Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,JTT Date: 26 Jan 13 - 09:00 AM Reviving an ancient thread, I've just come across a translation of Liam Ó Raghailligh by Donagh MacDonagh, from his collection The Hungry Grass; it's read by Dylan Thomas on his album Return Journey to Swansea. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 17 Apr 01 - 07:34 AM First found, of course, as the Scottish tune Gilderoy, it subsequently became popular throughout England and Ireland, and later America, carrying all manner of song texts. The title Star of the County Down dates back less than 100 years, to Cathal McGarvey (1866-1927) who wrote the popular song set to it. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,Bardford Date: 16 Apr 01 - 10:56 PM Annraoi, "JC's ABC tune finder" can be found at this link:, TuneFinder ABC, if you are not familiar with it, is a fairly simple (and quite brilliant, IMO) text-based method of transcribing music. Various abc software for PC and Mac can convert the ABC files into midi files and printable scores. There is a link on the above site to Chris Walshaw's ABC Page which will give you all the info. Thanks for the tip on another version of County Down. Cheers, Bardford |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,Annraoi Date: 16 Apr 01 - 10:28 PM Bardford, What is "JC's ABC tune finder"? For another variant of the "STar of the County Down." try "A Chomarigh Aoibhinn Ó" by Ann Mulqueen. Annraoi |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,Bardford Date: 16 Apr 01 - 12:22 AM You know, I thought there was a familiar tune lurking in Mary Bergin's version. I just listened to it again, and there certainly was a similar thematic undertone (listen to me, sounding all educated) as Star of the County Down. I checked JC's ABC tune finder and found a few dozen versions of County Down in various keys and times. Thanks for the help, Brian and JTT. Cheers, Bardford |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,JTT Date: 15 Apr 01 - 08:44 AM Actually just after writing this I started humming "County Down" and realised that it is the same tune - but the rhythm is so completely different that I'd never connected the two. Sorry. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,JTT Date: 15 Apr 01 - 06:46 AM The tune I've always heard isn't the same as The Star of the County Down - different versions, I suppose. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,Brían Date: 14 Apr 01 - 08:04 AM The words and music are in Ceolta Gael. If I knew how to run my scanner, I'd do it right now. If you do'nt have ant sucess, I'll have someone help me do the deed. The melody is the same one used for "The Stsr of The County Down". Its used in many songs religious and secular. In hymnals its called "King's Head". Slán go foill. Brían |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,JTT Date: 11 Apr 01 - 03:47 AM Found one. Deirbhile Ni Bhrolchain's album Smaointe. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,JTT Date: 11 Apr 01 - 03:46 AM Isn't there a translation in An Duanaire, Poems of the Dispossessed by Kinsella? Or am I wrong? It's a wonderful song, though not cheery (curses on the boatbuilders whose bad-luck boat killed her husband on their wedding day, remembrances that his little long arms are with the eels and his eyes with the crabs...) If you want, email me at jt.thompson (at) indigo.ie (this version to annoy the bots) and give m your address, and I'll photocopy the pages from Blas Meala and send them to you. There are a few good recordings of the song: Padraigin Ni Uallachain or Deirbhille Ni Bhrollchain or Triona or Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill do it, I think - know I have it somewhere on an album or two. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,Bardford Date: 11 Apr 01 - 02:09 AM Phillippa, thanks for the lead. I couldn't find the book, Blas Meala, though, at Cló Iar-Chonnachta. My browser had trouble with some of the coding. As well, the site is poorly indexed. No matter though, I went a-searching. It seems the book, by Brian O'Rourke, was published in 1985. A search on booksellers.com yielded no results, although a subsequent song book by the same author can be found there. I'm assuming the book is out of print. I managed to unearth the Gaelic lyrics to the song from the IR-Trad archives, and will spend the rest of my life trying to translate it. That's fine by me, though, because my searches also directed me to a recipe for Blas Meala, which is a beverage that contains the main food groups : orange juice, honey, oatmeal, cream and whisky. A two-litre Thermos of Blas Meala, a pencil and a note pad, and I'm off to the library. Cheers, Bardford |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 02 Apr 01 - 04:09 PM There's a song by this title, so you might find the tune printed in songbooks. It's published in Blas Meala, a sip from the honeypot, published by Cló Iar-Chonnachta. Also sung by Deirbhile Ní Bhrolacháin on her album Smaointe. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: Bardford Date: 02 Apr 01 - 01:42 PM Thanks, Mrrzy, for the suggestion. I have tried variations on O raghaillaigh (usually unintentionally due to my sloppy typing) but will try O'Reilly as well. Cheers, Bardford |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Liam O Raghallaigh From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Apr 01 - 01:30 PM Have you tried some alternate spellings, like the boring old O'Reilly? Sorry I can't be of more help... |
Subject: Liam O Raghallaigh From: Bardford Date: 02 Apr 01 - 12:10 PM I have unsuccessfully searched all the usual ether-places for an abc or gif of this slow air found on Mary Bergin's Feadoga Stain album. Has anyone any idea where I might locate it? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Bardford |
