Subject: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 Mar 01 - 12:29 PM Damn, this is getting confusing! First, I decide that the only film of the year that sounds remotely interesting (to me) is "Best in Show". Why? 'Cause Christopher Guest is actually FUNNY. (remember Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman?) Then I rent "Erin Brockovitch" (for Heather) and surprise..I can sit through it. (despite Finney...who was great in The Dresser) Then I think..."well, just 'cause a film's REALLY popular, doesn't neccessarily mean it's bad..I LOVED American Beauty...so maybe I'll check out "Brother Where Art Thou", (after all, the Coen bros. DID make Fargo) even though two of my smarter friends (Peter T and Tony Q) have totally opposing views on it. Well, no question that Chinese Kung Fu movie slippers (the black cotton ones with the pink rubber soles) are my favourite comfortable footwear (got 'em on right now) so maybe a visit to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, is in store. (although I rarely get that much "hang-time" in MY shoes) Gladiator? I dunno. Togas, tits and testoterone flicks, can be fun, but I like my Roman History straight, although romances between Jean Simmons and Kirk Douglas, or even Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis (Spartacvs) are definitely diverting. But nobody ever topped Charlie Heston in Ben Hur/Him....remember when they tried to "pry those ten commandments from his cold dead fingers"?....oops wrong Testament. Chocolat? Sounds promising, Hafta see it on video though......Which is My REAL problem. I simply don't like going to movie theatres anymore....and films weren't MEANT to be watched on the little screen. I know I'm being completely anal, but I get really annoyed at theatre "chatterboxes"...I simply can't ignore them, and enjoy the flick. I keep wanting to turn around and say "Shut the....up"! A good way to get my teeth knocked out. Now forgive me, but I've even considered getting a BIG SCREEN TV!! I know, I know, our friends will think it's for watching WWF wrestling, Seinfeld re-runs, the Christian Deer-Hunter's channel, or Oprah. They'll never believe me when I tell them it's ONLY to watch "fine films" (some of them FOREIGN even!) 'cause I can't hack crowds. Anyone own (or contemplating owning) a BIG TV? (for all the RIGHT reasons of course!) Rick |

Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: mousethief Date: 28 Mar 01 - 12:35 PM I'm a philistine. And proud of it. I haven't seen a new movie in a theatre that wasn't Disney (with the kids) in over 2 years. Alex |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: Pseudolus Date: 28 Mar 01 - 12:43 PM Around here theatres are like Malls, packed to the gills on the weekends and at worst, bearable on let's say, Tuesdays!! My wife and I go to the movies more often on a Tuesday night (early show even!) and we can see almost anything we want to without the screaming hoards! It's great, I LOVE seeing a movie the way it was intended, on the big screen. Big screens at home are ok, but still no match for the theatre on a Tuesday Night!

We DID rent "Nurse Betty" last week. I loved it! Even looked up the "Renee Zelweger Appreciation page" afterwards. Rick |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: Amos Date: 28 Mar 01 - 06:14 PM Rick: I sympathize completely. We watch so little TV we still have the set we used when Ariel was born in 1984, a little computer monitor, which we mostly use to watch rented films on. I have often thought of blowing a chunk of dough on a big screen, especially since popcorn and coke at the theatre -- which was high at a buck when i was a kid -- is now 10!!! Gaaarf!! I am willing to bet that you will enjoy "O Brother" much more than Peter T says you should. No-one has ever accused the Coen brothers of being literary! But they can be quite fun. Regards, A |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: death by whisky Date: 28 Mar 01 - 07:42 PM We went to the pictures(movie theatre)twice on Sunday. In th afternoon,The Emperors New Groove,of course the kids were with us.Disney hasnt done anything decent since Hercules, well Mulan wasnt too bad.In the evening,Traffic. Not what I expected, slow in places, but it did make you think about the drugs situation in the states.Does anybody know what theyre doing?Gladiator was BRILLIANT.A big screen pic.Ridley Scott should have got the Oscar for it.Erin Brokowitch, very enjoyable, moreso because it was a true story, and lets face it ,Julia did look good.Castaway, dragged a bit for me.Havent seen Chocolate or Crouching Tiger.Large popcorn, coke and a bag of mints please. |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 28 Mar 01 - 07:56 PM Rick and Ray (Death). Go see "Brother" and "Crouching Tiger". Trust me. Have I ever steered either of you wrong? Seamus |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: Midchuck Date: 28 Mar 01 - 07:57 PM I hadn't been to a movie at a theater in several years. When it got to be 12 bucks for the two of us against 3 or 4 to rent a video, and it was closer to the bathroom at home, and I could have an ounce of Makers Mark instead of a 32 ounce Pepsi, it wasn't much of a choice. We broke down and went to see Dragon/Tiger/Whatever at the local 9-screen emporium, because several people, including some on mudcat, had said it should be seen on the big screen, and I opine they were right...but what a dump the theater was! Remember when the movies cost a buck and had some class?... Peter. |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 28 Mar 01 - 10:56 PM Our local Flea pit has a Monday Night theatre thingy, once a month, which is sponsored by the local Tourism Association. They seem to show only the sort of films which never normally get to Orangeville. We are in the sticks about 1 1/4 or more hours from Toronto. So recently we went to see both Crouching thingy and Chocolat. Enjoyed both of them. Well the real point of this is that they had an Oscar contest. They handed out forms for everyone to give their guess at who would be the winners. Prizes and everything to be awarded. Well I just heard tonight that we won two free tickets to the next movie. Yeah not a great prize you say, do you know how difficult it was to have not even ONE correct guess. I guess we should go to the movies more often. Phillistines 2 Moviegoers ? JohnB |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock Date: 29 Mar 01 - 05:54 AM Crouching Tiger, Jumping Monkey/Squatting Dog/Hidden Dragon is brilliant - a fantastic piece of work. And you will not be disappointed with O Brother. I thought Gladiator was pretty impressive too. Haven't seen Chocolat, but it looks sickly and sugary - I'll probably watch it on video when it comes out. |
Subject: RE: Oscars, Films, and Phillistines! From: Auxiris Date: 29 Mar 01 - 10:29 AM Rick, I, too detest crowds but love movies, especially on the big screen and thus try to go and see them in the morning for the first showing (which, here in France, is also half price) and never during the week they come out. cheers, Aux
