Us 'Chucks will doing a joint session with Evy Meyer, Mike Agronoff, and Anne Price, entitled "Laugh It Up" at 12:30 on Saturday, and an Old Country song swap (that's old country songs, not songs from the Old Country) at 8:30 that evening.

I will be there, and will be doing stuff, but not performing, which I don't generally do anyway. I believe I'll be coming with Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon, and we'll all be at the Shanty Sing.

Things always happen this way with me: I bring my fiddle, then spend most of the festival carrying it around to singing opportunities.

If you haven't clicked yet, NEFFA is a music & dance festival in Natick, Massachusetts, USA, April 20 - 22.

Saturday 3:15pm The Boston Folk & Traditional Singers Club from Paddy Burke's (listed as Boston Celtic Singers Club), "Songs Celtic & Not". Lineup besides me: Brian Reynolds, Lynn Murphy, Maureen McNally, Michael O'Leary, Gary Martin. Possibly Peg Aloi, Deb Cowan, & Dan Milner (Liam's Brother). Sadly, we'll miss Barry Finn's lively presence, as we have greatly missed him at Paddy Burke's over the past few months. He'll be with us in spirit, & hopefully we'll catch him in person at Mystic in June.

Saturday 9:15pm "Singers Behind the Scenes", a few friends who keep the folk wheels turning, & are talented singers in their own right: - The legendary Peter Johnson put enormous energy into the Boston folk scene, producing concerts, records, & havoc, in the '60's & '70's & maybe 80's. Focusing on family life in recent years, he's just starting to produce concerts & CD's again, & many will be happy to see him performing again... - Gary Martin produces Music By the Bay house concerts in Assonnet, MA, helps out with the New Bedford Summerfest, scouts out talent as far away as Kerrville, TX, bringing many performers to New England for the first time. Gary has a huge, varied reportoire, from Scottish ballads, to contemporary selections, to those wordy, humorous songs where you wonder when he takes a breath... - Mary Lou Philbin travels to Ireland regularly scouting out talent for the Ossian Loft in Louden, NH, & Irish CDs & books to distribute through the Ossian USA store, catalogue, & web site. We see her at alot of festivals - she's usually behind a CD booth & should come out & share her lovely voice with us more... - And yours truly, who works avidly for the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston, which, by the way is celebrating the release of their 40th Anniversary CD at NEFFA. 16 great traditional songs, by some of our better known members, like The Short Sisters, Peter Fishman & Deb O'Hanlon, some of our up & coming members, like 13 year old Cate Levin, & NEFFA regulars like Total Strangers, Suzanne Mrozak, Merle Roessler, Two for the Show, & yours truly doing a humble version of The Nightingale, a wonderful song I learned from Dan Milner's CD...

I need to go to the bones workshop and the one for beginning mountain dulcimer. I would love to get together with other Mudcatters.

Looking forward to seeing people at NEFFA! I don't have the scehdule in front of me but some time Saturday evening am helping with Drew Smith's string, weed and rind jam, then Sunday many of the same people are doing a Carter Family workshop. I remember, frustratedly, at least ONE conflict with Ukelady's schedule-- want to clone myself so I can be three places at once in NEFFA. I had a great time. My own workshop was well-received (IMHO) and I loved seeing Naemanson, Sandy and Caroline, the Woodchucks, Dan Milner, Jeri, Bat Goddess, Deb Cowan (though I missed her workshop-boo hoo)and I'm sure there were others, but I was also having Old Home Day with friends I used to sing with in Boston. I also did a little swing dancing, heard Kim Wallach sing, missed Barry's voice at the chanty sing but knew he was there in spirit.

I met some people I once knew well and haven't seen in years like Margaret MacArthur and Ken Perlman. Then there were a few people that I only meet at events like NEFFA, NOMAD and Getaway like Judy and Dennis Cook, Jeri, Nancy-Jean, KarenK and (oooh!) why did I start naming people because now I have to name everyone!

Anyway I made a mistake in budgeting my time. I didn't get around enough.

Yes, missed Barry. However, I'm happy he's still alive and on the mend. I'll catch up with him soon.

I did go to the festival and what a great time I had. Generally I go to these and wander around wishing I knew some people and too shy to correct that problem. On Saturday I wandered the halls and kept running into people I knew, whether I knew them or not. The first person I met was Tim who works as a shantyman and demonstrator at Mystic. He is also a bones player and we went into the bones workshop. In there I saw Animaterra (just leaving) and she introduced me to a friend of hers who styed for the workshop. Then I left there and wandered down the hall and ran into Jeri, Bat Goddess, and Curmudgeon. They were at the Folk Legacy booth were I saw Sandy Paton and Karen K. Just beyond them was the Camsco booth where I met Dick and Susan. While standing there felt a touch on my elbow and there was a woman who introduced herself as beiong someone from the Press Room sessions. Later I ran into another woman I met at the Press Room.

And it just went on and on. I saw Dan Milner, Joy Bennett, Jakob, John Roberts, Deb Cowan, Lynn Nowell, etc., etc.

The workshops were great, though the shanty workshops tended to be in small rooms and packed with the crowds. The food was good, the merchandise fun, and the whole experience great. I needed it after last week.

I left around 7:30 and got home around 11:30. I was exhausted but didn't regret a thing.

One of the more wonderful things about NEFFA is that it's about ten festivals running at once. Since my interest is primarily old-time music I never got to dance, no not ONCE (sigh) but did get into wonderful jam sessions
with Allan Block, (and Susan Sterngold and Mike Resnick
huge jam Saturday afternoon that at one point included Bennett Hammond and Lorraine Lee Hammond; I was sitting next to Bennett and studying his fingers intensely! bought some CDs from Susan and Dick, said Hi to the Patons, got to hear Triboro's set on Saturday (wonderful!) and sit on the jam led by the Woodchucks (hi!) who very kindly returned the favor by coming to our Carter Family workshop,. which for 4th year in a row was on Sunday morning so we did lots of gospel songs. MUCH singing and playing and a good start to the Festival Season.
at one point in the juge Sat. afternoon jam Lorraine got up and said "I'll be right back" and I quoted the dialog from the movie "Scream" to Bennett "Whenever a pretty girl says "I'll be right back, forget it. She's lunch." Was right, too-- it is impossible to be there without running into friends you haven't seen since last fall, and you never get back to your starting point. Good, though.

I was sitting opposite the wall, next to Bennett -- I was usually playing guitar-- moving deosil from me one comes to three fiddle players(one of whom was named Bill) and the beautiful Pat Palmer on mandolin, and on from there. . .this was about 2-5 PM Saturday afternoon. I had a WONDERFUL time at Neffa as seems to happen every year-- and I am enjoying the tapes I bought from Camsco! (Advt.)

I, too, had a great time at NEFFA. Mostly hung out at Folk-Legacy as I've been doing for more than 30 years. It is a great place to see everyone since everyone who is anyone stops at FL. Got to hear some great music as well, particularly, Dan Milner, David Jones, Kim Wallach and Jim Bean and Steve Sullwold. Jim and Steve's workshop was Deep Blue Sea and was absolutely wonderful.

Animaterra, thanks for the really nice compliment you paid me a few posts back. I always enjoy seeing you. I do regret, however, not being able to make it to your workshop. I was truly disappointed. I also wanted to pick up a cd or 2 by your group but didn't get a chance to do that either. Bring some to OLD SONGS. Bet Sandy would put some out for you.

Actually, Bat Goddess, it wasn't Tyler. I saw her when we all sat together in Dan Milner's workshop on the Irish in New York. The woman I met at Folk Legacy introduced herself as Barbara and was headed for a dance workshop.

Remember the song Dan and Bonnie did about the soldier who fell in love with his colonel's daughter and ended up killing him. for those who don't know the story, the soldier ends up killing his girlfriend's father and she rescues him just before the firing squad is ordered to fire. She marries him and they move to New York. At the end of the song I whispered to Tyler, "So, he gets his come uppance at the end. He goes to hell and takes her with him."

Right, Brett, I saw Barbara there, too -- and I just discovered last night at The Press Room that not only is she an old folkie (figuratively speaking) but spends almost as much time in cemeteries as I do. She was wearing a t-shirt with the Susannah Jayne stone on it, but didn't know anything about it -- where it is, who carved it, etc. I promptly filled her in, showed her the photos I had just gotten back of Mountain View Cemeter (designed by Frederick Law Olmstead) in Oakland, CA and then told her about finding Prof. Child's grave a few years ago. She's psyched -- and will be in its vicinity in about a week and will pay homage. Unfortunately she's going to be away from Portsmouth for 3 months.
