Wow! I have been searching for almost 20 yrs for the lyrics to this song. It's been kinda a tradition to pass it down for several generations. But some lines of it have been forgotten. just heard a speacial on radio about oklahoma camps and how they sang ole music to entertain then they recorded on cardboard and they recorded old apple tree sung by a small child in the 1800 i believe can remember who looking myself   but it is out there ...........they were work camps where they picked apples and peaches for food

My recollection of Ramblin' Jack's rendition is as I posted it.

What's more, making the first line of the second chorus "It was a limb from the old apple tree" would telegraph and spoil the punch line in the last two lines (in the way I've typed them).

Didn't that second chorus start "It was a limb from..."? That's how my brother sang it, anyway, and he got his version from Ramblin' Jack.

This is a different "Old Apple Tree", as sung by Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The verse is a sort of recitative, and the chorus at least starts out like the classical Old Apple Tree song.

If you go to the Turner Classic Movie website and do a search of their database for "Swing Your Lady" you will see they have some info about the movie and if you look closely they have a link you can click on that will play a trailer of the movie. The trailer has The Weaver Brothers and Elviry singing the song, perhaps not the entire song, but enough for you to get an idea of the melody. I would give a direct link, but sometimes websites frown on giving direct links.

If you have a chance to see the movie "Swing Your Lady" which aired recently on TCM, the version of "The Old Apple Tree" where Pappy planted the apple tree, was performed by the Weavery Brothers and Elviry.

Hi, Nowon - the one site (other than Mudcat) that had the lyrics, gave the John Wayne movie as an "acknowledgement," whatever that means. I figured that might mean that the song was in the movie. I haven't been able to find a reliable source of movie song information, unless there is a soundtrack available.

Joe and Kat, I checked on the John Wayne movie. The only connection I could make between the Old Apple Tree and the movie was Carson Robinson as a songwriter. His name was mentioned earlier that he could possibly have been the artist that recorded Old Apple Tree. Where do you get all this information. I am really impressed with all the help and advice I have gotten today! Thanks

I don't know about the Duke and this song. I never saw that movie and actually never cared for him, much, esp. after "True Grit."

Hi, Kat - Yup, your clicky to the song works fine (and the tune is now in Mudcat MIDIs - [click]); but it was kind of interesting to go off on a tangent and explore the other songs with the same name. The original question was about who recorded the song, which makes me wonder about the source of the song in general. I can't find it in sheet music or in any songbooks.
Was it used in John Wayne's "Quiet Man"?

Uncle Dave Macon also recorded a parody of 'In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree' in 1927. Evidently, this same parody was applied to a cajun version 'Under the Old China Tree' recorded by Joe Werner & the Ramblers in the 1930s. Bob Hyland also noted on an Uncle Dave LP sleeve that the song was probably first recorded in parody by Billy Murray on a one-sided Victor disc in the early 1990s.

The lyrics nowon77 posted are just slightly different from those in the Digital Tradition. I found the same lyrics here (click) - maybe that Webmaster knows something about the song? His/her acknowledgement refers to "The Quiet Man" (Republic Pictures, 1952), so I guess it made the movies. Anybody know of a recording? Gee, do ya think John Wayne sang it in the movie?
So, Nowon77, will you volunteer to rent the John Wayne "Quiet Man" movie and see if he sings your version of the song?
