Subject: New musical discoveries! Tell us... From: Willie-O Date: 25 Mar 01 - 09:39 AM Have you discovered any new musicians, or recordings, that you want to tell the Cat about? Here's a couple. They're on my mp3.com links page I got a nice note from an mp3.com duo a few weeks ago saying they liked my mp3s and inviting me to check out theirs. So I had a look at Syren 13. My initial reaction was, anh, they're way too cute to be good, and they're playing that old chestnut, "Do You Love An Apple" (OK, that's a mixed metaphor...) but i gave it a listen...hoo boy was I wrong. Can these girls ever harmonize, and the accompaniment is just the kind of tasteful understatement that true folkies adore... listen for yourself. Another great collection of Celtic work is at the site of my friends Nathan Curry and Linda Miller. Nathan's been a major musical mentor of mine (MMMoM) for over twenty years (yikes) and it's great to see Nathan and Linda starting to focus on their duo performance...the long awaited new CD has to be coming someday...right? One other band, which gets relatively little attention for some reason, is Us3, a young, innovative instrumental group from the Scottish Borders. Those are my suggestions for a Sunday morning websurf. What are yours? Willie-O

Subject: RE: New musical discoveries! Tell us... From: katlaughing Date: 25 Mar 01 - 10:03 AM Had a blast last night in the Paltalk room called Aussie stories, song, poetry, etc. Some live, some canned, but ALL the people were very nice, very appreciative, esp. since I did "live" and some of them were really great poets and singers. I did the usual Mudcat Ambassadorial bit, so we may see some of them in here, soon, I hope! The other newest is a cd I just got from Camsco, which I just did a thread about a few days ago. Camsco is in teh name of it, so a search will find it quickly. I'll put alink in in a few. |

Subject: RE: New musical discoveries! Tell us... From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Mar 01 - 10:20 AM I just started a thread about this week's Austin City Limits show that features Dolly Parton and a group you have to hear to believe named "Nickel Creek." I gues they maight be called Newgrass, but some of finest young musicians with talent, originality, creativity........FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! They did an up tempo version of "The Fox" and in the middle threw in a verse of "Subterranean Homesick Blues." I dunno' how I've missed them this far, but I will be hearing a lot more of them in the future! Spaw |

Subject: RE: New musical discoveries! Tell us... From: Willie-O Date: 25 Mar 01 - 10:58 AM hmmm, we had a show here the other night by a local "polyrhythmic world-folk" band called The Ragged Flowers...their final song seemed like a reworking of something--which became obvious when they dropped in a verbatim section of "Whole Lotta Love" in the middle...which caused all the teenagers in the audience to go "what the hell is that about? and why are all the 40-somethings cracking up?"
