As someone pointed out to me in a previous thread it is all a question of taste. I and my 17 year old daughter think the Hearsay version of Bridge over Troubled water is "a pile of poopy pants" (her words) Kate feels different . When I heard Eva Cassidy singing "Somewhere over the rainbow" I had exactly the reaction that Sam had to this song-Why has someone chosen to ruin a good song?but that is only MY opinion.I would never stop anyone singing anything so long as I can choose whether to listen or not.

Jeff Buckley doing 'Lilac Wine', or for that matter 'Hallelujah', or even the MC5's 'Kick out the Jam's'. Say no more.

But, back to the old Popstars, I know what you're saying, Sam, it IS quite gospelly. (Am I about to be shunned by everyone I know...)
HOWEVER, I must say that when the 'Dropstars' (the rejects) did it on News at Ten, they were more in tune...

You'd never know it from their remake of "Last Kiss," Fib. Now don't beat me up. I love "Woman behind the counter in a small town" (forget the exact title) and it suits his -- um -- tentative voice very well. "Last Kiss" is just painful.

I hear what you are all saying .......BUT
whatever it sounds like and whatever anybody thinks of the manufacturing of a band, at least they are singing a decent song, not a pile of repetitive rubbish that means nothing, and keeping the tradition alive - after all who's to say Robert Burns isn't turning in his grave at the renditions that some of his songs get for example.
The beauty of a living tradition is that it lives, breathes and moves on, the best in your eyes may be the worst in anothers, and for the kiddie generation this IS the first time they have heard it and when they hear Simon and Garfunkel's version will screw their noses and say I like it the way HearSay do it - We are probably all guilty of that, having heard a version and learned it, it is difficult to re-learn another version - and easy to prefer the one we learned!
Just a thought or two from an old traditionalist!

I know what you mean about trying to re-do an original that can't be bettered. I feel the same about a lot of Sandy Denny's songs...

And did you hear whatsisname 'singing' Will ye go, lassie, go to who'sit at their wedding on Neighbours the other day?????

Hi All

I realise I may be putting my life on the line by discussing such a manfactured pop band as 'hear say'.

For those that don't know they are a manufactured pop band who have come about due to a show in the UK called popstars, that really made me realise how lucky I was to be a 'folky', you know I really did feel proud the talent in the folk scene is huge!!

Anyway this band (or co-operative may be a better word!!) have brought out their debut single and the second song on it is 'Bridge over troubled water'!!!

How on earth can such a fake band sing such a good song with SUCH A GOOD ORGINAL VERSION. I have heard their version I am am afraid to report to all simon & Garfuncle fans they have recked it. Some things just should be left as a matter of respect. Why try and cover the orginal and best version at all???? Write your own material, be original I don't know, yes I do listen to folk music and discover real music with feeling, emotions, originality & catters.......oh and the original version of 'Bridge over troubled water'!!

Surely there are more catters that can see where I am coming from?...............are there?.......anyone?
