How could Amen offend anyone? It's a word to unite people. Christians say it, Jews say it, Muslims say it. Three versions of the same religion. (Sibling rivalry can be a right bugger sometimes.)

A joyous Passover to all---and also a Glorious Easter.

In celebration I shall, as I do each year, start my program (TRADITIONS) with a celebration of the confluence of these two holidays that usher in the re-birth of the world and spring.
Have eggs at the ready---for Easter and for the final days of your Seders.   The symbolism is wonderful

Some of the musical selections may surprise you.

This is the time for Jews to rededicate themselves to that which is best in our heritage, love of family and an unending regard for those who are, yet, enslaved. Our security can never be attained without a sense of justice and rightiousness.

EBarnacle here, just so that you can drool, here's our menu from the first night:

Charoses: Walnuts, apples, almonds, cashews, red wine and a little   Maneschevitz.
Maror: Ground horseradish done on a hand grater, Balsamic vinegar or white vinegar depending on how fiery you want it.
Gefilte fish: Went out and bought a wild gefilte from Rokeach.
Lamb shank
Hard Boiled egg.
Celery greens
Tzimmis: Cooked down carrots, prunes, peaches, mango with honey and spices.
Green salad with snow peas, sprouts, etc.
Turkey, slow cooked. filled with oranges but no other spices or herbs.
Stuffing made of matzoh, celery, eggs, onions, mushrooms.
Shmurah Matzohs.

I was fortunate enough to spend Pesach with an Egyptian Sephardic family one year in Jerusalem. I didn't understand a word said that night, but the good feelings were palpable. It is here on this thread as well. Good yontov to all, and peace to our world..xx..e

We light the Paschal candle in our church; we say that Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; we talk of the Paschal Lamb, the Paschal Feast.... the Episcopal Church has not forgotten.

Thanks all for echoing and strengthening this message. Last night I participated in a community seder that was held in an open-air pavilion right on the ocean, with about 75 participants, some from the local area and others from San Francisco and Massachusetts and Alaska and elsewhere. It was a magical setting and a joyous gathering. There was a klezmer band providing entertainment, and I got to join in a spontaneous three-part rendition of the hymn Adir Hu. And when we rose to welcome Elijah, we didn't have to open the door: there weren't any doors!

May all of us continue to share in the joy and renewal of this season.

Last year at this time I was wishing I had saved a lovely Haggadah done by a young friend years and years ago. Yesterday afternoon, it came to light as I was cleaning up files packed away in that time... if not for our fire, and the need to check through the old papers to see what was still salvageable from workshops and consulting work I had done, I might never have found it. Timing is sure interesting, eh? [Twilight Zone music fades in and out]

And shall I post the Haggadah? I was thinking of word-processing it anyhow, since I have just the one poorly-xeroxed copy. It was written to reflect the particular understandings of a young Jewish man I knew in the late 80's who was deeply engaged in what was, at that time, a frontier approach to diversity work that stretched all the way to the Arab-Istraeli conflict. So it is, how shall I say, slightly "alternative." And thus, I think, perfectly reflective of the folk process and this place we call... The Mudcat. (Twilght Zone music fades in and out, slightly affected by what we call... The Folk Process.)

And yesterday morning, as I was sorting AGAIN through the boxes of audio tapes to finish the assembly of the Gospel Tape Library, a cassette I had never unwrapped or noticed came into view, of Family Seder Songs. It may have been one the kids had before moving out, or it may have been given to Hardi sometime... these sorts of things seem to have ways of coming into our possession most oddly!

The songs seem to be in Hebrew and Yiddish, although each is introduced with an extremely brief explanation in English... so I can't post them, but if someone would like to transcribe them, I'll send it to you.

With some of the current forum negativity inviting our attention, perhaps this will turn out to be a thread that sets a good example of friendly celebration in the face of ugliness. It sure has begun that way.

I think it's too late to pull a Seder together for the Mudcat for this year, but maybe next year we could have a thread that acts as a Seder... like a running commentary on the Haggadah and memories of past Seders, what the parts mean, other pieces of the tradition that may be in people's hearts... "Next year, at Mudcat." Or maybe next year we will plan our spring Gathering to include Seder. Just a thought.

Susan, no problem. We say "amen" too. We just pronounce the "A" as in "father" and the "e" as in "hey" during services, and regardless, any expression of support to those thoughts are appropriate, in 'ol chanteyranger's book.

Since for some of you it's already the evening of the 7th, which is the first night of Passover (or Pesach), I'd like to offer a wish and a blessing for joy and peace and freedom at this season of rebirth. As Jews throughout the world celebrate this oldest festival of our calendar, and remember when we were delivered from slavery, may all who are oppressed, from without or from within, find the hope and strength to continue their search for freedom. And may those of us who do enjoy freedom reach out with our hands or our hearts to help in some small way with the process of Tikkun Olam -- repairing the world.
