Let's face it...duct tape is great stuff. You can do all kinds of neat things with it. So, let's get it off the Bushwhacked thread and give it a thread of its own, I say!

I challenge the Mudcat to come up with 99 excellent uses for duct tape, starting with the next post...

Go to it.

I have and use different colors of duct tape and have used it to:
decorate a cake,
make a ukelele strap,
fix a soccer cleat,
make a greeting card,
frame a picture,
mark dog agility obstacles,

I also have a neice in the duct tape supply biz (makes her my favorite) and she feeds my habit.

Well, first off, you can sing and talk about it as we did on this thread. Or you can visit Ol' Red hisself and order up some of his "Duct It Yourself" tapes and do some projects, like making a satellite dish out of an old patio umbrella, empty chip bags, and, of couse, duct tape.

Those will put you well over a hundred and if they only hit 99, wrap yourself up in it and do a half gainer into a McGill crapper.

"A half gainer"??? What's that? You should know that we never do anthing by halves in Orillia...

I should think you could use it to contain an unwanted attack of flatulence...for a while, that is. Even duct tape has its breaking point.

Matt - is the iguana tail supposed to reattach itself and stay alive? Doesn't sound too likely to me...

Well, my mailbox was leaning over very badly. Then the ground froze, so it was OK for the winter. Then it snowed and a plow knocked off the box and the wood bits holding it onto the main post. I couldn't get the nails out, and couldn't shove them back in the holes. It's duct taped up there now, and is very solid. This is much better than the "bucket stuck on a snowbank" method that some guy on my street used.

Jeri's post is the best use so far.

For all aspiring luthiers, using duct tape is the simplest way to glue up a bookmatched guitar top. Lay the two halves side by side and stretch strips of duct tape across them. Then open them up and apply the glue. Then fold them back again, and place a weight on top, just enough to keep from springimg up. The duct tape will provide just the right amount of clamping pressure.

btw, the stuff you buy in hardware stores nowadays is crap. You can still get "real" duct tape from specialist suppliers, like Veritas and Woodcraft.

Back when I was racing, we were at Phoenix Raceway where my team mate, Bobbie Cooper threw a rod in her G production MG Midget during practice. She was racing for National points,so it was important that she run in the race.We went out on the track and picked up the pieces of the engine block that were knocked out by the rod, took them back to the pits, and put the engine back together with duct tape.

We had pulled the damaged rod pieces and piston out of the engine, pulled the push rods to the affected cylinder so the valves wouldn't operate and pullled the spark plug wire off.We then cleaned the block parts thoroughly and placed them in their respective positions like a jigsaw puzzle. and then put a lot of duct on the block.

We had an amazed audience of tech inspectors, various track officials, and assorted other racers and mechanics all telling us it would never work and the engine would never run.

All were extremely surprised when not only did the engine fire and run,Bobbie actually made three laps in the race before bringing it in.

The vibration was so great with only 3 of the 4 reciprocating pieces going that the car was pretty much undriveable.

Now is "duct tape" the same as "masking tape", which is basically tough waterproof paper, and which is useful for every purpose under heaven? Or is it that plasticised stuff that I can't manage to use without tearing my teeth out and destroying my fingernails?

My friend swears she used it to provide uplifting bra-less support when wearing a strapless formal dress. You run the tape from one side of the breasts underneath to the other side so it squishes them together and pushes them up. Apparently it's a supermodel technique. Cheaper than a wonderbra.

If you're putting your instrument cases on the airplane through the luggage check, wrap around the whole case and cover all the latches with at least 2 layers of tape. This will make them less likely to pop open and get torn off in handling.

As soon as you touch down and reclaim your instrument, unwind it and throw it away (the tape, I mean) -- less likely to leave marks on the case the shorter a time it's on there.

I thought that might be it. Masking tape is the stuff for me - putting up notices, cleaning surfaces, holding any kind of temporary repair together (for example while the Araldite sets), and a million other uses. And you can take it off as soon as you want without any hassle. And it doesn't leave any marks or damage normally, so you can use it on guitars holding the cheat sheet on etc.

  • Once, while babysitting, I used little strips of duct tape to fasten a disposable diaper when the little adhesive strips didn't work. (parents were surprised, but as Vermonters, they appreciated the resourcefulness)
  • Many, many repairs to canvas Converse Chuck Taylors
  • Repaired MAJOR holes in a ski bag which has survived several plane trips since
  • Made DOZENS of ski ties (to hold a pair of skis together, base-to-base... one loop with the sticky side out covered with another loop, sticky side in)
  • And my favorite...last Halloween, I constructed a scale-mail shirt entirely out of old CD-ROMs and duct tape...

now in the USA, "duct tape" and "gaffers tape" are different products...similar, but use different adhesive and fiber. Stage hands and roadies would not DREAM of using duct tape to fasten cables to pillars or floors..etc...it leaves residue and does not tear the same way..Gaffers tape is not usually an off-the-shelf item in stores, and is more expensive.

also, McGrath..there's another UK/American difference in terminology..... 'Araldite' is unknown here...we say 'epoxy'....Araldite seems to be both a brand name and a general class of adhesives called "epoxy resins"...but in the UK, it has become synonomous with one company's products.
