Hi, banjo-flower- I've looked all over for this- with various spellings, too- but no success. I know someone who I think sings this one- I could find out if you have no luck here.

(pssst...just a note here): It really helps if you put the song title or lyric snippet in the thread title. That way, folks who know the song are more likely to check it out. Have you read The FAQ? First thread on the main forum page, it's teal, and will really help you a lot.

All I can find is booking info for a UK (Lancashire maybe) group called Trouble at Mill, which sings it.

Hi, banjo-flower --

Since I can't answer the music question, I'll try your last query. Teal is the color of the first two thread titles on the forum:

Mudcat FAQ ...
and
What's On

The FAQ thread is full of useful, amusing and amazing info, check it out.

Teal is one of my favorite colors now. It has definetly replaced Day-Glo Green from the seventies and Avacado from the fifties. I will be watching this thread or a new one you may post. Sounds like a fun song.

Chorus:

Ee, by gum, bur'ahm cowd
Ee, by gum, bur'ahm cowd
Me 'ands are like stone, feet like lead
I 'aven't bin warm sin' ah left me bed
I skip straight up to't fire
As near as ahm allowed
And I might get gradely warm at last
Ee, by gum, bur'ahm cowd

Eddie Crotty wrote many of Fivepenny Piece's songs - 'Big Jim' and 'I'm Powfagged' were other 'gems'...

I'll have a think about it, and post the rest of the words when I've remembeed the odd missing line...

A breakthrough!

Suddenly the penny dropped!

An old mate of mine (Bernard Wrigley) joined Fivepenny Piece in 1995 and now gigs with them.

I've emailed him (we were at school together), so watch this space!!

From: bradfordian

Banjo-flower, here's the words I use (don't forget the accent)

EEE BY GUM

CHORUS: Eee by gum but I'm cowd, eee by gum but I'm cowd
Mi hands are like stone, mi feets like lead,
I 'ave n' bin a warm sin' I left mi bed,
I gets reet up t' fire, as near as I'm allowed,
That I might get gradely warm at last, ee by gum but I'm cowd.

Old Jonathan Pratt were a gradely chap, an' 'e liked a pint of ale
That's why 'is nose were allus red but 'is cheeks were allus pale
An' if thou stopped 'im on the street for to pass the time of day
In drunken tones as 'e raised 'is 'at; this is what 'e'd say

Oh a glass at night were 'is great delight, for it warmed 'im up y' know
Where often over over t' danger line t'owd beggar used to go
The parson said "My man, you're on your downward way"
But Jonathon said with 'is ususal charm " It's warm down there they say"

Then Jonathon finally met his match with a yard of ale they say
So we laid 'im out with a jug of stout for t' warm 'im on 'is way
The devil welcomed him and showed him all his charms
But Jonathon said "If this is hell, it's noan so bloody warm"

So are 5p still performing?

Yes - they 're-formed' in 1995, and asked Bernard Wrigley to join. It's a 'part-time' arrangement, according to what gigs are planned.

I'll post more when I know...

Okay, I've had a reply back from Bernard (Wrigley), which has essentially the same words posted by 'bradfordian'. There are subtle differences which make it worthwhile - these are the 'official' words from an ex-member of 5p, so NER!!

As to 5p, I was actually in them for two years but packed them in when I started being a rocket scientist on Emmerdale. We started every gig off with this song. Here it is.

Best Wishes
Bernard

EE BY GUM BUT I'M COWD

CHORUS:
Ee by gum but I'm cowd
Ee by gum but I'm cowd
My hands are like stone, my feet like lead

Bernard, did you ever sing with Bernard Wrigley ?? Many years ago I remember Bernard playing with another Bernard both of them playing concertina. BW used to play a wonderful Bass concertina. JohnB

Yes, but never in public! I think you are thinking of Dave Brooks - they were a duo around the late '60's, just after we all left school. I've got a lap dulcimer made by Stefan Sobell which used to be Dave's.

BJW still plays the Bass concertina - odd beast (the concertina - then again, hrmmp!), as it only plays on the 'push'. There are valves set into the bellows, and it sucks air in on the 'pull' stroke.

Some years ago I tuned it down to concert pitch so he could record his 'Rough and Wrigley' album, where he wanted to multitrack the bass with other instruments. Until then it was in the old 'brass band pitch'.

It was definitely the TWO Bernard's. They played in a small folk club which I used to go to on a Friday night at "The Noel Timpson Youth Centre" on Cheetham Hill Road. Run by a guy called Dave Davidson. Must be another Bernard lurking around. JohnB

As for Bernards lurking - it's our mission in life. No idea who it would have been, though - give me an idea of the year (approx) and I'll 'e' BJW and find out...

It would have been somewhere between 1966 and 1969. The last time I saw Bernard W perform was at the Fylde FF in about 1976 +/_ 1. He was on before the Alex Campell Group. He should have been on after them was all we could say. Cheers, JohnB

The very same!

They even had a TV series for a while.

Sam had a wonderful old Fender Palamino - with the distinctive Fender 'scroll' headstock, which always looked a little unusual on an acoustic guitar.

Where are they now?!

Actually, Dave and his missus live about 3 miles from me or, at least, they did. Mebbe they moved... dunno about Sam, tho'.

About 18 months ago we were playing through some old tapes from the Fleetwood Folk Club 60's 70's for a 30 years CD and came across some recordings of them - what memories - I miss the magic hammer!!!

It would be nice if they still toured - the festival scene would be enhanced if they still give off the enthusiasm and fun element they had back then. Plus of course a lot of talent!!

Lets start a campaign

From: GUEST,shaygate@hotmail.com
Date: 14 Dec 01 - 08:56 AM

Long time ago I heard a song who's chrous I can remember but I would love to know what the song was called and the rest of the lyrics. The chorus went like this :

Eee by gum but I'm cold Eee by gum but I'm cold Me arms are like stone, me feet are like lead I anna bina warm sin I left me bed I'll sit reight up t' fire, as near as I'm allowed And I might get greatly warm again Eee by gum but I'm cold

All sung in a broad yorkshire accent, hence the strange phonetic spellings.

Anybody know the rest ? :-)

I think it's probably called "Ee bah gum, but I'm cowd" or something similar. If memory serves me right it was recorded (in the 70s?) by Five Penny Piece, who, I believe, actually come from the right (i.e. left) side of the Pennines.

Very grateful for the lyrics, as I was wanting 2 sing them at my Mums 90th bday party on sunday. When I saw Bernard Wrigleys name come up I was thrilled! Used 2 follow his concerts , performances early 70s, Fleetwood folk Clubs Battle of the Roses with Tony Capstick, Bernard alone performing at Thornton were always evening of laughter. Loveeee his album Rough n Wrigley :) and it was a joy 2 see him popping up on Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Pheonix Nights over the years. But his singing voice will last in my memory for many decades more, long live the Bolton Bullfrog x
