Ulrike Brauneis organized the monthly old-time jam at Nanny O'Brien's. The jam has moved temporarily to her house, but is still an open event. Worth going to, especially if you're a relative beginner. Alan Jabbour usually attends and is very gracious to less-advanced players. You can learn a lot and meet some good people.

At one time, back in the mid-90s, CABOMA had a separate, OT slow jam, as part of its biweekly jam sessions. Which turned out to be not so much slow-paced as OT, which was good because otherwise their jams were overwhelmingly bluegrass. It wasn't that they were specifically unwelcoming if you turned up with an open back banjo, it just wasn't their sort of music. I eventually stopped going because I don't play bluegrass and almost no one at CABOMA played OT. Anyone know if that's changed?

Guest, e--where do you live in the DC area? It can make a world of difference around here, transport-wise, if you are on the MD or VA side of DC.

Check out the Capital Area Bluegrass and Oldtime Music Association. Caboma www.caboma.org. They have jams every other sunday at Lyons Park in Virginia. There are also Jams in Frying Pan Park. I think I read someplace that the DC Bluegrass Union is having their annual Picnic this Saturday too.

Next Friday, 4/13/01, at 8 PM there's an Open Band at Glen Echo Park, where you can meet about thirty of the best trad musicians in the area, playing for one of the larger contra dances in the area. Many of them have their own bands. Fiddlers to know: Steve Hickman, Laura Lengnick, Sharon Hall, Alexander Mitchell, Joe Herrman, Andrea Hoag, Elke Baker, Richie Schuman and ten others I forgot (well you KNEW how banjo players are... too much plucking without a helmet etc.) Commit this list to memory, and eat it if captured.

If you're any good, they know their own, and at some point you might get invited down to the first of four rows of musicians. (After several years, I'm at the second row)

The buses do go to Glen Echo (up MacArthur Blvd, west of Georgetown. At that point, you're on your own. Don't embarass me!

Also listen for the announcments on WAMU 88.5 FM on the afternoon bluegrass show, and odd times for similar shows on Saturdays and Sundays.

There always used to be a fantastic irish sesuin (sp?) at Nanny O'Brien's on Monday nights. Nanny's is up by the 4 P's and across the street from the Uptown Theater. There is a Metro nearby....but Metro stops running around 11:30 or 12ish so watch the time. It maybe well worth the cab fare though.

I've just moved to the DC area, and play fiddle, and would like to find an old time jam. unfortunately i don't have a car so i have to rely on public transportation. anyone have a suggestion for me? thanks!
