Subject: What are you, really?
From: Jim the Bart
Date: 28 Mar 01 - 09:52 AM

Everyone wears many hats in life. Some you take on, some are placed upon you. Very few of us get to fill the role in life which we consider to be our own.

Many of us would prefer a life centered around the music; that's why we come here to the Mudcat. I would be willing to wager that very few of us actually work as musicians, composers, conductors, recording engineers or any of the myriad professions connected with music in this age.

So my question is simple: Regardless of what you do for a living, in your heart of hearts, what do you consider yourself to be?

I am a musician and philosopher (note that I didn't say you had to be good at the thing you consider yourself to be). I pay my way as a software trainer, but my passion lies in exploring how the world works, through music. When faced with a serious life choice, everything else must allow for that.

There, I have confessed. I will never be as committed to software training as I am to the music. Now it's your turn.

What are you, really?

Unfortunately, in reality.....

A wild child , a nymph of the wood, living wild and free , a precocious intellect and wit, the voice of an angel The demon analyst who can help any one overcome their problems ( Computer that is)

in reality

a 37 year old pragmitist who worries ( the family say overworries) and who has to practice spontenaity. Defined by the absolute horror that is the state of my house and the feeling that somewhere I'm letting someone down. The solo sing marred by a tendancy to shake from a place deep in the depth of me and an inability to remember all my own words ( Although I remember every one else). Actually sometimes the job's not far off and I have to admit , if it was just slightly more intellectually challenging just some of the time. I do have a fairly sharp wit - but why do you always come up with the brilliant comeback ten minutes after you needed it.

A singer.

All I ever wanted to do was sing, for as long as I can remember. I wanted to be a rock star but you see how that turned out! ;-) It's not how I make my living, and it's not quite how I imagined it... but I am a singer. Sometimes I get paid in money, but the appreciation is a much greater wealth.

I think we find out what are the most important roles in our life by thinking about whether we would be essentially the same person if that role were gone.

I am a singer and a psychology researcher - both are equal parts of what makes me me. I couldnt stand it if I wasnt able to sing for some reason, but equally, I would hate to lose the academic and research side of me. If I couldn't do it as a job, I would do it as a hobby. Maybe one day I will swap and become a singer by profession and a hobbyist researcher. Then maybe I will find out if both those roles are the same to me.

So that's really been you all this time, huh, Mick? Does Heather know? Sure was great talking to you the other day when I called Caroline and Sandy. Wish'd I'd known it was really you! **BG**

I am a writer, have been ever since I can remember. I'd like to make more money at it, but lack the motivation to be aggressive enough for that. Besides which, one reader telling me how much they loved something I've written is worth more than any amount of money. ON the other hand, I would feel a lot less guilt if I were contributing more, financially, even though it is not asked of me.

My words, then my music and animals. That is who I am.

I love how Brits start sentences with "Right." It's so cute.

I'm a dad, a stepdad, a husband, a tonsured Reader, a parishioner, a believer, a sinner, a jerk, a poet, a songwriter, a singer, a guitar player, a cross-stitcher, a reader of various types of books, a collector of various types of books, a computer programmer-analyst, an employee, a son, a step-brother, an uncle, a cousin, a philosopher, a college graduate, a tall, pudgy, bald guy, a listener to various kinds of music, a driver, a cow-orker, a handyman, a shopper, a "consumer" (how I hate that term!), a human organism, a depressive, an ADHDer, a patient, an ex-husband, a male, one hell of a nice guy, and if you're still reading this you're far more persistent than I am.

Having no idea, I'd say a lot of folks view me as a real dimbulb jerk with a bizarre sense of humor. To that end, assuming you are not humor impaired, I would urge you to visit and play some games at what has zoomed to the top of my website list. Had enough of Elian Gonzalez yet? Try the "Deportation Game." Fed up with your kids watching Blue's Clues or Pokemon? Need some Easter cheer? Watch the Bunny lay colored eggs or make your own Chocolate Bunny....go for the Nougat filling. So if indeed you are a real sick fuck like me, check out Killfrog.Com.

Its a good question Bart, but at this stage of my life I'm simply a Dad...........and I embarass Michael a lot!

Right they're in now but still shouting so for the next few moments I shall be me winding down on the 'puter close enought to become Mummy again if needed. All day long I have been nose wiper, a psychoanalyst, a physiotherapist, an actor, a surrogate parent, a social worker, an arbitrator, an occasional punchbag, an administrator, a clerk, a legal adviser, a counsellor, a voice in the wilderness, an artist, a politician, a total wreck and hopefully at some point an educator. Later on this evening I might manage a short trip to the pub and become a musician/singer for a while before coming home and being a wife, a friend, a lover(unless called upon to be Mummy again!) Then I will close my eyes and in my dreams be me!

Malvina Reynolds had a poem once. Ah, it's over here in THE MUSE OF PARKER STREET:

You can't run away
No matter where you go.
The world isn't big enough
For you and yourself,
And everywhere, that YOU comes tagging along.

You can't run away
From the ones you love.
For they are you, too,
You are the sum of what they think of you,
And if you run
They wonder for a while,
And then you grow less and less with every mile.

Art Thieme: The banana is, of course, a penis, and the bagel is a faulty cervical cap. The tunnel is of course the tunnel of love. This has to do with your fear of birth control failing.

No?

Oh well, it was fun to type.

KimC: Yeah, I do cross-stitch. I tried knitting once, and just couldn't keep the tension right. So I gave it up. And yeah, I'm a seamster or whatever the word is for a man who sews. Sewer? Whatever. I was doing that long before I took up singing, though. I was on the "sailmaking" team in my Sea Explorer Ship, which meant that at Regattas (competitions analagous to camporees in boy scouts) we competed against other teams using big ol' ugly needles, a "palm" (device for pushing needles through canvas), heavy "stuff" (thread) and canvas, making 2 kinds of stitches and a grommet. We always won. We was good.

Kendall: spontaneously.

There's only one thing that I know how to do well
And I've often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that's be you, be what you're like,
Be like yourself

They Might Be Giants-"Whistling in the Dark."

That being said, at the end of the day, for all intents and purposes, to wit:

I am a rock.
I am an island.
I am a bold deciever.
I am a jolly shanty boy, as you shall soon discover

I am a bard of no regard.
I am me mother's darling.
I am a joker, a smoker, a midnight toker.
I am slain by a cruel fair maid.

I am Ned of the Hill.
I am but a spirit a-shining in blood.
I am a weaver, a Calton weaver, I am a brash and roving blade.
I am the bravest tinker that lives beneath the sun.

I am a little beggarman.
I am stretched on your grave.
I am a bold shoemaker from Belfast town I came.
I am a pore cowboy, I've got no home.

I am in sympathy with the miners.
I am a blind fiddler and far from my home.
I am king of the seas brave boys.
I am tired , I am weak, I am lost.

I am a young lover and sorely oppressed.
I am a man of constant sorrow.
I am a jolly driver of the Salt Lake City line.
I am a sad and lonely boy.

I am a driver on a western highway.
I am a poor boy too, I have no gift to bring.
I am one of many who expects a watery grave.
I am captain here and I will not fail.

Cheers, Bardford. Maybe I should be posting to the 'Wasting Time at Work' thread...

I've instructed my wife that on my gravestone is to be engraved, "A GENTLEMAN AND A SCHOLAR.....AND A LOVER."

A gentleman: One who, in the words of Oscar Wilde, never hurts anyone else's feelings--unintentionally.

A scholar: I'm an inveterate reader, an inquirer after how the world and human beings work. I read history and philosophy and biographies and autobiographies and novels and cereal boxes (almost anything I lay my hands on) with a desire to correlate it all.

A lover???? Not in the bedroom-athlete sense (only), and CERTAINLY not in the Don Juan sense, but in the sense of daily habitual tenderness and consideration and so forth. After thirty-seven years of marriage I think my Beautiful Wife will indeed put that third description on the stone.

Being a folksong singer and banjo and guitar player are important to me, but those three things on the stone are really who I hope I am.

I am, in my heart, a synthesist....one who is jack of many trades, and master of few. I studied Philosophy, but found even that to be not broad enough.

In a sci-fi novel I read once, there was this giant ship, sent from earth to colonize the stars...designed to survive hundreds of generations if nesessary...(hydroponics, databases...the works)...but all the specialization necessary to make a big ship run eventually created a society in which most individuals had little idea what their history was or what the relationship was between their job and and others.

So...this kid was born, who was a mis-fit...failed all the aptitude tests and seemed to be doomed to menial labor...but he explored, found secret places, discoved ancient texts,(you get the idea)..and LO! it was discovered that the 'planners' had forseen all this and planted stuff for just such a one to stumble onto so as to rekindle knowlege and forge lost bonds between the disciplines...a *synthesist*.......

...that's me.....in the meantime, until I'm called, I turn wood and kibitz.

Alex, ignoring the flames is a good philosophy in most instances, and I'm glad you want to live by that philosophy.

I think sometimes it can be helpful to put one neutral post in after a post like gargoyle's. Sometimes that seems to preempt some of the more inflamatory responses that posts like that one seem to get.

The key word here is neutral, containing no emotional content or inflamatory language of any kind. Not even sarcasm or irony.

I've been flamed a lot in the last week or so. I have responded as graciously as possible to some of them, and I have ignored others. Thankfully, this one was not aimed at me. Having flames aimed at you hurts, doesn't it?

I agree that in no instance is it constructive to respond to a flame with another flame or with any kind of emotional response. Thanks for your concern.

Carol

Kendal - practising spontenaity - every time an opportunity comes up try to suppress the little voice in the back of your head that goes - not enough money in the kitty, haven't orgainsed anything so can't do anything, have to do something much more important but boring. The longer you can suppress that voice the better you are at spontinety - I could be completely spontenaious ( is that a real word ?) if I didn't have to think about so many other things.

What I try and do - is organise days with nothing in - so I can go with the flow - usually nothing happens but occasionally it works

All the best

Kendall - I don't think that we do anything without thought, unless it's a purely physical reaction. I have similar views on the subject of intuition, which I know a lot of people disagree with me about. I do think that you can change how you react so that you do become more spontaneous. Its like knowing you can let yourself go in specific circumstances - so what looks like spontaneity to the outside is really the end of a considered thought process.

All jokes aside, I've loved this song for 30 years and it hits me where I live......a little more everyday.

I'm a dreamer by nature and I've always been Tryin' to dream myself out of this world that I'm in. In my dreams I escape all the troubles around. And it ain't cost a penny for the pleasures I've found.

CH: What is the part, that I play today? A beggar, a businessman, king for a day? I've played many the parts and I'm the first to agree, That I'm still looking round for the man that is me.

I'm a dreamer by nature and I've always been, Looking for something not there. My financial condition don't bother my dreams, 'Cause in fairy tale money I'm my own millionaire.

CH------

In my dreams I'm a rich man but in real life I've hid, From the fact that I got me a wife and a kid. If I lose what I got, well then they lose it too. Tell me what in this world's a poor dreamer to do?

CH-----End.

Well, I just got back from a tour through the rally course know as Moncton and I believe it was a 'Toucher in front of me for about eight intersections who was looking for the "right" street in a rather reckless manner. She NEVER used her signal light and I had to lock up all four the first time she decided to stop abruptly.

As for your question, are you talking about drivers in front of you, pedestrians, or other ?

BTW, is flattop from Bouctouche ? Maybe I should do a NB 'Cats thread to see who I can hook up with. Hranners are scarce around the Moncton area. Just located the only other one I know of in this area last week. We are jammin on the weekend and I can't wait.

Yes, I find the smaller the community, the more regard given to the pedestrian, and Bouctouche is no exception.

Pedestrians are, for the most part, well regarded here in Southern NB, even on the race courses in Moncton, but if you ever visit Moncton, don't take any chances because the average driver's intelligence doesn't seem to match the manners.

BTW, that moose you mentioned in the Spring thread was probably a cross-border shopper from NB. It seems so weird to me, being from the boglands, that some people have never seen moose or yotes or whatever. Guess I'm just lucky. Guess that's what I really am, just a good old backwoods boy.

Everything we are - everything we dare to be
We're prepared to play our part
To create a fantasy

Sometimes we are parents
We teach, we sing in bars
By day, we have our real jobs
At night we reach the stars

We are builders, and we're painters
We are singers of great songs
Sometimes we are grievers
When loved ones pass along

Everything we are - everything we dare to be
We're prepared to play our part
To create a fantasy

Some of us - retired
In the garden everyday
Computers - we are wired
We stay inside and play

But inspite of our vocations
and various locations
There's nothing that we wouldn't do
For a Grand Standing Ovation

Everything we are - everything we dare to be
We're prepared to play our part
To create a fantasy
Everything we are
Everything we are
Everything we are

This song was written by Carole Mc Andrew for our up coming 20th anniversay 'Play' on our little island. Some of the words were changed, with permission to suit the 'Cat'.

CarolC... moose in the TRUE wild are much LESS shy. But, it depends on many factors, age, sex, time of year, number of moose, time of day....

EG, Sally would visit at dusk every day last fall. Big guy only visited once in the middle of the night - saw his tracks in morning - close enough for him to look in the windows of the trailer. Perhaps the snoring from my trailer was misinterpreted. I had one HUGE bull who would come to me for sugar cubes when I called - to about ten feet away. Worst thing I ever did. He was summarily shot at dawn the first day of the following season. I've always felt responsible because I taught him to come to me. I really didn't think anyone would take him that far back in really rugged country, but I was wrong.

I have had four or five moose running all around me, confused and scared by my presence, in the rut. I have had four or five watch/ignore me while I sat and had a smoke and talked to them, in the winter. I've watched four bulls square off and spar in what seemed like a round robin type training camp as if I was the audience. I've had cows with calves run at first sight and I've had cows with calves charge, which is the most dangerous situation in these woods, other than a hungry bear who doesn't understand why I am at the top of the food chain.

Anyway, the days of walking past a moose or bear at tewnty feet or feeding moose birds on your shoulder are waning as access to the backwoods by ATV's and such increase.

But, you can still find lots of wild places if you are willing to hoof it.

I'm a singer of traditional songs, thanatolithologist, closet natural historian (but the skulls are on the walls), and I used to be a typographer but now I'm a digital prepress production tech.

Well... this is interesting, Bat Godlet...

The American Heritage instructs us that:than•a•tol•o•gy (th^n1ú-tÄl2ú-jT) n. 1. The study of death and dying, especially in their psychological and social aspects. [ Greek thanatos death]

So I guess what you would do as a thanatolithologist would be...looking up really dead stones and getting them to share their feelings? If so, I can relate. I feel that way at work sometimes...

Regards,

A

I'm a "Jande of all trades", and have managed to master a few. The rest are intermediate and beginner.

I am "the reach that exceeds the grasp or what's a heaven for?"

I am .

Indeed.

Thanatolithologist -- sorry, just the study of gravestones and gravestone carvers. In my case, particularly New England slate markers between 1650 and 1815-ish (willows and urns make my eyes glaze over) and the carver John Just Geyer. Trip over some other pretty interesting stuff, tho' and just got back with a bunch of undeveloped pictures from Mountain View Cemetery (designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, c. 1863) in Oakland -- way out of my era & style, but what a great place!!!

My calendar watch went dead. I'll have to go look in the mirror to find out what I am today. That's not always a pleasant sight.

I am part BS, part real S, and mostly made of salt water, with a collection of musical instruments I wish I could play better. That's why I'm here on Mudcat.

It is a question I seem to ask myself more often as I grow older.

I used to think I was a musician primarily, with a job as Sound Engineer which fitted in quite nicely to give me a reliable, steady income.

These days I find that I am becoming less able to do my job, what with arthritis and tinnitus both combining to make the physical and acoustic demands moving out of my reach.

The depression that this and another failed relationship have conspired to precipitate mean that I've also lost interest in music, and in the social activities associated with that.

So what am I, really? Do tell me - I'm always the last to find out...

If I asked my wife, she would probably say something like "an absolutely wonderful, pain in the ass", she's still asleep so I wont risk becoming anything worse by asking her now. Seriously though if you want to know how you are percieved, ask others. There again there is a risk involved with that, they might tell you the truth. I am also tired after reading all of these postings on this thread. JohnB

Bernard:

Don't be fooled by transient conditions and turns in the script -- what you REALLY are is a Great Author.

Like all Great Authors, you know, of course, that the script has to set up some Great Obstacles for the Hero to overcome. As the Set Designer you also get to decide what the environment in which the Hero, Bernard yclept, overcomes these Barriers in the Pursuit of Happiness, a condition to be defined by the Chief Psychologist Consulting to the Great Author, who also happens to be Bernard...

Relax -- that's just the Chief Psychological Counsel practicing his post-doctoral psychotherapeutic techniques, such as Advanced Active Listening and Semi-acknowledgement. It's all in the Wrist.
