CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN PURCHASE A CD OF WOLFHOUND/RAY MCAREAVEY WITH THE SONG "THE BALLAD OF ROGER CASEMENT", I DONT MEAN "BANNA STRAND" THE SONG IM LOOKING FOR IN PARTICULAR HAS THE LYRICS BEGINNING:

(for Vol. Frank Stagg, IRA, who died on hunger strike in Wakefield Prison on the 12th of February 1976.

His last wish was to be taken home to Mayo and buried next to his comrade and friend, Michael Gaughan. Free-State forces hijacked his body to prevent a republican funeral. They buried him in a grave not of his family's choosing and covered it over with concrete. Nine months later an IRA unit retrieved his body and with full military honours successfully carried out the last wish of brave Frank Stagg.)

In a cruel British prison, a brave Irish soldier lies;
Body thin and weak with hunger, as the light fades from his eyes.
By his side – two women weeping, one is old and one is young;
On their knees to God appealing, in their soft sweet Mayo tongue.

Re Banna Strand, the first line "Twas on Good Friday morning, all in the month of May" does not make historical sense. The events took place on Good Friday in April 1916 as the guns were intended for use in the Easter Rebellion that month. I prefer to sing "Twas on Good Friday morning, just at the break of day". Also it was three "boys" not two who "met their doom"; Con Keating of Cahersiveen, Charles Monaghan of Belfast and Donald Sheehan of Newcastlewest. The driver Thomas McInerney was the only one to survive the plunge into the water at Ballykissane Pier, Killorglin. In 1919 he was again on IRA duty when he drove Dan Breen and Sean Hogan to Limerick after the ambush at Soloheadbeg which is generally said to have unleashed the War of Independence (The Anglo-Irish War).

Don't know if you have this verse or not, it's from Joe Heaney's "The Road From Connemara" (2000).

Some are sleeping neath the waters of Cork harbour
More are sleeping 'neath the good old Irish clay
But their voices seem to cry out "God save Ireland"
From the lonely woods of Upton far away.

The album also has an amazing version of The Valley of Knockanure on it, different tune as well. However it's not a "rebel" album, but an acquired taste folk album, so try and hear it before you buy it.

All the best and sorry about the poor "Kai Johansen" joke. (he was a Dane who scored a vital cup winning goal for Rangers against Celtic in the 1960s (I was at the game) and some NI Rangers Supporters Clubs are named after him, no doubt much to his amazement.

KAI; I hope you're not one of those Kai Johansen people! (If you don't get this joke it's not worth explaining!).

Wolfhound also do great versions of "The Drumboe Martyrs" and "Outlaw Rapparee" - two of the very finest rebel songs. They are on "50 Complete Irish Rebel Ballads Volume 1". Derry Records IRBI798 CD. 1998.

One thing I would say about 'The Lonely Woods' lyrics is that the way I learned it was, instead of:

"And fell in that Upton ambush for Sinn Fein"

replace that with:

"In the lonely woods of Upton for Sinn Féin"

Still looking around for the rest.

a note to ...Upton: ...three members of the IRA who died in an attack on a troop train at Upton Junction, County Cork, on February 15th 1921. The men were John Whelan, Patrick O'Sullivan and Batt Foley.

Hello everybody,

Recently I got CD of "Wolfhound" called "IRISH REBEL BALLADS" ("The Right Of Man To Be Free"). There are some songs I never heard and I don't have any lyrics for it. Maybe some Catters here have these lyrics?

The songs are: 'Roger Casement", "Brave Frank Stagg", "Woodlands of Lough Glynn", "Blood stained bandage", "Erin's Flag", "Lonely wood of Upton".
