I remember listening to Linda Ronstadt's recording of Heart Like a Wheel and having to take the record off the player. Another song from that time that I couldn't listen to was Bernie Ledden's Lying Eyes. I still can't listen to the long version of it.

Huh! A "love gone wrong" thread and no mention of the mistress of that genre, June Tabor. Any of her CDs would do, but I suppose if I had to choose one track it would be Bob Franke's "Hard Love" - because that seems to fit the original description, where it strikes me that EVEN THOUGH it didn't turn out "as hoped" both parties have benefited from the experience.

The other one - for the hell of love's ending - it The McGarrigle's "Heart Like a Wheel" (except no recorded version of THAT comes close to the version June used to sing live . . WHY did she never record it??)

There's nothing you can do about a broken heart
but hope that time will mend it
There's nothing you can do about the love thats gone
A love who's time has ended

But time is a healer
count on time
to take dark shadows from your mind
There's nothing you can do about a broken heart
but hope that time will mend it

There's nothing you can do about a sad sad soul
but hope that time will heal it
There's nothing you can do about the hurt inside
but hope that time will steal it

For time is a healer
time is a friend
In time a broken heart will mend....

but until then...

There's nothing you can do about a broken heart
but hope that time will mend it

This was recorded by Waylon Jennings and it's the best I've found on the subject.

I hope that I don't get it wrong anymore, Maybe I've learned this time.
I hope that I get what I'm reaching for, the way that it is in my mind.

Someday I'll get over you, I'll live to see it all through,
But I'll go on living, dreaming my dreams of you.

I won't let it change me, not if I can, I'd rather believe in love.
And give it away as much as I can, to those that I'm fondest of.

Someday, I'll get over you, etc.

NEXT TIME
by Al Stewart

He heard the clatter of her heels in the street
The clock said half-past three
He lay there waiting in the dark to hear
The scraping of the front-door key
He wouldn't say to her
"Don't want to know where you were"
She wouldn't find him there
Next time

She missed the train, she felt the rain upon her face
It seemed to clear her head
She watched him drive into the night
A broken tail-light, a speck of red
She still felt his touch
It didn't seem to mean that much
She wouldn't go back there
Next time

When you were just a kid you loved
To go to movies in the afternoon
And so you left the factory
And got a job in the projection-room
Bette Davis plays
Ran away with the passing days
You'll be a movie-star
Next time

At least 3/4 of the songs Patsy Cline sang are appropriate for one phase or another of the whole process of grieving for love lost.

One of my favorite nanny-nanny-poo-poo phase songs includes the lyric: "...maybe someday, you'll want me to want you when I am strong for somebody else And although you don't want me now, I'll get along somehow and then I won't want you."

At least, Beau, your situation was not "A church, a courtroom and then good-bye!"

BTW, how's it going for you now? Please do check in so we won't worry.

One going through my head is called 'Another hump 'em and dump 'em situation', singer unknown to me, but boy, does it get you where it hurts, especially if you've just been shunted out of an intensly intimate relationship for no other reason than paranoia.

Otherwise - as recorded by Abba - 'The day before you came' puts a slant on things that might have gone astray....

Life goes on, whether you want to live it or not. You are the only one who can decide. But it is always best to stay friends if at all possible....

Don't forget "Brand New Broken Heart"

If my friends should ask for me
here at home is where I'll be
there's no one I care to see
I'm breaking in a brand new broken heart

Now the heartaches have begun
there's a job that must be done
I'll advertize for having fun
I'm breaking in a brand new broken heart

Leave me alone, let me cry, cry, cry
There are tears that must be cried
'till there's no more tears inside

Let me take a count of ten
then I'll bounce right back again.
Just let me be alone 'til then
I'm breaking in a brand new broken heart.

Slow it down some and
have some space

Give me my money back
Give me my money back you bitch
I want my money back
And don't forget
To give me back my black T-Shirt

Wish I hadn't bought you dinner
Right before you dumped me
on your front porch
Give me my money back
Give me my money back you bitch

She dumped you. Why should you worry about making her feel better? It doesn't sound like a case of she done you wrong, just like it wasn't mutual enough. But if she done you wrong, get Linda Ronstadt where she sings "You're no good...baby ou'r no good." Play really loud and sing along. mg

Just checking back in after a few days absence, and I found all of theses wonderful sentiments. It occurs to me, there must be as many ways to feel about this type of situation as there are people who go thru it. I have felt many of these emotions since this whole sh*tty process began. I find myself stuck in a situation where I really want to communiate to her what I am feeling (sadness, anger, a desire to have her back)--anything but to stuff my feelings, which has been a bad habit I acquired--but to do so will make me appear weak, and will send her running for the hills; OR, conversely, I can mask my emotions, at least around her, and act as if I am okay and moving on. This will make her feel better about the situation, and might conceivably have the effect of giving her time to realize how much she misses being in a relationship with me, and thereby preserve the possibility, however unlikely, that we might eventually end up together. The problem with that is that acting that way around her makes me resent her all the more, and makes me LESS inclined to get back together with her--it makes me feel like the love I had for her is eroding. I don't know, maybe that's what I need. Catch 22.

Anyways, thanks all for the good vibes. I guess I will get over this the only way I can; one day at a time.

Life's a bitch, and then she dumps you, eh?

Sinsull;

actually that line from "If He Walked into My Life" is

"And I'll ask myself my whole life long...what went wrong along the way?"

a great song. Other lines:

"And there must have been a milion things that my heart forgot to say...Would I think of one or two, if he walked into my life today?"

Beau, I haven't read every post, so if I'm repeating something, do pardon me.

There are two songs that couldn't be beat when I went through the same thing: for just plain ol' cryin' try
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry by the One And Only Hank Williams. For sheer rage, I used to sing Rocksalt and Nails by Utah Phillips. The unabashed anger and rage in that song really stands out in the verse that says:
If the ladies were blackbirds
If the ladies were thrushes,
I'd lie there for hours
In the chilly, cold marshes.
If the ladies were squirrels
With high bushy tails,
I'd fill up my shotgun
With ROCKSALT AND NAILS.

It is an awful sentiment, I know; but there were days when if it hadn't been for my upbringing and some deeply held philosophical and spiritual values, well....

Subject: Lyr Add: I DREAMED YOU
From: Dave (the ancient mariner)
Date: 06 Apr 01 - 12:30 PM

It's all a big illusion mate, all a dream in the end.
Yours, Aye. Dave

I Dreamed You

The night is cold the air is still the earth lies frozen in the chill
My fingers idly trace your name across the icy windowpane
The stars look down so bright and clear I close my eyes and wish you here
You come to me you always do I dreamed you

All at once the winters done and warm I feel the summers sun
We walked through fields where flowers grow the way we did so long ago
I leave this weary world behind and softly find you in my mind
Cause lying in the morning dew I dreamed you

Chorus
I dreamed your fingers touched my face I feel you locked in my embrace
As once more you are mine

But now the summer sun is growing dim I stand here lonely in the wind
And hear the sounds of spring no more for like so many times before
You drift away and I recall that you were never here at all
For now the interlude is through I only dreamed you.

Chorus

Repeat last verse with ending I only dreamed you three times fading..

Written by Sklerov… as performed by Nana Mouskouri

Look, I'm not here to defend George Jones.....I'm not a big fan, but if he isn't the ultimate honky-tonk singer, than who is? Can you listen to any of those "breakup" songs without getting the image of some poor slob, sitting in the back of a dark and smoky dive, listening to George crank one out............and as the last tearjerker comes to an end, he takes out his .357 and blows his brains out? I mean really??? I don't recommend his stuff unless your sense of humor is still intact.

"Oh The Monkey's Have No Tails in Zamboango"
(arranged and adapted by myself and my children)

Oh the monkey's have no tails in Zamboango,
Oh the monkey's have no tails in Zamboango,
Oh the monkey's have no tails, they were bitten off by whales,
The monkey's have no tails in Zamboango

Oh the hyenas do not laugh in Lubumbashi,
Oh the hyenas do not laugh in Lubumbashi,
Oh the hyenas do not laugh, they're annoyed by the giraffes
The hyenas do not laugh in Lumbumbashi.
PM me if you want more lyrics. Sing it to any damn melody you want. Follow this up with a pint of your favorite (or two) and then sing 'em a chorus of "Howja"

"Oh, howja, howja, howja like to bite my ass?"

From: GUEST,Matt_R
Date: 06 Apr 01 - 10:13 AM

It's out of control
And there's nothing I can do now
Out of control

Spinning softly through the blue now
And look beyond these walls

As the meaning starts to dawn
It's getting to the point
Getting to the point.

I
t's out of control, nothing I can do
Like a fire that keeps on burning
And nobody knows what I'm going through
And the thoughts just keep returning
And all you had to say
Was that you were gonna stay
It's getting to the point
Getting to the point

It's getting to the point
Where nobody can stop it now
It's getting to the point
Of no return
And all that I can do
Is stand and watch it now
Watch it burn, burn, burn
It's getting to the point
Where reasons are forgotten
It's getting to the point
Where no one knows
And all that I can do
Is say I'm sorry
But that's the way it goes...
Getting to the point

Forever
Is a long, long way
Forever
Takes your breath away
I'd like to talk about it, try to understand
It's getting to the point
Getting to the point...

It depends on whether you want to wallow in it or not. Wallowing is good, don't get me wrong. But there are different songs for different phases (Elizabeth K-R, where are you?):
1) Serious wallowing, throw yourself off the bridge wallowing. "Crying" -- Roy Orbison. "You Don't Know Me" Emmylou Harris. "The Man That Got Away", Judy Garland.
2) Moody wallowing. Frank Sinatra albums in the mid 1950s.

3) Come back, I will humiliate myself. Dusty Springfield (who else, what else?) "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". Patsy Cline passim.

4) Snapping out of it, plus wallowing. Nothing beats George Jones: "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Good for a laugh, it is so pathetic.

Peter T.

Subject: Lyr Add: FOR THE GOOD TIMES^^
From: Mark Clark
Date: 06 Apr 01 - 02:16 AM

How about Kris Kristopherson's great song, "For The Good Times."

For The Good Times

Don't look so sad, I know it's over,
But life goes on, and this old world will keep on turning,
Just be glad we had some time to spend together,
There's no need to watch the bridges that we're burning.

Refrain:
Lay your head upon my pillow,
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine,
Hear the whisper of the rain drops falling soft against the window,
And make believe you love me one more time,
For the good times.

I'll get along, you'll find another,
And I'll be here if you should find you ever need me,
No need to think about tomorrow, or forever,
There'll be time enough for sadness when you leave me.

(refrain)

I recomend this with plenty of Maker's Mark on the rocks or straight up but not mixed and no chaser. Now that reminds me of Willie Nelson's "Whisky River."

Hi Beau........Tough times my friend.....Try this one:

**********************************************************

MANY TIMES BEFORE--Patrick Sky

If you look for hidden things, you can find them.
You must open up your heart, not bar the door.
Only love will break the fear you bind your heart in.
Well its happened that way many times before.

And if you go I guess you know just what you're doing.
You know you're the only one who can decide.
And I hope you find just where it is you're going,
And that it can heal the million tears you've cried.

When you wake in the morn and find you're lonely.
And I am on some far and distant shore.
Just remember it was I who loved you only.
It just happened so don't worry anymore.

And there is one more thing I'd like to say dear,
Before you leave and tears they start to pour.
I just hope that you won't hold it all against me,
And say its happened just too many times before.

It's not fatal, it's kinda like seasickness. At first you afraid you are going to die, then you are afraid you wont. But, in time your perspective changes, and, thank God, the pain eases.

..dont ask me for a heart that I cant give you
or to act as though the past had never been
For the vows we make today my dreams would all betray
and then my faded rose might bloom again..

Thanks to you guys for the good thoughts and the song lyrics. I have to remember that this is a a process of grieving. Part of me wants to rage at her for leaving me, another part wants to stay away until we each heal enough to be around each other again, yet another part just wants to run to her and hold her until we both have cried all the tears we have to cry. I am sure that with time this will become easier.

Thanks again

I am sorry to hear what has happened, maybe she'll come back if you give her a little space? My last have-a-good- sob-and-a-pound-bar-of-chocolate moment found me singing what I think was a Paul Williams song, the verse which got to me in particular went:

Gone forever, and all the fools have told me
Try to find a life with someone new
Share a pillow where a dream once took the time to lie?
Having known you, I would never even try

Unashamedly sentimental but cathartic...hope you feel better soon.

BeauDangles, sorry this has happened to you. I am just learning Bill Staines' Phoenix and would imagine it'd be a good one to wail on.

Nice to see you, again, and I hope you'll stay in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Two songs that I'd recommend is Waltzing with tears in my eyes by Cowboy Copas written in the late 1940s and Waltzing with tears in my eyes.I don't know the original artist ,but it came out in 1949 and Bob Wills did it ,but he is not the original artist.I believe one of his band members is the artist.Louie Roy

Hi, Beau! Good to see you again. Here is a song that has been somewhat cathartic for me. I believe it was originally written by a man in similar circumstances.

BTW, I'll be in town next week, give the house a call (I'm in the book or PM me if you've forgotten) and we'll see about getting together, okay?

Hi, Mudcatters...

I have been away from the 'Cat for a while. Mostly just living life and working too hard. One really important part of my life for the past year has been a woman named Christine.

We came together under challenging circumstances. We fell in love. We healed each other of some long-standing wounds. We dared to dream of a life together, dancing, playing music, making babies. She was extraordinary. And I have never known anyone like her. I had never allowed myself to love, or to be loved, so deeply.

But something in her heart changed. I think we got too close for her comfort, and she began to withdraw emotionally. A couple of weeks agao, on the vernal equinox, she lowered the boom. She said she needed for once in her life to not be in a relationship, to be just by herself. Long story short, we ended the relationship, and my heart lies in ruins and ashes. I need songs that can help me mend my shattered heart. Can you help?

BeauD
