Subject: Rosie From: Bugsy Date: 27 Mar 01 - 11:46 PM Does anyone have the lyrics to this song recorded in the 60's by English busker Don Partridge. The tune has been going round in my head for years but I cannot remember any of the words. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: DonMeixner Date: 27 Mar 01 - 11:58 PM "They say her name is Rosie, she lives outside of town, Rosies' very old now, her house is tumbling down." If thats the song, I believe its a Tommy Makem tune. At least thats what the bass player says but can a bass player be trusted? Don |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: Bugsy Date: 28 Mar 01 - 12:10 AM No that's not the one. It was definitely written and recorded by Don Partridge. He was originally a busker in London until he was "discovered" by Eamonn Andrews, a "TV Personality". Cheers Bugsy

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: DonMeixner Date: 28 Mar 01 - 12:18 AM Bugsy, Down load the Google search engine and type in Don Partridge, there is several entries re: Don Partridge, sites that have his poetry, a listing of albums. Abbey Records had Rosie listed as available still. Don |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: Lanfranc Date: 28 Mar 01 - 04:07 AM Again the Francis archive of obscure songs comes to the rescue. I even have the sheet music to this one! If it doesn't come up in Google, I'll post it or, if PM'd, fax the dots.

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: Kernow John Date: 28 Mar 01 - 05:29 AM I used to run a folk club with a friend in Leyton in the 60s. One night I met Don in Oxford street and offered him a gig at the club. The week before the booking the Eamonn Andrews discovery happened, Don honoured the booking at the agreed measly sum and the club sold out we even had to borrow extra chairs from the local scouts. My friend bought his first used car (a Ford Anglia)on the proceeds. I sadly didn't see Don again for many years until bumping into him in Totnes in Devon. By this time he was really down in the depths. A great pity and a sad loss to the world of music and poetry. KJ |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: Lanfranc Date: 28 Mar 01 - 10:22 AM Well, the line breaks got through, but what happened to the tabs!! The chords are there, but not necessarily in the right places. Don played it in Bflat, so capo up 3 frets and play G as shown. Don played down the Troubadour a few times before fame and fortune (albeit temporary) struck. I seem to recall that apart from his own songs (Rosie and Blue Eyes) he did a mean version of San Francisco Bay Blues. Sad to hear it didn't bring him lasting happiness. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: Bugsy Date: 28 Mar 01 - 08:10 PM Thank you Lenfranc. Do you remember one he did called Going Back To London? That was a good one too. BTW, do you know what has happened to him in recent years. I never did meet him but was quite taken by his style of music and also the one man band bit. I know that he did go on a downward spiral so to speak, but would like to know where he is and what he's doing now. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: Brakn Date: 29 Mar 01 - 08:07 PM He had a couple of other single, Blue Eyes which did better in the charts than Rosie and one called Breakfast on Pluto that I don't remember at all. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie From: LR Mole Date: 19 Apr 01 - 09:37 AM He also did a movie theme called "Homeless Bones(The Lament of Gerard Arthur Ottley), from a movie called, appropriately, "Ottley", which I've never seen. Don't think it made it over the pond. I"ve got the album onn vinyl:a nice swinging version of "White, Brown and Black" and very funny liner notes. I saw him on the old Merv Griffin show, when but a lad. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: alanabit Date: 17 Sep 09 - 11:46 AM Don only ever wanted to be a busker. The fun for him was making the money and blowing it - not having it. He has not come down in the world, because he never did give a damn about big stages and glitzy lights. He has fun, is loved by all the other buskers and he has always been in love with what he does for a living. His drum used to declare the legend "Inter Galactic Lord of the Wide Open Spaces". His happiest times were probably those spent travelling with his mate, the gifted comedian Phil Free. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: GUEST,Simon Early Date: 25 Sep 10 - 05:28 AM Don died on 21st Sep 2010 from a suspected heart attack. His body was found by a dog walker. It is thought Don suferred a fatal heart attack whilst walking from his home in Peacehaven to Newhaven over the Downs (a route he was well familiar with as he used to go shopping then come into Seaford for a few beers at the Office Bar). He was a great guy - we all knew him well. We all had a busk with him on many occasions and he was the local genuine pop star. Sorely missed. simon |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: GUEST,Kate Date: 18 May 11 - 02:27 AM I was humming the tune Rosie and could only remember the last line, found this thread and thought it was amazing. Our beautiful pooch is called Rosie and I wanted to sing it to her. I remember the song (well not the words) and Don Partridge. He he had to be the best busker ever. I remember seeing him on TV a few times and he always left you feeling happy. Years have passed, sorry to hear he has gone now but his music is still going strong. Reckon he would have liked that. Thanks for all the interesting info, Kate |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 23 Jan 16 - 12:53 PM Can't help with that song but thought I'd contribute my memories of Don- he found fame via the Eamonn Andrews show in 1968- I remember that because I worked for Thames TV at Teddington at the time. I was also involved with the Marsden folk club in South Shields & well recall the night we had him booked for the Sunday night club. He was on 'Top of the Pops' on the Thursday as he was No 4 in the charts with 'Rosie' at the time but he did turn up for his £12 or whatever it was, having travelled many a mile to do it... Just as well as the queue was twice round the pub AT 7PM! Many years later (c2005?) I was at the Seaford folk club at the old 'Wellington' pub & was told Don was in the back bar. I was delighted to see him again- he said he didn't busk London any more- too much hassle up there, but he did busk the country towns like Horsham & Lewes.... I complimented him on having done the Marsden when he could have named his price at Newcastle City Hall that night... 'well, you was mates, wasn't you' he said- a comment which about sums up the kind of decent bloke he was...... RIP Don |

Subject: Don Partridge: music recordings 1964-2005 From: GUEST,Stewart Partridge (brother) Date: 16 Feb 17 - 08:15 PM Any fans of Don Partridge, I've updated his record on Wikipedia. Whilst he did have drink problems through the years, he actually played, busked, wrote and recorded up until shortly before his death in 2010. Before he became famous, in 1964/65 he made some great solo recordings of several British and Irish folk songs, and in 1966 recorded an album of British and US folk, gospel and blues songs with fellow busker Pat Keene as "The Brotherhood". His hits Rosie, Blue Eyes and Breakfast on Pluto followed in 1968/69, all with the one-man band. In 1969, after the Buskers' Albert Hall Concert and Tour of the UK, he founded folk-rock group Accolade together with guitarist Gordon Giltrap and others. They released a single and two albums (the second with Wizz Jones replacing Giltrap), and there is some great original stuff on those albums. Sometime after Accolade split up in 1971, Don founded a new group Slim Volume in Sweden, and toured with them. Later albums recorded in Sweden included "Don Partridge & Friends" (one side was a live show in Stockholm), "Street Harvest" (1982) and then in the UK "The Highwayman" (about 2002) and "Uncreased" (2005). Whilst most of his life was spent busking with one or other variant of his one man band, his recordings span a much wider range of styles and music. In total, he wrote about 45 original songs. Vocally, I believe that his best recordings were Nature Boy (1964 and 1970), Raggle Taggle Gypsies (1965), I Once Loved A Lass (1965), Blue Eyes (1968), Calico (1970), The Time I've Wasted (1971), Trans World Blues (1971), Foxy Little Girl (1982) and "The Highwayman" (2002). I am in the throes of collecting together many of the rights on his full portfolio of music and recordings, with a view to reissue those on new vinyl pressings, CD, MP3 and high-res downloads. A website has been registered, and should be brought live later this year. Just wanted you all to know that contrary to some early views in this stream, he did not waste away or fade away, but was active singing, composing and even touring for more than 40 years. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: GUEST,guest RickS Date: 17 Feb 17 - 06:15 AM Good to be reminded of Don P - I have very fond memories of him ( & sometimes Pat Keene ) performing in Reading folk clubs c'66; he was always great entertainment, & with a fund of funny old ( music-hall? ) songs - I recall one that went 'one leg up & one leg down, like an old cock-sparrow, flyin' over Piccadilly wiv me bow & arrow' - & also that groovy snakeskin jacket he wore.. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: vectis Date: 18 Feb 17 - 02:12 AM I got to know Don fairly well when I ran the Seaford Folk Club and he told me that Rosie was based on his mother. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: GUEST,Stewart Partridge Date: 20 Oct 17 - 07:23 PM Interesting comment, Vectis. I am his brother, and he never told me that - but that doesn't mean you are wrong. The main biographical song he wrote about his mother was "Elizabeth", recorded in Sweden as part of the "Street Harvest" album. It had a gypsy violin backing because our mother loved gypsy music. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: GUEST,Don Day Date: 21 Oct 17 - 09:39 AM I remember the weekend Jim Bainbridge was referring to in March 1968. Don played the folk club in Ryton on the Thursday at the same time as he was on Top of the Pops much to the confusion of the audience which was absolute capacity. They were even squinting through the frosted windows to see him. The following night we took him to do his booking at Ashington where there was an enormous queue. Don took out his guitar and busked the queue from which he took ?17. That was ?2 more than his fee of ?15. He said he could never resist a queue. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Rosie (Don Partridge) From: John MacKenzie Date: 25 Jan 19 - 03:58 PM I knew Don from seeing and meeting him in Les Cousins and other salubrious London spots. When I ran the Coach and Horses on Kew Green in the late 60's I booked him, and the week he appeared, Rosie was No 3 in the charts. Well I never had such a big audience before, or since, and I made so much money that I paid him more than the agreed fee. he was a lovely bloke. Quite a change from some nights, when I had to dip my hand in my own pocket to pay the guest. |
