Subject: RE: Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby ? From: harpgirl Date: 07 Dec 01 - 10:34 AM In "Down From The Mountain" Gillian Welch describes it as halfway between a "field holler" and a lullaby. I thought it was a great field holler. |
Subject: RE: Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby ? From: lamarca Date: 07 Dec 01 - 09:52 AM There's another nice recording of this on the Lomax collection Deep River of Song: Alabama , sung by Harriet McClintock. Sandy Paton recommended this collection to me because of the wealth of songs sung by Vera Ward Hall on it - it's great! Here's a link to Rounder's track listing for the CD. |
Subject: RE: Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby ? From: mousethief Date: 06 Dec 01 - 03:58 PM There's something in the background with an eerie sound to it. It sounds to me like an electric guitar with some crazy effects pedals, but you're right, it could be a saw. Alex |
Subject: RE: Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby ? From: pattyClink Date: 06 Dec 01 - 03:55 PM As long as this song is on the stove, I've been wondering. Is there a musical SAW in the background on the soundtrack recording? 'swhat it sounds like. Am I nuts? Sorcha, those words sound like a match with the movie. Thanks for posting. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DIDN'T LEAVE NOBODY BUT THE BABY From: Sorcha Date: 05 Dec 01 - 08:22 PM Not sure if this is the same as in the movie, but here they are:
DIDN'T LEAVE NOBODY BUT THE BABY
Go to sleep you little baby
You're a sweet little baby
Don't you weep pretty baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby |
Subject: RE: Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby ? From: Giac Date: 23 Mar 01 - 07:16 PM The booklet that comes with the CD says: Arrangement by Alan Lomax, Mrs. Sidney Carter, Gillian Welch and T Bone Burnett, Additional lyrics by Gillian Welch and T Bone Burnett.
Further info in the booklet says the song is "an elaboration of the old black folk lullabye..." Haven't seen the movie, but I sure like the soundtrack.

From: GUEST,~just jess~ Date: 23 Mar 01 - 06:14 PM I'm looking for the lyrics to "Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby", from the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. I don't know if it's actually and old piece of music or just newly created with an old sound... Anyone have a clue? Gotta love that a cappella! ~just jess~ technoboggan@uswest.net See discussion in this thread (click) |
