Subject: Lyric search From: Paulco Date: 06 Nov 97 - 03:55 AM Hi all, I'm searching for the lyrics to an Irish Republican song. The only lyrics I can remember are as follows: May they rest in peace, those men who died for Ireland, In the lonely woods at Upton [I think ][for Sinn Fein?] Thanks, Paulco. |
Subject: RE: Lyric search From: Wolfgang Hell Date: 06 Nov 97 - 04:23 AM That could be "(The) Upton ambush" a song for which I'd love to have the lyrics too. Wolfgang |
Subject: Lyr Add: UPTON AMBUSH From: Gene Date: 06 Nov 97 - 08:15 PM Many homes are filled with sorrow and with sadness Many hearts are filled with anguish and with pain For old Ireland now she hangs her head in morning For the men who fell at Upton for Sinn Fein. Let the moon shine to-night along the valley Where those men who fought for freedom now are laid May they rest in peace those men who died for Ireland And who fell at Upton Ambush for Sinn Fein. Some were thinking of their mothers, wives and sweethearts More were thinking of their dear old Irish homes Do they think of how they drilled along the valley Or when they marched out from Cork City to their doom. The morning cry rang out: "Fix bayonets!" And the gallant lads, they fixed them for the fray Gallantly they fought and died for Ireland Around the lonely woods at Upton far away. Subject: RE: Lyric search From: Wolfgang Date: 11 Nov 97 - 07:12 AM I guess it should be "warning cry" instead of "morning cry" in the last verse. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyric search From: Gene Date: 11 Nov 97 - 11:31 AM Could be, but the verse reads: The morning cry......(was the battle fought in the morning?) |

Subject: RE: Lyric search From: M'Carthy Date: 15 Nov 97 - 08:43 PM "The Minstral Boy to the War has Gone" |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE MINSTREL BOY From: O'Kelly Date: 15 Nov 97 - 09:04 PM To M'Carthy: A slight spelling variation generates results. THE MINSTREL BOY The Minstrel Boy to the war has gone, In the ranks of death you'll find him. His father's sword he has girded on, And his wild harp slung behind him. "Land of Song!" said the warrior bard, "Though all the world betrays thee, One sword at least, thy rights shall guard, One faithful harp shall praise thee!" The minstrel fell! -- but the foeman's chain Could not bring his proud soul under; The harp he loved ne'er spoke again, For he tore its cords asunder; And said, "No chains shall sully thee, Thou soul of love and bravery! Thy songs were made for the pure and free, They shall never sound in slavery!" |

Subject: RE: Lyric search From: atcarter@db1.cc.rochester.edu Date: 17 Dec 97 - 11:39 AM I'm looking for the title and lyrics of a song my (deceased) father sang when I was a child. As I recall, the song concerns a man who goes out for a walk without his dogs. The man is treed by a bear and calls the dogs to come and save him. The chorus includes the phrase "Your master's almost gone." I believe one of the dogs is named Pampoo. My father was born in Kentucky and I imagine that the song is Appalachian. Does anyone out there know it? Cheers, A. Carter |
Subject: RE: Lyric search From: Jon W. Date: 17 Dec 97 - 12:45 PM While I'm doing my good deeds for the day I'll go ahead and repost the above two requests in separate threads where more people will see them. I'm going to close this thread to attempt to reduce confusion. Please discuss individual songs in thread titled with the name of the song. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
