are unable to watch the CBC special due to not having access to CBC. Some people have all his released studio albums, most of them in BOTH vinyl and acrylic, as well as several hard-to-find items. Some people have seen him in concert more times than they can count, and have spoken with him after the concert more than once and found him to be a charming and humble man. And STILL don't have anally-fitted batons. People see through you. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: mousethief Date: 21 Mar 01 - 01:24 PM It's fun when you casually call that Springsteen fellow "the other Bruce." People wonder who could be more important in the Bruce department. BW, I'm told REAL fans call him "Brooce." |

Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: Mooh Date: 22 Mar 01 - 10:12 AM Saw Cockburn once at the Stratford Festival Theatre, which may be the best concert hall in this part of the world, and the sound, performance, and vibe was perfect. Saw him again a couple of years ago at a labour rally in Toronto. He went on solo, with lousy PA gear and still sounded inspired and committed, saying some inspirational words as he left. He was interviewed on "Open Mike" with Mike Bullard just the other day. He was quite personable, even as Bullard is inclined sometimes to be irritating. It took me a while to learn to like him, but by the time of "When a Tree Falls" I was hooked. He's an inventive and inspired player/writer/performer. We're lucky to have him. I like musicians who escape stagnation, it's a gift. Peace. Mooh.

Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: Fortunato Date: 22 Mar 01 - 11:15 AM Uh, sorry, I was trying to be funny and missed with my previous post. I didn't mean to insult or demean anyone, just a silly, off the cuff posting. I apologize Mousethief and 'spaw. Perhaps my latent hostility is showing again. apologies, Fortunato |
Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: black walnut Date: 22 Mar 01 - 11:50 AM You at the Stratford concert, too, Mooh? Are you talking about the one about, oh, maybe, 15 or 20 years ago? That was GREAT! A more recent absolutely tremendous performance was a solo concert at the University of Waterloo Humanities Theatre. It was exquisite. I've seen Bruce MANY times live, and the only place I didn't like was at Hillside Festival a couple of years ago....it wasn't his fault.....the sound system was horrendously echoey; his guitar and his voice arrived a beat apart. At first, I thought he was just freshening up some old repertoire with some sort of syncopation game, but nope, it was the sound system. Did I ever mention that I got to talk to Bruce for a while on the staircase of Mountain Equipment Co-op.... ~black walnut |
Subject: RE: Bruce Cockburn Special on CBC TV From: Mooh Date: 22 Mar 01 - 09:35 PM Black Walnut. Yup, I was there with my wife who hadn't seen that sort of act before, and she was blown away. My sister worked for the theatre back then and was always able to get good seats. We also saw Oscar Peterson there, solo, no PA...incredible! Another hall I like is Convocation Hall at U of Toronto, designed in the days before electricity when the lecturer had to use his own voice to fill the room without help. Saw Buddy Guy there a few years ago and the sound was so good there was nothing to improve. Peace. Mooh. |
