Woman Convicted of Hitting Blair

.c The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) - A woman who threw a tomato at Prime Minister Tony Blair to protest British support for sanctions against Iraq was convicted of disorderly conduct on Tuesday.

Lynn Marie Coles, 26, of Eastville, near Bristol, admitted throwing the tomato at Blair in January when he visited City of Bristol College. She denied a charge of intentionally causing alarm or distress.

She was given a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £75 in costs. A stain on the shoulder of Blair's jacket was the only apparent damage from the attack.

Protesters also threw oranges and other fruit, but only the tomato hit the prime minister.

``I don't know what came over me,'' Coles said in court.

She said she grabbed a bag of tomatoes from another protester ``because I thought I was a better shot.''

Prosecutor Sarah Regan said Coles apologized for the attack and admitted it had been ``somewhat misguided.''

But arresting officer Roger Curry said Coles appeared happy to be apprehended.

``She was shouting `Got him with veg, got him with a tomato,''' he said.

Personally I think it's quite salutory for our great and good leaders to get a dose of public opinion via vegetable comment. Please fell free to pen some lyrics.

I can't offer any Golden Cow Chips as these are all held in stock with the Gaelic Goddess. So this one's just for fun.

If I were a politician or government official, and people attempted to express their opinions of my official acts or positions by throwing vegetables, pie, whatever, I would be very likely to shift my position in the direction that I felt would upset those protesters the most.

Peter.

For those of us who are ehtically concerned about violence against politicians and other vegetables, it's a good thing that someone didn't have a bag of artichokes, or, perish the thought, okras.

Being a woman, I'm surpise she could hit anything with a round hand-held object. Do you suppose that Blair ducked towards her in that typical British "Give the Mum a hand" noblesse oblige.

Now if she had been one of our ghetto madonnas, weighing 250 pounds and bottle fly black, she'd of taken Blair's head off with the whole bag, and then pawed through the mess just to wear his teeth on her neck, while the bystanders stole television sets...

You Brits have class...

How come that the racial slur is noticed but the slur on fat people is ignored? I assume that Don is as lightweight in the mind as he is in the body.

Sorry Bert, being English I have to do some heavy mental arithmetic to know what 250 pounds is in real weight. We use either stones and pounds, or kilos depending on how old we are. Totally agree though, this site should be for fun and information, not back handed insults to anyone. Now how many pounds are there in a stone......

I just saw this thread for the first time. I would like to make a disclaimer about the post from 'GUEST, Carol's friend Don'. Don may wish to make posts that come across as sounding bigoted and/or racist from time to time. That is his perogative. I don't share his sense of humor on this subject, or his view on same.

I am not in a position to edit Don's posts for content, and his use of my name in the headings is beyond my control.

Carol

I also want to say one more thing. I find Don's 4:55 post on this thread to be incredibly offensive.

And I want to say this...

Don, I think that kind of behavior is conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.

What really disturbs me is that nobody has noticed that this foolish and misguided woman called a tomato a veg. A tomato is a fruit.

Yes! Let's reclaim tomatoes and avocados (no one sticks up for avocados) from the wasteland that is vegetables and return them to their rightful place as FRUIT!

Songs: Bananas - "Yes, I have no bananas!" Another slur on fruit!!!

That's because no-one EATS avocados. But you're right, they are fruit. For as even God (well, George Burns anyway) admitted, the pit is too big.

Oh don't go smearing fruit
On Mr. Tony's suit
Just realize he's for the commonweal
Just pop him with a squash:
It's easier to wash
And bananas, they are known to have appeal.

A little list of what some might call vegetables that are something else:

tomatoes = fruit
potatoes = tubers
green peppers = fruit
avocados = fruit
olives = fruit

Can anyone think of any more?

Oh, by the way, rhubarb is neither a vegetable nor a fruit; it's a leaf petiole. And coffee is a berry and thus a fruit, as is pepper (the kind you grind and put on things for flavor).

Congrats 2 LR Mole for producing a song.

As for the fruit, tuber, vegetable debate, I believe they are all secretly trying to take over the planet and should be instantly mashed!
