I hope that some Catters out there can help. My friend Joe is in the market for a good left-handed five string banjo. He is prepared to pay top dollar for the right instrument and will even travel to get it. Can anybody out there advise him on where to go, what is best, what is rubbish and who to contact. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give.

Mickey.

I've just had a look at Deering bajos, who are a very respected maker, to see what they have on offer. They do have a couple of left handed models that may be worth looking at.

They aslo offer a left handed option on thier right handed five strings but I don't like thier method of charging an extra 20% for this - using thier Ivanhoe model as an extreme example, this would mean an extra $1490 for a left handed version.

Go to www.nbbd.com/goldtone Good banjos at excellent prices. Many left hand models available, some at no additional cost. Just remember that once he's learned on a lefty, upgrading to a higher level banjo gets damned expensive. It might be better to learn righty-tighty from the getgo. Good luck!

Well I've learnt something -I just assumed you'd turn the strings around and voila!

Ickle Dorrit:

For a tenor banjo, or a plectrum, maybe you could do just that, but on a 5-string you've got to have the fifth string on the top of the neck when you play.

Try these folks:

Southpaw Guitars, Houston Tx (713) 667-5791

They carry banjo's, though I've only bought guitars from them so far.

They have good prices and in-stock stuff!

Ask for Larry!

In the past I've taken a four string G banjo, put a 5th string peg on the 'wrong' side of the neck, and carefully screwed a machinehead screw into the fingerboard to route the string...

Just thought I'd mention it...
