Subject: Ego-Surfing
From: Murray MacLeod
Date: 03 Apr 01 - 12:06 PM

If there has been a previous thread on this, then it was before my time.

I am reliably informed by one who should know that "ego-surfing" is the geek term for searching on your own name on a search engine.

I searched "Murray MacLeod" on Google and discovered that I was co-writer of a 1967 Top 40 hit, "Sunshine Girl", I have played session guitar on a couple of Loggins and Messina albums, and had minor supporting roles in episodes of "Kung-Fu" and "Colombo". I also hold down a job as a Senior Police Inspector in Ontario, as well as running a marine charter enterprise in the Western Hebrides.

Anyone else have any surprise information to share ? (Hint: Google is by far the best search engine to use for this purpose)

Murray

I am amazed. I am apparently a baseball player for the Auburn Tigers, a chantey singer with Roll & Go, a second grader in New Jersey, an actor in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers, the vocalist and artist for Torn Apart, a "metallic hardcore" band, a member of the Mudcat Café, and a member of Just Us, a folk duo with Pat Gardiner.

I am not amazed that there are others who share my name but that in the above list there are only three that are NOT me.

Holy Keerist Brendy! You look a LOT younger in your photo!

Oh yah, lucky me. I share names with a far-right author and teacher at ultra-conservative Bob Jones University!

That's bad enough...but I even got an e-mail from one of his ex-students.

I can only hope that a few commie pinko folksingers have sent CDs to HIM for radio airplay!

That wouldn't surprise me, Rick, as it was taken 7 years ago!! If it's the photo that you mean..that B/W one where I'm in the middle of eating a toasted sandwich, and the shutter went down in mid-chew.

Isn't it terrible what they put up on the Internet these days?

I haven't done this for some time. As I have an unusual surname, which is also a UK and Irish placename, I have used it as a test of any new search engines I come across. There are now many more people in the US than the UK with the surname and on the only time I stayed in the eponymous village I met some Canadians with the same name.
Judging from the entries in various library catalogues they were a Dissenting lot in the 17th Century (no change there then!) and wrote a lot of Dissenting Tracts and got shipped out to the colonies!
Americans tracing their ancestry sometimes contact me having found my name as it is on our institutional webpages.
Investigating the family history will be one of my retirement projects (so Herself tells me, to save me from sitting around all day listening to music!). All I have so far are photos of a road sign, village sign, factory chimney and barely legible gravestone in the local church.

Didn't find any "amoret king"s but plenty references to hammerite (of course).
AND - I found out that free community events will "mark king" holiday - blimey!!!

I have searched some of the better known Mudcat names and been amazed at their list of talents and accomplishments, but I will leave it to them to post.

I once made the mistake on another forum, of making a joking reference to a member whose name was David Berkowitz. I don't ever again want to go through the agony I felt when he emailed me and recounted tales of his school-days.

Confident that I would find no other versions of myself, with my unusual last name, I was intrigued to find the following:

Under David Oesterreich

A recipe that I had posted for Bacon Avocado & Cheese Omelets with Tomato Sauce. This was far enough back that I'd forgotten the recipe. It was on an old pre-web BBS mail forum called Cuisine.

A few postings I had made to Banjo-L, the banjo-player distribution list-really me.

Then I found that I was an rally driver, driving a Corvette, at least back in '97-98.

Under the name Dave Oesterreich

I'm a right-handed male (thank God!) volleyball player in Austin. Don't know what state.

Another show-up as a rally driver.

Banjo-L postings again--me.

And under D. R. Oesterreich

No luck. The D period R period became DR, and as DR Oesterreich I'm a researcher, probably an MD, in Germany and/or Austria. All these entries in German. Fitting, I suppose, since "Oesterreich" is the German word for Austria.

There are a few guys out there named Don Firth, most of whom are not me.

One is a woodworker who lives in Toronto, Ontario, and has a website called "Grampa'a Workshop."

Another is into BeOS and shows up on discussion forums.

Yet another is a high-powered executive somewhere, but I wasn't able to figure out what company or what he did.

Bingo! One was me, in a long list of jazz and folk musicians who performed at the Llanhngaelhyn Coffeehouse in Seattle in the Sixties.

Further on, I got into a large list of fan sites for British actor, Colin Firth. No relation, as far as I know.

Lots of geographical locations, but no Firth of Don. Oh, well.

Well, there sure is more stuff on me than I ever would've suspected! I'm gonna print some of it out and stick it in my "ego box" along with old posters & press stuff.
It'll be a sort of time capsule for our new granddaughter if she ever wants to know what I did with my life. Ya know, it was a bit like alchemy. I picked and sang into the wind-----and came home with the rent---and a million bucks worth of memories.

Well Carol, you may find us saccharine...but at least you know we're not gay!

Here's one of the weirdest aspects of checking yourself out on the internet. Just typing in your name will get you X amount of stuff....but put it in a phrase (any phrase) and countless other crappola comes out!

I've found reviews of albums and concerts that I didn't know existed. Quite a while ago I did some book illustrations that I'd forgotten about....THE NET FORGETS NOTHING! One little folk club in England has archived everyone who so much as tripped over their stage...so there I am with at least 40 musicians who are currently DEAD!

Even found my late father scattered through Pharmaceutical stuff. Discovered he was Pharmaceutical executive of the year one time. Couple of tears from this end.

I don't know about you Kendall, but the IFFY reviews don't do much for the ego.

I WOULD like to know what Catspaw found though.

Matt...the great thing for you is that you're young enough to still BE all those things!

Rick Fielding (not the fundamentalist from Bob Jones U.)

A gospel singer; character names - 1 in a tv series, one in a movie; cast on a show recording, singing with my sister Ann (without an e - they misspelled it); in a news item showing sheer stupidity about not leaving my home in severe forest fires; artist of pen and ink drawings in a book about Philadelphia; author of children's books; academic at an Oz University - I once nearly got away with charging my hotel bill to her because the incompetent hotel people had used some sort of credit database when I made the reservation and hadn't checked if it was me; past president of a music club in Florida; I've had more husbands than I can count and produced lots of offspring over the last couple of centuries, and died at least twice in the last couple of years; school teacher, member of boards of directors; have a gymnasium named after me... The list goes on and on.

But beat this one, you guys!! I declined an invitation to spend a week in Hitler's mountain retreat (invited because I was white and not Afro-American).

Well, this one will please Wolfgang to no end, I am at Harvard in the Division of Applied Sciences!

I also died in Lousiana in 1957 and 1999. I have over 25 years experience in healthcare management in Nursing and administrative positions and been an RN since 1973 and am a VP on charge of medical underwriting or some such.

In '01, I also placed 30th with a time of 20:03 at some thing at Yale.

I also found my mom's obit. with my name in it. Found my tune in the Mudcat Songbook and a couple of genalogical queries I'd posted. Those were all on Kathleen LaFrance. There used to be someone who had that as a dotcom who sold used books and antiques in California, but I couldn't find it this time.

If I search on Katey LaFrance, all of my writing stuff shows up, as well as some stuff I wrote about my brother and his music. That was a fun search as I found someone included a quote from one of my articles on their favourite quote page! Don't even know where they found it!

I searched for Kat LaFrance and came up with zilch. LOL...

Roger the skiffler, if you want any tips on searching for family on the net, holler. I've been at it for about 3 years, online, now and had some success. The other night I was talking to Aine, who said she'd never been able to find any on her family name, online. While we were talking I came up with several, including a family discussion group.

Sorry for the Thread Drift.

I've just succumbed again using my full name and apparently I have Corvette dealership in the US!
What really gobsmacked me was it turned up a recent article by an American academic that actually cited one of my articles written 20 years ago when I was still ambitious and wrote for the professional press (well at least for the one journal in the field that actually paid its contributors).
I was surprised mainly because: 1) Hey, it was 2O years ago; 2)The journal was not one of the respectable peer-reviewed ones, it was much more "popular"; 3) My articles were usually cynical, practicalrather than theoretical and tried to be humorous, and, well, you know my attempts at humour!

PS, thanks, kat, for the ofer. I have recently reestablished contacts with my cousins, all already retired, after many years and some of them have started on this. My Dad, bless him, is no help. He remembers every detail of his WW2 experiences (and very boring they were!) and recounts them at every opportunity but can't remember the names of his grandparents or uncles and aunts.
If we turn up anything on the treasure in the West Indies one ancestor left behind (allegedly)after fleeing to Canada in the 18th Century (probably for telling bad jokes!)I'll let you know...

Okay, I searched under my Mudcat name and found the two words in a number of archaeology reports and a page of Tristram Shandy, but never used as a name.
Under my real name (the shortened version I'm known by), however, I exist as me on the University departmental web pages, but am also found not as me on a pile of geneology pages, as a neurology consultant and as a biologist. Oh, and as a character in "Snow in August", whatever book that is.
When I search with my full name I don't exist in cyberspace, so it's nice to be unique.

The trouble with having a weird name like mine is that there's bugger all else that shows up that isn't me in various incarnations (mainly lunatics squirelling away old cuttings to serve their own deranged theories) - apart from some bloke on a TV programme called "Survivors" who sounds a total pillock.
Rather poignantly though, I did find someone with exactly my name who died at the age of four, complete with a photograph of his parents, which was rather affecting.

Well, that was mildly fascinating. Apart from the real me I was pleased to find myself as a Scottish Animal Rights Activist, surprised to learn that I had fought in Vietnam, amazed to find that I was a professional photographer, but annoyed to discover that I was also a drummer. I also seem to have died quite a lot.

Ego-searching for my partner, I find that she co-wrote a song with Nanci Griffith. She never told me that! She's also a Scottish novellist and the Secretary of the North California Dachshund Club. But her major achievement must be coming second in a Hog Calling contest (ages 6-12) in Smyth County, Virginia.

I suppose if I searched under the names that we were registered with at birth, we may end up being several more completely different people.

My surname is not common; and since it is Italian (Aloi) and "Peg" is kinda Irish, well, it is also a strange combination...

Well, either it was somebody else, or I did spend a glorious year on the beach with a Latin woman and then the whole thing was somehow erased from my memory. Which seems totally unfair, don't you think?

Well, it seems that I am a flower (hesperis matronalis), a butterfly (speyeria hesperis, or Northwestern Fritillary) and a dinosaur (megalosaurus hesperis)!

Hmmm, it seems I am also another butterly, from Peru this time... (callicore hesperis).

A pedigreed Labrador Dog (MOORMAN'S HESPERIS)

Some Russian page I couldn't read had a reference to me...

A couple of things from French literature...

Western Least Bittern, some kind of bird (Ixobrychus exilis hesperis).

I am the capital city of Hesperia, population 3500.

I am a Dragon. A TSR "Krynnese Red Dragon" to be precise.

I have something to do with traditional morrocan embroidery... and organ transplants... and Manitoulin Island...

This one is pretty cool, it seems I am a character in some fantsy world: http://www-ensimag.imag.fr/eleves/Laurent.Luciani/palladium/rifts/hesperis.html (It's in french, though.) And, that hesperis wears clothing with *Serpents* on them... interesting.

And this one is closest:
---------------------------------------------------

Alice Bailey & Djwhal Khul - Esoteric Philosophy - Master Index - HESPERIS

HESPERIS (page 1 of 1) Hercules, 58: this," she said, "forget it not." And lastly Hesperis came, the wonder of the evening star, and Hercules, 76: an apple marked with the golden word Service. Hesperis, the evening star, the star of initiation,

---------------------------------------------------

I am a Genus. (They could have put the "i" in it... *sheesh*)

Hmmm, on page 14 of the search, there was finally something by the real me!

...I gave up at page 17. 3800 pages, no way am I going to get through all those!

The interesting thing is how many of these had something of interest to me, and how well this name actually reflects my personality... Strange.

As hesperis says: "The interesting thing is how many of these had something of interest to me, and how well this name actually reflects my personality... Strange."

When I first did this kind of search I had vague ideas of writing it up as a fictional story, about parallel lives living in the same world at sometimes overlapping and sometimes disparate times.

Tempted even more now, unless this becomes a Mudcat challenge and you all beat me to it.

Hint, hint.......hint......hint, hint, hint.......

Once, while I was building a wedding card for a lass who was marrying one of our members, she asked about the Net and how I found these often hilarious snippets.

"Simple, watch this.." I said, went on-line, and typed her surname in the AV search box - AV all-but had a hernia...

Turns out it was a woman from my college class with the same last name (and my mother's first name and initial). We met a couple of times; our paperwork sometimes got crossed in the campus mail. The similarities do not end there. Her father's first name is the same as my dad's middle name; we both have brothers named Robert; and she had a twin, as did my father.

Interesting footnote to my initial posting. Two weeks ago I got a delightful letter from a couple in Seattle containing the lyrics to the 1967 hit "Sunshine Girl" saying that they had been lifelong fans and asking me to autograph the lyrics and return the SAE, if I was in fact the same Murray MacLeod who had written the song. For a split second I considered making their day, but of course I phoned them and wished them luck in their continuing search.

I should have asked them how they had traced me down. I know you can get Yellow Pages online for anywhere in the USA (or anywhere else for that matter), but how would somebody in Seattle go about uncovering a private address for somebody in Miami?

They even have me in an article related to my former life here.

Google has 5 pages, but the last 3 are mainly because my first and last name show up in different places on the pages. The last time I checked, Alan of Oz's Midi Page was in the hits - one hit per song I'd sent. They don't seem to show up now, but I looked important for a little while!
