Been trying to locate lyrics and chords for this song for quite a while. Haven't located it in any of the usual places. As far as I know it was written by Marty Bloom and was recorded by Louis Armstrong and Johnny Dodds in the 20's. The sites I've tried keep referring to My Melancholy Blues by Freddie Mercury which ain't the same thing. All contributions appreciated............Thanks

"Melancholy Blues"
by Marty Bloom and Walter Melrose
Copyright 1927 by Melrose Music Corp.

VERSE:
Way down in my heart deep, the blues just make me weep
Ev'-ry eve-nin', when the sun goes down
Friends that I used to know don't e-ven say hell-o
By my win-dow, they leave me weep-in'

CHORUS 1:
I'm so mel-an-chol-y, I'm just as blue and lone-some as can be
How can I be jol-ly, when no-bod-y cares 'bout me?
Just like the flow-ers need the sun, and crave the dew when day is done
I need some-one to tell my trou-bles to
But it just seems, that no one wants me
That's why I've got the Mel-an-chol-y Blues

CHORUS 2:
I'm so mel-an-chol-y, I'm just as blue and lone-some as can be
How can I be jol-ly, when no-bod-y cares 'bout me?
I wake up at the dawn of day and grab the pil-low where I lay
and pray I'll find some-one to love me true
But it just seems, that no one wants me
That's why I've got the Mel-an-chol-y - Blues

Re CHORDS request in new thread, 2011.
(My partner used to do a lovely version, but with piano).

Cheers, R-J

Thanks, rich-joy, but I think we ought to have another copy without all those hyphens, so that it can be more easily found with a search engine. (People searching for "I'm so melancholy" won't find it if it's spelled "I'm so mel-an-chol-y".)

MELANCHOLY BLUES
by Marty Bloom and Walter Melrose
Copyright 1927 by Melrose Music Corp.

VERSE:
Way down in my heart deep,
the blues just make me weep
Ev'ry evenin', when the sun goes down
Friends that I used to know
don't even say hello
By my window, they leave me weepin'

CHORUS 1:
I'm so melancholy,
I'm just as blue and lonesome as can be
How can I be jolly,
when nobody cares 'bout me?
Just like the flowers need the sun,
and crave the dew when day is done
I need someone to tell my troubles to
But it just seems, that no one wants me
That's why I've got the Melancholy Blues

CHORUS 2:
I'm so melancholy,
I'm just as blue and lonesome as can be
How can I be jolly,
when nobody cares 'bout me?
I wake up at the dawn of day
and grab the pillow where I lay
and pray I'll find someone to love me true
But it just seems, that no one wants me
That's why I've got the Melancholy Blues

[p.s. I have listened to several recordings of Louis Armstrong playing MELANCHOLY BLUES, and all the versions I found were instrumentals. I don't know where the lyrics originated.]

Folks,
if interested, the is a very nice vocal version of Melancholy by Mike Craver singing and playing piano - recorded by The Red Clay Ramblers. The album was called Merchants Lunch, I believe there is a CD available containing songs of that particular album plus another one from the old Ramblers times.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/merchants-lunch/id2564459
Plus a live youtube version derived from Mike's.

I will post the chords here in a few days.

Are you aware that Louis Armstrong's 1927 recording of this song is on the Voyager Golden Record which was launched by NASA in 1977 to bring some of our greatest culture to the stars and possible alien civilizations.

Louis' version does not have a vocal. However, I will post the lyrics with the chords.

If there is anyone in the northern suburbs of New York City who plays this kind of music, I would like to meet and play. I play guitar and sing, and have a large repertory of early jazz. Sorry, not interested in playing post-1930 jazz.

I have the chords written out in Word, but copying them into the line wrap here is defeating me. It throws everything off. I don't have time to rewrite them here. Anyone who wants them can send an email to me at chaszigmund at gmail and I'll be glad to reply with the attachment in Word. No problem, as they say.
