I'm a beginner but I really like the song and used a kind of trial-and-error method to find out what chords work (for me!) to sing the song to, I do NOT expect all this to correspond to the chords used in the song. Capo on 6th fret will make it the same pitch as KR&KR. Feel free to improve it :)

G          Em    G       C       G          Am    D7
My love's a tall & handsome man, the best you'll see:
G          Am         Em    G    Am    D       G
he's gone away to the plantations    to pick coffee.
    C         G       C          G       C       Am         D7
The recruiter says he won't come back & I need no longer bide.
       G       D       G      Em   C         D7    G
But I'm waiting here until the day    of the lorry ride.

   C       G       C          G      C    Am    D7
My days are hard, my nights are long & I am so alone.
         G       D               G    Em   C      D7       G
But I'll dream a dream that will never end    till he comes home.

G             Em       G       C       G         Am    D7
The recruiter said the odds are low, the work's so hard,
       G         Am          Em       G      Am    D          G
And he won't get through the long hard night,    the hours after dark,
         C      G            C          G            C       Am         D7
And that in the fields he'll breath the fumes of the death insecticide
    G    D       G       Em   C       D7    G
And even still he won't survive    the lorry ride.

   C       G       C          G      C    Am    D7
My days are hard, my nights are long & I am so alone.
         G       D               G    Em   C      D7       G
But I'll dream a dream that will never end    till he comes home.

G               Em    G          C    G         Am    D7
Oh my love must work a twelve hour day beneath the sun
         G       Am       Em         G      Am          D         G
And he's working there for three long months -    that's when he's done.
          C       G      C    G         C       Am             D7
And he'll sleep beside a dying man who's weeping from the burns.
G       D          G    Em    C      D7   G
I fear my love won't be so young    when he returns.

   C       G       C          G      C    Am    D7
My days are hard, my nights are long & I am so alone.
         G       D               G    Em   C      D7       G
But I'll dream a dream that will never end    till he comes home.

Hi,

I don't know how to create a new post and since everyone's been so helpful on this thread i thought i might ask you guys.

I absolutely adore the song John Barbury from the new(ish) Awkward Annie and i've got all the lyrics but i was hoping that someone better than me might have worked out the chords. If so i'd love a copy of them. Thanks in advance to better musicians than me.

Megs

Ray,

Have a careful read of this thread Lyr Add: Recruited Collier for a fascinating tale of how this has been chopped and changed since the original 1803 Jenny's Complaint

Lorry Ride sung at Barnsley FC regularly, I think Sharon Fountain got this from George Norris, who figures somewhere along the line

Graham and Sheila Nelmes ~ High is the Tower, on vynil

re Recruited Collier, can anyone say why last verse two lines omitted, was this a recording error on Anne Briggs?, should be:

"For seven long years he courted me now I can't live without him,
There's nothing left for me to do but sit and think about him,
So break my heart and then it's o'er, O break myt heart me deary,
And I'll lie in the cold cold ground for of single life I'm weary"

Error continues to be compounded by others not this checking this out ~ or do you know differently?

Actually, if my memory serves me right I learned the song from Steve Turner's album & later on stayed with Sharon Fountain & we went to someone's house - whose name escapes me - meeting up with Kate & Kathryn when I played the song to them & I think that that's when they first heard it.

Steve Turner also recorded it and I have to say that it's a shame that Nic Jones didn't.

Well, it wasn't me who refreshed the thread but since I got told off by Malcolm for not knowing the club rules I have had a go at working the chords out and Kate/Kathryn seem to play it with capo at 1 using C and F shapes with a little G now and again. I still haven't had time to work out exactly how it works but it's a start and I can just about get by.

GUESTDemi,

Yes, this is the "Lorry Ride" recorded by Graham & Sheila Neimes. Their record was called High is the Tower if I remember correctly. I've never seen another album by them. They did a nice version of Ned of the Hill. It wasn't a close translation of the gaelic song but I liked it a lot.

By the way the melody used for "The Lorry Ride" is Casadh An tSúgán if anyone's interested.

Richard

Apologies - I will learn to use the system properly.

Keep up the good work

Malcolm

Thanks - that is one of the problems with being a "drop in" user of the list. I never get to work out how to do much more than read and post. I will check the search engine - it will be a good learning exercise]. As far as working the chords out - I just have not got the ear or the talent [and I guess I have not got the time or I'm too lazy].

Lyrics and some background information were posted to your original thread, which is here:  The Lorry Ride

Perhaps you forgot to check it before starting a new thread on the same subject.  We have a very good search engine here now -the Digitrad and Forum Search on the main Forum page, which can usually find such things.  The FAQ on the Forum page contains a lot of very helpful information about how to search, too;I recommend it.  As for chords; presumably a guitar player could work some out for you?

PS: Yes, I knowthat sounds facetious: seriously, though, if you learn the tune first, once you can sing it to yourself you should be able to work out an accompaniment.

If anyone is interested (this is my other fave song off the Rusby/Roberts CD:) I'd be interested to know if anyone tried it, found any cool variations, if it worked, didn't work, etc.

This is an html experiment, so be forgiving. ;)

RECRUITED COLLIER

    C Am G
O what's the matter wi' you my lass
Am F G
And where's your dashing Jimmy?
C Am G
O, the soldier boys have ta'en him up
Am F G
And sent him far, far from me
C G
Last payday he went off to town
Am F G
And them red-coated fellows
C G
Enticed him in and made him drunk
Am G F
And he's better gone to the gallows.

and so on for the rest of the song...

I asked about the songbook on Kate's site last october - this is what her mum said:

Dear Eric Thanks for the email - Kate's song book has been a bit delayed (it's been a hectic year!) but, fingers crossed, we are hoping to have it ready by the end of November. We will put your e-address on the mailing list, and let you know when it is ready. Best wishes Ann Rusby

Unfortunately nothing received yet.

Oh, yes. I'm sure Miss Kate would love to take time out of her busy schedule to provide me with chords. . *grin*

Come to think of it...she did say that sometime in the future she plans to issue a songbook. I don't know if it will include the Rusby/Roberts selections, though...now *that* would be worth finding out. :)

Sigh. I suppose I'll just have to sit down with the CD and go plinkety-plinkety. If I come up with anything good I'll post it. (Don't get your hopes up. My arrangement of "Recruited Collier" involves exactly four chords, over and over in pretty much the same sequence. I'm trying to spice it up, but I'm not that advanced yet.)

This isn't the Lorry Ride which I've got recorded by Graham and Sheila Neimes, is it. Sheila has got a really beautiful voice and i'd like to find something else by the duo, or her solo.

appreciate any info.
