Subject: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Apr 01 - 07:58 PM I have just returned from a session at the Jug where I was privileged to listen to the master of the new CD by Bill Sables, Sam Pirt and Ian Stephenson. The CD which will be out in the next few weeks includes great instrumental tracks such as Napoleon Crossing the Rhine and a lovely Danish waltz plus some cracking songs sung by Bill including Cockfight (definitely a touch of Eastern promise in the backing on that one) and my personal favourite, Whitby Fisherman, written by Bill. The trio will be heading for the US on June 1st and touring the East coast for two weeks so if anyone wants to contact Bill with a view to booking them get in quick 'cos they are well worth going to see! Anywhere between Virginia and Maine they'll try to fit you in! |

Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: GUEST,Patrish Date: 05 Apr 01 - 03:37 AM I heard the master tape at the Jug last night(and heard them live) If you will excuse language they were "king brilliant" I have put in an order for the first CD - if you get the chance to see them while they are across the pond, take it - you wont be disappointed.
Almost thread creep - I am about to start another thread related to what happened to Eric the Viking and me on the way home from the Jug last night..........bizzare! |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 01 - 08:47 AM Only a lurker, but at least one who has been to the Jug! Go see them, buy the CD, wear the T-Shirt - what else can I say Sid |

Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: GUEST,guest Date: 05 Apr 01 - 11:54 AM Is it the same Pirt who was at whitby last year? If it is thanks for the pint mate cheers Bob |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Geoff the Duck Date: 05 Apr 01 - 05:11 PM If it wasn't Sam Pirt who you met at Whitby it would probably be Sam's father Graham Pirt. Sam plays piano accordian with fingers which move like greased lightning, Graham sings with a voice like velvet. Both are well worth meeting! GtD |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Susan of DT Date: 05 Apr 01 - 06:19 PM Yet another trip to the states, Bill? Guess you can't keep away. Let us know where you will be. Remember I'm in New Jersey and Dick is in Connecticut. You should be near one or both of us. |

Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Allan C. Date: 06 Apr 01 - 07:51 AM I join the rest in extending the welcome. I sincerely hope for the chance to see and hear the boys. But, folks, these guys are "all dressed up with no place to go". So please start doing all you can to get them some bookings. Otherwise this will become a very expensive visit for them. |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Dani Date: 06 Apr 01 - 08:32 AM Well, if they won't come to North Carolina, I guess I could be talked into a trip to VA. Keep us posted. Dani |

Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: bill\sables Date: 06 Apr 01 - 11:25 AM Hi Ye'all, Thanks for the postings. I will try to clear up what is happening. Sam Pirt is one of the best accordion players in the UK at the moment, he has won numerous competitions for accordeon playing as well as Young Folk Musician Award for B.B.C. Radio 2. He has played at various festivals including Cambridge UK, Whitby UK, Tonder Denmark, and Flaun Sweden. He presently plays with the award winning band "422" and with his Dad Graham Pirt of "Cockersdale". I first met Sam when he was 15 and he played with my ceilidh band "Shananikins" for 5 years , he is now just 21 years old. He plays tunes from England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Scanainavia, and French Canadian regions and he uses syncopated rythms and impossible bass lines which mesmerise his audiences. Ian Stephenson is only 18 years old but he plays guitar like he has been playing for 50 years, he is also very, very good on melodeon. Ian also plays with "422" so has played the festivals the same as Sam with the addition of playing in the Gulf States last year representing the UK. Most of you know who I am but for those who don't I have been playing folk since the early 60s and have done clubs, concerts, radio, TV, and festivals in three continents. I play Tenor Banjo, Mandola, Mandolin, Melodeon, and Guitar and I also sing with the trio. Most of my songs are trad from my native Tyneside but there are a scattering of songs from Scotland, England, Ireland and the USA. Sam and Ian have never been to the USA and asked if there was any chance of getting a few bookings in June this year, we can only come between June 1st and June 14th because of already booked festivals in the UK, and we would like to cover the costs of the flights and car rental. I have sent out a few tentative enquiries to Maine, New Hampshire, Pensylvania, New York, but as yet have no positive dates (Dani, North Carolina and Ohio could be in if we could get bookings somewhere) We need to know weather to fly to Boston or Washington, or New York so if any one could organise a house concert we would be very grateful. We have recorded a new CD as Mrs. Duck said at ther start of this thread and so far, after hearing the first mixings, we are very pleased with it. It will probably be called "Bridging the Gap" to try to bring over the idea of the age gap between Sam, Ian and Myself and also the Atlantic Gap between the UK and the USA in trad music. If anyone can help we would be most gratefull I am sorry it is short notice. You can Email me at billsables@netscapeonline.co.uk or send me a PM via mudcat. Thanks again. Bill |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Joy Bennett Date: 06 Apr 01 - 11:33 AM bill -- don't know if you ever received my email in response to yours, but you need to get in touch with me if anything is to be worked out -- on another note -- I'm very interested in your Whitby Fishermen song -- Joy you can email me directly at joybennett@att.net |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Naemanson Date: 06 Apr 01 - 11:37 AM Jeri, it might be a good idea to coordinate their visit with an evening at the Press Room. Sounds like it would be a good idea for Sam to meet Chris. |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Rex Date: 06 Apr 01 - 12:19 PM I'm with Sorcha, feeling regret that we live out here west of the the Mississip. I sure would like to see you again Bill. Rex |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Jeri Date: 06 Apr 01 - 12:21 PM I would absolutely LOVE to have them come to a session! I'm also quite sure Chris would enjoy meeting them and vice versa. I wish I were better connected regarding finding them a gig. The Press Room was once a likely venue, but they seem to book local alternative rock groups these days, and ownership changed hands a few years ago. Still, the place is great and they host our sessions. Joy, I don't know if you've heard Bill's song, but it's a good 'un. You know - the sort of song you hear, and your first reaction is "why haven't I heard that before now?" |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: bill\sables Date: 06 Apr 01 - 12:22 PM Sorcha, Rex, Art, Mick, We might be able to get over again around easter next year and we will surely come to the Mid West Bill |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 06 Apr 01 - 02:27 PM Hi all Its great to see such a good responce. I am really looking forward to coming over and playing with all you catters accross the sea in the US!! Also I must also mention something that you may also be interested to know.... We can also offer to do workshops when we are in the US. Bill can do Tenor banjo, Mandola etc. Ian can do Melodion and Guitar (in DADGAD & Standard) and I can do Piano accordion and the odd bit of French Canadian Foot Percussion if I am pushed into it. At beginner, Intermediate and advanced. I look forward to meeting you all. Cheers, Sam

Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Mrs.Duck Date: 06 Apr 01 - 04:09 PM You will love it Joy! And if anyone knows a suitable venue do try to arrange with Bill. They're not interested in making loads of money (nice though that would be) but do need to cover costs otherwise they won't be able to come again and that would be a shame for them and all you people who want to see and hear them. |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 06 Apr 01 - 06:24 PM Bill, if you give me dates I can get you into Nelson as I said in my email. I just need to know pretty soon so I can book the hall and do a bit of PR! Wanna come to my school? We pay good money! |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: bill\sables Date: 06 Apr 01 - 06:50 PM Allison, We would love to play your school. Any money is good money we would just like to cover expences. Bill |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: roopoo Date: 07 Apr 01 - 03:06 AM I didn't get to the Jug last week and it looks like I missed a cracker! I too have heard them, and you lot over the pond are in for a rare treat! Not only are they all most wonderfully talented, but thoroughly nice blokes as well! Can't wait for the CD. I have one of just Bill and Sam, and that's damn good too! Andrea |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: bill\sables Date: 07 Apr 01 - 08:30 AM I just had to refresh this thread because it was preceeded by the thread titled "More Bad News" and it read : "More bad news, Sables Pirt and Stephenson in US" Bill |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Mr Red Date: 07 Apr 01 - 08:40 AM Good Luck you lot, I always remember the image of Sam at Warwick FF in the Moor & Coast tent, jamming with the "Pack" smiles and skill. Just what I love about folk. Why are young people so young these days? |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Susan of DT Date: 07 Apr 01 - 09:16 AM The Mystic Sea Music Festival is the weekend of June 7, which a lot of us go to. You want to be in the big cities for weekends, if you want any size audience. |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Ian Stephenson Date: 07 Apr 01 - 09:35 AM Thanks for the encouragement folks -much appreciated! For your convienience I've created a special website with a picture of us and a couple of sneak previews of our new album! Go here to see it! |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Naemanson Date: 07 Apr 01 - 10:22 AM OOOHHHH NNNNOOOOO! Their visit coincides with MYSTIC! That means I have to set up a midweek concert and I cannot be around on the only weekend they will be here! The only way I could make a session in Portsmouth with them will be if they are still in the US on the 15th of June or if they get in to Portsmouth on the 1st of June. Bill, Ian, and Sam, where are you flying in to? Boston? New York? What day? |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Susan of DT Date: 07 Apr 01 - 10:36 AM We need dates! Mystic is the June 7 weekend; Old Songs the weekend of the 22. |

Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: bill\sables Date: 07 Apr 01 - 08:55 PM If need be we can fly into Boston on the 31st May so as to be there for June 1st. I am playing in Belgium till the 30th May and Sam and Ian are playing Beverley on June 15th so we must leave on June 14th Bill |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: roopoo Date: 08 Apr 01 - 02:26 AM Dammit, you three, you'll be away for my silver wedding party on 3rd June! Anyhow, I've got a few days in Belgium with Bill (and a lot of other people) the week before the tour. Seeing as how we don't get back until 30th May, I think Bill is going to be exhausted! I don't know how he does it! Andrea |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Amergin Date: 08 Apr 01 - 02:28 AM Silver wedding party? boy, you really are mouldy.... |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Naemanson Date: 08 Apr 01 - 07:15 AM OK, I think we can do this. If you flew into Boston on Thursday the 30th you could do the Portsmouth (New Hamster) session on Friday, a house concert in Freeport (Maine) on Saturday and the rest of your tour from there. The only problem I foresee is jet lag. Now, we need to arrange accomodations. C'mon guys, let's get together on this. I have a futon and two foam pads so I could give them sleeping room but it wouldn't be as comfortable as real beds. Who has room for them? Bill, do you mind if you get slit up between houses? I don't expect you would but we can keep your costs down if we can keep you out of motels and such. |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Cobble Date: 08 Apr 01 - 08:01 AM Naemanson - Don't slit 'em up too much we need them back over hear !!! *BG* Mrs. C |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Naemanson Date: 08 Apr 01 - 08:04 AM Oops! sPlit! |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: bill\sables Date: 08 Apr 01 - 09:14 AM I don't get jet lag crossing East to West but West to East is a problem so that should be OK The 31st is a thursday on my calandar but we could be there that night in Boston, (are there any good sessions in Boston on thursday nights?)Friday should be OK for Portsmouth and Saturday OK in Maine (I've never been to Maine but heard a lot about it) If Animetera can get Nelson for the Sunday that would be great then we could head South. Mrs Cobble , Don't correct Bret's spelling when you spell here hear. And I always thought it was New Hampshire not New Hamster Bill |
Subject: RE: Sables,Pirt &Stephenson in US From: Naemanson Date: 08 Apr 01 - 09:41 AM We once had a performer at the Chocolate Church that used that term. He was up from NH but originally from California. As he described it he was sitting in his home on the West Coast contemplating the death of his beloved pet. He mused, "Now I need a new hamster." Next thing he knew, there he was in a new state. I've called it New Hamster ever since. He was also the one who asked what was worshipped in the Chocolate Church. He thought it might be the God Iva. |
