Nice clip of Niamh Parsons singing this one in Hughes's Pub in Dublin, around the late 1980's.

Harry Champion's dates were 1866-1942. All songs named above, except for some reason for Boiled Beef, are on DT.

Any Old Iron was a music hall song sung by a famous artiste called Harry Champion. My Uncle Dave used to render another of his songs, A Little Bit Of Cucumber, at family parties. His other very well-known songs were I'm Enery The Eighth I Am [his signature tune] & Boiled Beef & Carrots. There is a good Wiki entry on him.

Here's Mick's video with the corrected title:
Sons Of Liberty - Big Mick

I know it's not the song cleod was looking for, but I wanted to correct my error. (And it seems to be a theme-related song.)

The actual title of the song Mick is singing is The Sons of Liberty, written by Dan Milner.

The following are the poignant words for North Americay....
(Phrase's alternate between low and high every two lines.)

Ye lovers all both great and small
Who dwell in Ireland
Oh I pray you pay attention
hilst I my pen command
It was my father's anger
That drove my love away
But I still have hopes
We'll meet again in North Americay

My love he was fair and handsome
And to him I gave my heart
Ah but little was our notion
That we would ever part
It was in my father's garden
That this flower it did decay
But I still have hopes twill bloom again
In North Americay

Now I did not want for money
Kind fortune on me shone
So out of my father's castle
I took 300 pounds
It was in the town of Belfast
My passage I did pay
And then set sail across the sea
To far Americay

Now the captain's wife was kind to me
As you may understand
And she kept me in her cabin
Until we reached dry land
It was in the town of Quebec
We landed on the cay
But I knew not where to seek my love
In all Americay

Now I being sick and sore and tired
Well I went into an inn
And it was there I found my William
The lad I loved within
He took me gently by the hand
And to me he did say
Oh I never thought I'd see your face
In North Americay

Now I hear this couple has got wed
As you may understand
And I hear they live quite happily
In a town they call St. Johns
And the money that she took from home
Well in gold she paid it down
And they think no more of Ireland
Nor Enniskillen town.

The Chieftains song begins "Ye lovers all both great and small, that dwell in Ireland" and is the fourth song of six on this web page

Wolfgang, your link is no longer working. But I'm just finishing up a video of Big Mick singing a song that starts out "Farewell, ye sons of Ireland ..." and finishes up each verse with "...
North Amerikay."   It's from the wee hours of the morning in the Peace Cabin at last year's FSGW Getaway.   As soon as it's finished I'll put it online and maybe you can tell me if this is the same "North Amerikay" your link originally went to.

You're lucky, Cleod, I got the Chieftains CD couple of days earlier and have done the search already last week. Here's North Americay and here's Any Old Iron . The second one is only close to what he sings.

The "North Amerikay" song is probably the one usually known in Ireland as "Ye lovers all", from the first line. Its in Sam Henry's "SOngs of the People" book.

If you transcribe it - I'll try to edit it for you!

Song titles are often about the poorest way to identify a song, so many have the same or almost the same title. There are several about Irishmen going to, or in North America. How about giving the first line or two of the song?

And I'm also looking for the the song sing by Roger Daltrey on the same cd "Any Old Iron". He mentioned something about it being a London folksong...
